Ok, I might not be ready for the nasty comments but wow, what a terrible sandwich.
I read here about how fantastic it was and had to try it. We didn't have reservations but I had just picked up my son from Miramar where he was discharged so we could drive his stuff home. that story got us in without reservations.
We both ordered the sandwiches and waited for the delicious meal to come.
Our first bites told us we were wrong to trust others. Ham and cheese in a donut covered with sugar with jelly on the side for dipping.
And I know where it got the name "crisco" the grease literally dripped down our arms. I went through 4 napkins just to wipe the grease off one quarter of the sandwich so I could eat it. I wrapped the thing in paper napkins and squished it over and over to soak up the grease.
We each ate 1/4 of the sandwich and we packed them to go. Thought we could heat them in the micro wave in the room and drain more grease off in the room instead of in the restaraunt. Well they were worse the next day. Uggh. We tossed them.
$62 for 1/2 sandwich, and 1 and 1/2 sandwich garbage. the salad I had was good, but the dressing was almost pure vinegar. My son did like the chicken gumbo he had.

Sorry you did not like them. I guess they aren't for everyone. But me, YUM!!

It's actually called a Monte Cristo, but the Crisco mistake is easy to make. I know these are beloved by many but I'm not a fan either. Don't get me wrong, I love all kinds of deep fried things, but this one is just too much for me. :confused3

First, it's Cristo. Not Crisco.

And there are plenty of people that don't care for them. Did you read a description of it before ordering? I guess I'm just puzzled why you would order it if the description of it sounded unappealing.

I've never tried it because it doesn't sound good to me at all. I also don't like the DLR corndogs because of the defcon 5 grease factor. Sacrelige, I know.

That is a lot of cash to drop on two sandwiches. Sorry it didn't work out or you.

I agree with you. It never sounded good to me, and I never ordered it. My son loves it and I had a bite. One bite was enough for me. Last trip I had the gumbo and LOVED it! :thumbsup2 Can't wait to get that again! (with the fries of course! ;) )

Holy rip off batman! Sorry to hear that $62 went down the drain. That's a very high price to pay for this sandwich. I personally love the sandwich. In my neck of the woods, we go to this place called Benningans (sp) and order the sandwich with a Snakebite (half pear cider/half guiness) and it's awesome and it's like $12.

It's def not for everyone but on the flip side, I also know people that just love the sandwich.

And now you know.

Seems like an all around good deal. You got to try something
new. You didn't like it. Now when you read anyone saying how
much they love it you can jump in and tell them how horrible
it is - from actual experience.

BTW - I'm with you. It was my Mom's fav. I had a hard time
sitting at the same table with her. I'd eat 100 of them to have
her back for 20 minutes...

we love the 3 cheese version, but I wouldnt force it on anyone. I read about the love of mint juleps all the time and I hate those. Disneyland has something for everyone!

I like them, but they are terribly rich. My DD6 and I had eaten my sister's monte cristo leftovers from BB when we were at DL in May (and we both liked it). So, when we went to a place called Cheddars in Lexington, KY while we were on vacation, we got one there for me and DD6 to share (less than $9 - and it included a side), and we still ended up giving about half of it for the rest of the table (there were 11 of us) to try b/c it was just too much. We don't eat the jelly with ours. :)

A word to those thinking of trying it at DL, try it first at a cheaper local restaurant before plunking down $31 (ouch!) for a sandwich that might not be to your taste. And, yes, we like the mint juleps, too!

I agree! After reading so many reviews on this board about how good it was, I thought I have to try it! I was so disappointed. I think it was one of the most disgusting things I've tried. Oh well, I gave it a try and while it may not be for me, I know there are others that love it. Glad to hear that I'm not the only one who didn't like it!

Those sandwiches just do not sound good. However, I am pregnant and am having some food aversions and cravings. Even not preggo, I'm not sure I would want to try one.

I was really digging the baked potatoes at the Troubadour Tavern though and they were like $6.75. One night I got the last potato!

Excuse me, but who is this Monte Crisco? Is he a new game show host or something? Or perhaps it is a new product put out by the Crisco Baking Company? TIA ;)

Holy shishkabob! That sandwich is now $31.00 ? Why? How much cheese is in it after all? For that price, I hope half a cows worth of cheese is served. And with cheese on the side.

I have to agree with you on this one, I was excited to try it but took like 2 bites and gave the rest to my husband and daughter. But I have to say everyone else at the table loved it. So I guess you just have to try things once and decide if its for you!:) I ate the whole container of Pomme Frittes though! YUMMMOOO!!! I am craving them now!!

can't you buy this at a fast food location in DL? I was planning to....OP,your description sounds so good.....different strokes I guess:thumbsup2

You can only get the Monte Cristo at Blue Bayou or Cafe Orleans. There is not a counter service option. Although I wish........:cloud9:

Depending on when your are going, I would make reservations at Blue Bayou ahead of time or first thing in the morning....it gets very busy.

Cafe Orleans can be a walk up, just prepare to wait depending on how busy.

DH and I have done "extensive" research on this sandwhich. We have concluded it is the same sandwich at both places. You will pay more at Blue Bayou; which at times is just fine because we love the atmosphere of the resturant. However, sitting on the patio at Cafe Orleans is great.

OP - I don't care for Monte Cristo sandwiches at DL for just this reason. Either they're frying it at wrong temps or using healthier oils that don't fry well (soak into the food too much), but they should not drip and run with grease! I used to eat MC's at Bennigans and had one recently (forgot the restaurant's name) and they weren't like this. They were very rich, but not a squishy grease ball.

Forgot to clarify: I've ordered the Monte Cristo once at DL and it also was a soggy greasy mess. Enough so to turn me off from ordering it at DL ever again. :sad2:
