Oh yeah, for an additional $10 a year I got my own domain name and have it parked to my smugmug account. This makes it a lot easier when giving friends and family my photo gallery. They just type in www.kylegendron.com and poof.... it goes right to my smugmug account. I haven't played around with the different front pages. I'm just using the basic one. I know others have made some real night front pages. There are a bunch of regulars here that also use smugmug. I've also had prints made right from the site, as have many friends and family member. Some say zenfolio is better because they use mpix, but I've had no issues thus far. Everythings been great.

If I may ask, where do you have your domain registered? I have mnmstudios at register dot com and they want a ton of money to forward it to smugmug without any ads. What am I doing wrong? how do I get that done for $10? Heheheheheee

Go to your control panel in Smugmug. Then Settings. There should be a spot right in the middle that says Domain. Click on Change. It then brings you to a page to add the domain name. If you don't have one they can direct you to godaddy.com through the help page.

When I first started looking I could have gotten mine for $5.95 the first year, but I waited to long and had to pay 9.95. Right now (as I type) they are having a sale. Basic .com's are 7.49 a year. I don't recall right now how long the initial contract is for. I think I did mine for 2 years.

They have a deal with godaddy.com for smugmug account holders and because of this the "parking" is free.

What "legitimate" things would you be doing? Viewing the EXIF data? That is readily available on the smugmug site by moving your mouse over the larger image. Even then the owner of that account has the option of having that information displayed. If your browsing though someone's gallery on smugmug, what "legitimate" thing would you need to be doing by right clicking on the image other than wanting to "save file" to your own computer? And at least there are hurdles. Flickr has NO hurdles.

Well, as you say, viewing full EXIF is one thing.

Another thing I do is copy pictures where I like the style of the picture, in the hope that I'll remember those ideas when the time comes for me to take pictures. So Print-Screen is going to work just fine for that. Of course, you might not consider that legitimate, but you can't stop it.

I did have a quick look at SmugMug, and true enough it uses some pretty complex JavaScript to hide what it was doing. So it might stop me from grabbing the picture.

But it wouldn't stop anyone who was serious about trying to steal the picture - that's my point. I could use a script debugger and find out the URL of the photograph; I could install a proxy server and catch the request that way...

You said that you wanted the right-click protection to prevent people stealing your picture and using it commercially. SmugMug doesn't prevent that. But it does make it hard to do (what I consider to be) legitimate things with images I see on line.

Bottom line is that if you put a picture on line anywhere, there is a chance that it will be used by someone else.

Alan, your right. However, the way I look at it is like this. Flickr allows you to lock only the doors on your house. Smugmum allows you to lock your doors & windows, along with putting in a burgler alarm, making your house unlisted and even making your house invisible if that is what you want.

Smugmug cares about its customers privacy and security. Flickr could care less.

Check out these links from the creaters/owners of smugmug:

http://dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=83916

I have galleries in my smugmug that you CAN NOT find. They are unlisted, don't show up in any search, don't show up on my gallery page that is public and it is password protected.

In the end, is it really going to be that important for someone to go through all the trouble of creating a script debugger or installing a proxy server to get an image. Or would you rather just go to another site that doesn't have any security.

Kind of like a theif that goes into a neighborhood. Tries the doors and windows on one house, they're locked, so he moves on to the next house till he finds one that doesn't lock their door or windows.

so basically you consider copyright infringement a legitimate thing ??

that's like saying people using locks on their houses make it difficult for burglars to do what they consider legitimate, taking other peoples property..

:confused3 :confused3

wouldn't it be a lot easier to just bookmark the photo, if the only reason you want it, is to copy the concept..

I'm a Zenfolio user,

I chose Zenfolio over smugmug for 2 reasons

1. they use mpix as their lab, I've used mpix for years so being able to continue with them was a big factor

2. Zenfolios Premium account is 100 a year compared to smugmugs 149 a year for their pro account,
better yet I was able to lock in at 80 a year last december when they rean a special

if you or anyone else would like to try Zenfolio, you can use this discount code to save 5 dollars off your first year

one other thought on Zenfolio any time I've had a question for customer support, I've received a reply within 30-60 minutes.

I think I've also heard members on here comment that smugmug's customer service is just as quick to reply

IANAL, but...

Kyle's point about making things trickier for the person who wants to steal images is fair enough, as is the analogy with locks, keys and burglar alarms, but I think that this line stretches it beyond breaking point.

By placing (their own) photograph on a public web site, the photographer is automatically expecting that people will view that photograph on their own computer. By copying the picture that is displayed on my property (my monitor) and saving it onto my hard disk, then viewing it at another time on my own computer, I do not see how that can be construed as breaching copyright.

Many professional photographers keep a file of photographs from magazines and such, that they can use when looking for inspiration. That sounds conceptually the same as the electronic equivalent described above, but I have never heard it described as breach of copyright.

Selling the pictures on is of course a breach of copyright in either case.

wouldn't it be a lot easier to just bookmark the photo, if the only reason you want it, is to copy the concept..

And to look at and enjoy the picture. But no, bookmarking is no use if the original goes away, or the address changes, or my internet link is down...

Looks like the S3 served you well. The pics have nice contrast to them, on the first page of pics on your Flickr page.
Are you in the pictures or are you always behind the lens? I take a ton of pictures (70,000+ since I got into photography and I might literally be in 10 at the very most).

How do I post photo from flickr on DIS?
Is there an link to post photos from Flickr?
under the share icon I see the html and direct link but no [img] like I have on photo bucket.

under your picture where it says:

"2. Grab the photo's URL"

copy that link then paste it into the window that pops up when you click on the "insert image" tool above the typing area here where you type your post then click "OK". When you first open the insert image window it will say:"http://" I highlight that and delete before you enter your link.

Here ya go! If this is the image you wanted, let me know and I'll tell you what I did. :goodvibes

All I did was go to that photo in your Flikr---right click the image, go to "Properties" and you will see something that says "address (URL)" or something similar. Copy that bit and then just simply paste it between

I never use the "insert image" button or whatever, just because it seems like more hassle than it's worth. Whenever you want to post an image, just copy the code, type in
and paste it in the middle and it should work.
