"What Not to Say"

Making ADR's so one can stay in a park during MNSSHP (so one can try to stay at the party w/o paying)

Why have I never thought to do that!! :lmao: Just kidding!

Here's mine:

Don't ask "whether or not you should make your screaming kid get onto a ride"?

One that hasn't been mentioned yet is about getting kids onto rides who are a fraction of an inch too short for the height requirement.

The old urban legand regarding the parents who tried to get their kid on a ride by sticking ice cream bars in the kids' shoes. Mmmmm...Mickey bars...:mickeybar:mickeybar:mickeybar

How about replacing some of the classic (read:lame) rides in MK?

Conversely, anything about the Stictch attraction will bring out those who strongly dislike the ride and the character. I don't know that the threads get nasty, but some folks REALLY dislike the Stitch attraction.

shelleymouse2: I'm not sure why you can't post to the fairy godmother thread if you are able to post here. Some threads are only open to the moderators, but that one should be fine. One quick way to find the rules is to look at any thread, then scroll down to the very bottom of the screen, one the left is a box listing things you are able to do, and at teh bottom is a link to the forum rules.

Well, I try to be sympathetic to all newbies. Please take this list a bit tongue-in-cheek. Generally, we aren't flaming you - just the topic - and it may have little to do with your actual question than the history of prior threads.

I would say in general, don't take offense if your thread topic hits a nerve with some folks.

Likewise, don't feel bad if your thread doesn't generate many takers. Sometimes it's best if your thread doesn't go viral.

MOST important if you see this guy popcorn:: it doesn't mean we dislike you - it's just a shorthand way of saying you've touched on a sensative topic here on the DIS.

Other topics that are likely to generate heated debates:
letting kids hang out alone at WDW, :rolleyes1
wheelies,
coolers with wheels in the parks,
suggesting that there might be a financial class differences between different folks at WDW, or for that matter anywhere in America, but espcially at the various Disney resort levels (value/mods/deluxes)
free dining (but still feel free to ask anyhow)
love bugs
Brazilian tour groups
taking photos that might include someone else's child
anything relating to child predators
flash photos and using cell phones on rides
making multiple ADR's or any ADR's that you don't plan to attend
having to make ADR's at 180 days
complaints of WDW staff
towel animals, esp if you expected them
to tip housekeeping or not, and HOW much to tip them
how much to tip at table service dining, but especially how much ot tip at BUFFETS (Disney makes a suggestion on the bottom of your bill)
Putting more than the listed number of guests in a room
Cooking in your room - esp crock pots going in an unattended room
ooh - one more on strollers/scooters - using them as battering rams vs. being able to stop them for folks who step right in front of one.

Remember also that religion and politics are not allowed onthe DIS. I'm gathering because those topics got too heated, and are not really about WDW.
That about sums it up. But, I've always wondered why people get upset about free dining. What are the two arguments?

A recent one from the DL boards - buying discounted park tickets at a convention's website, when you are not attending (or eligible for) said convention.

I don't know if it's a "2 issues" kind of thing, just that whenever free dining comes up, some sort of argument ensues like...

People always ask if it is busier in the parks during free dining time
Complaints that ADR's are harder to get during free dining
Complaints that there are more poorly dressed (read: "lower class") people and/or children at TS and signature restaurants during free dining
Which deal is better, 7 for 4, free dining or 35% off usually leads to a long convo
Also issues on kids ages/ordering from the kids menu/appetizer vs desserts/tipping

They go on and on

Wow, that's a new one to me! Never thought about bring the old crock pot :)

I love this thread, I've read lots of threads lately but haven't posted until now. Trying to get the hang of things! It is amazing how much heated debate occurs on this board!

So here's my contribution to what not to say, not seen much argument about it but definitely strong opinion on both sides: "how crowded is Jersey week really?"

I don't know if it's a "2 issues" kind of thing, just that whenever free dining comes up, some sort of argument ensues quickly thereafter lol. Some of the issues I've seen regarding free dining are....

Complaints that ADR's are harder to get during free dining
Complaints that there are more poorly dressed (read: "lower class") people and/or children at TS and signature restaurants during free dining

Wow. I seem to have missed all of those. We're doing free dining when we go on Friday. Now I'm nervous about mentioning it in my TR. Wouldn't want to start a debate now.;)

Nah don't be nervous, everyone is well intentioned :) I think a lot of it is the same questions getting asked a lot. Some people just get irritated by it.

Regarding free dining as a hot topic: the 'hot' part comes when folks debate if it 'really' is 'free dining.' Obviously, you have to buya package - not free - to get this discount. The folks who dislike this discount usually compare it to the room rate discounts that are *typically* offered at the same time. (free dining is typically offeed August/September) Compared to the room rate discount, free dining is LESS of a discount off RACK RATES at the deluxe resorts (and falls in between at the mods). The size of the free dining discount depends onthe make up of your party. It's about $40 per day per adult. If you've only got one adult, then it's only $40 off your room - not a big deal. If you've got two adults and two juniors (kids 10 - 17), then it's $160/day!

Our family of four: two adults, two teens:

BC with water view, Nov 8 for six nights, DDP, 7day MYW tickets with hopping and waterparks
rack rate: $5,500.

Same thing no dining: $4,540 ($960 difference)

SAme options and resort but with free dining offer $4540

Same options, including DDP, but using current room discount offer: $4751 ($124/day)

same options as above, room discount, no dining, and getting tickets via Disney (you could save a little buying tickets froma broker):$3791

Same family, dates at ASSp standard room:

rack: $3073 (with DDP), $ 2833(with QS DDP)
rack no dining: $2113
free dining offer:$2353 (DDP), $2113 (QS DDP - free)*
same otions w/room discount:$2863 (reg DDP) $2623 (QS DDP)
same options, room discount, no DDP: $1903

*the discount you get is equal in value to the QS DDP at a value, you are paying the difference in price between the two plans.

So the current room only discount for BC, in this case would be $750.
Using Free dining :$960 - the cost of free dining. (Often these numbers are reversed, and the room only discount is bigger)

At the values, the current free dining off is for the price of QS DDP (the aug/sept offer was for th regular DDP, so a bigger discount).
So the difference is $720, using free dining offer.
The current room only discount is $210 at a value.

One more bit to chew on - when you pick different offers, the default add ons change as well. We have to be careful to compare EXACTLY the same packages components to each other. Disney also famously adds on travel insurance to some packages, but not others. I forgot to look for that! When you call by phone, they tend to tack it on automatically.

Anyhow, lots of folks who complain about the freeness of free dining don't look at the details. They often compare a free dining package against one with no dining plan. The $1903 offer against the $2353 offer. They maybe offer something like, "I can feed my family of four for 6 days at WDW for $450." But you really can't. That's only $75 per day.

$75 = 4 breakfast platters at ASSp (no drinks), four double burgers at Pecos Bills (also no drinks). That leaves about $15 for dinner/snacks. You'd have to split two counter service meals among four people to make that work, or get your teenagers kid's meals.

The scooter thing is a pretty big one though, especially when someone says something like "The able bodied people took all the scooters." That will start a riot lol. QUOTE]

We went down in July and it was the first time my father needed a scooter for health reasons. Last November we went down and we were walking into EPCOT and there was a family of 19.. I am NOT joking... from young young kids.. early teens to older adults all on the scooters. We were waiting for my father to come off the boat and walk up the hill, when we noticed all these people. Well one of there family members looked at me and was laughing so hard.. she says " The funny thing is ... only one of them needed it.. but they all wanted to do it". Well.... I just couldnt let it go.... here my father who.. has multiple back and hip issues is huffing it up the hill and all of your 19 family members are having a blast on the scooters! I never question people who are on the scooter... because I have learned from this board that you just never know what the other person is dealing it... but when I witnessed that I freaked out :scared1::scared1:. Thats my two cents! popcorn::

Also im not sure if this was covered..but when people ask if they can share tickets!

This was just an issue, so I don't want to bring it up a gain, but it has to do with Room cleaning. Also another one is which rooms are closest to food courts. Why can't I get what I requested. :confused3

There have been various threads about mousekeeping standards. Surprisingly some folks will come on here and share a bad experience they had and others will sometimes deny that they might have had a problem with an unclean room.

One more topic that well, doesn't get heated so much but grosses folks out - bugs! Although, come to think of it, several animal/wildlife threads have turned sour. Some folks are more animal rights advocates (various interpretations) and some are more human-needs-first kind of folks. I'd still ask, but just be prepared that it could turn sour, esp if it invloves the icky/ugly kind of wildlife.

Another issue that always brings on a heated debate.....

How old is too old for a young boy to go into the ladies room? Also just who can use the companion restrooms?

Taking your child on Ellen's Universe of Energy b/c it talks about the big bang theory. Heaven forbid your child is introduced to more than one theory or idea on creation (not debating yay or nay on either, or threads voicing personal opinion/belief...but the one's that say everyone should steer clear of this ride b/c it is *wrong* and y'all will go to h e double hockey sticks for even partaking so watch out!)

Simarlarly, about F! promoting sorcery and the dark arts.

Actually I guess any religious opinion in general is going to ruffle feathers depending on what you believe.

New here and just want to thank you for the heads up. I've been on numerous message boards and still frequent a few so I know how some innocent comment can turn into a major arguement. Glad I can avoid that now!:thumbsup2

It does seem as though if a post can be interpreted two ways, one that is offensive and one "innocent" someone will take offense. ;)
It is also amazing how many people see themselves in posts, and instantly get the hair up on the back of their necks -even though the OP doesn't know 'em and couldn't pick 'em out of a line up....that post was a personal insult.

Anyway, have fun....we are basically a good bunch*

*not meant to suggest that any particular person is not "good", only to avoid overgeneralizing and placing anyone in the "good" coumn who chooses to be "bad".......use a directed.....not intended for use as a flotation device....:lmao:

Taking misbehaving kids to signature restaurants and ordering hotdogs
(sorry couldn't resist)
QUOTE]

Oh there are a number of different takes on this one. Just about any thread that comments on parenting styles - or ones that lead to commenting on parenting styles. Lots of threads on WHAT constitutes a misbehaving child.

Along the same lines are threads wishing for more child-free locations in WDW: a restaurant, a resort. (Currently Victoria and Alberts does not allow kids under a certain age. I haven't checked recently, but the Dolphin experimented a 'child free' section in one of its restaurants.)

Y'know, you need a license to drive a car, or operate heavy machinery, but kids don't come with instruction manuals. Maybe they should, or at least some form of educational opportunity for parenting 101.[/QUOTE]

that would seem to qualify......:confused3

I got my hands scorched in that one! It's like a car wreck, but I can't stop myself from looking!

Reusing refillable mugs is a big issue also, I've seen one turn pretty nasty!
