Are you reluctant to book a cruise?

In light of last week's accident, is anyone now reluctant to book a cruise? On our local news last night, they had the results of a poll asking if people would feel less comfortable on a cruise ship than in the past. One woman said she's cruised before, but there's no way she will do it again anytime soon. She's concerned that the poor leadership and training on the Costa ship is indicative of the whole industry. On the other hand, a man said he wouldn't think twice about the safety of cruising, and would book a cruise without hesitation.

I have taken four previous cruises, and would not hesitate to take another one. In fact, we're thinking about booking a 5-day cruise on Carnival this summer. The accident hasn't changed my mind a bit. Overall, I think cruising is a very safe way to travel. I'll be in more danger on the drive to the pier. I also think that stricter industry standards will begin to emerge regarding safety procedures and drills.

How is everyone else feeling about the safety of cruising? Has the accident caused you to rethink your plans to take a cruise?

Never been on a cruise but this would not deter me. It would, however, deter me from that particular cruise line!

nope, not worried at all. i've been on exactly ONE cruise(RCCL), of course, so i don't know how much weight my opinion will carry. But I am not worried. I think as the days go by and the story continues to unfold we're going to hear a lot about how rules were broken on this ship, perhaps safety systems overridden or turned off, and people who should have been at their posts who weren't. When we were on our little 5-day cruise there were endless drills of one kind or another the whole time. Even in rough seas I felt comfortable that everything was being done as it should. Perhaps if I had a loved one on this particular Costa cruise, I might feel differently

I'll be on the Disney Magic on the 28th. This will be my first cruise and something I have been looking forward to for a long time. I am hoping we enjoy cruising as there are other places I would like to see by ship sometime in the future. (Alaska & Panama Canal primarily.) This incident should not have happened but I do not think it is an industry wide problem.

We cruise about once a year and a co-worker asked me this yesterday.
I told her I am definately not nervous but it does make me want to be more aware when I get on the ship about exits, giving a plan to my older teens, etc.

I said it is like the same thing with an airline crash. People still fly and that happens more than a luxury liner capsizing.

The only thing that bugs me about a cruise is the seasickness!! Now that's scary!!!

haaaaaate cruises...:scared:

Heck no. A relative worked on cruise ships for almost a decade and even she still wouldn't hesitate to hop back on a ship after this event, which is a crew members worst nightmare. Ships are safe, human error is not, and whatever caused this tragedy will be figured out and measures will be put in place to be sure it doesn't happen again.

ITA! We're booked on the Dream for this November and DH and I haven't thought about canceling at all. It was an accident, granted of major proportions but still an accident. Once they figure out exactly what happened you'll see changes to the industry to make sure that this doesn't happen again.

We've taken several cruises, on Disney, Royal Caribbean and Carnival. Our next one will be the 26th of this month, the Carnival Freedom. And we have the Carnival Conquest planned for January 2013 too.

We can't, or rather won't, live our lives in fear of what ifs.

I have a cruise booked for May and not canceling. There are so many things that can happen in life so I'm not gonna stop living. It was an accident. Accidents happen and even more so in cars on a daily basis. That is more of a risk than a cruise ship.

Well, statiscially speaking, the most dangerous portions of my June cruise are, in order:
1) The drive to the airport
2) The bus ride to the port from the airport
3) The flight to the port
4) The cruise.

So no, not concerned, but may pay a little extra attention at the Muster drill.

No. My family went on the Crown the week after it listed. It never crossed my mind to outright cancel. Granted, we thought about it, there were reminders everywhere, but it did not dampen our time.

I am searching right now for a cruise.

One thing it did do was have a more precise plan for my family. We always did have a plan on where to meet for emergencies, etc, etc, especially as they are now teens and have more freedom. Now we have altered this a bit, and made different arrangements. This may do that (hopefully) for a lot of families.

Cruises have always scared me, not the fact of the recent events but of those that go overboard and are not discovered until the boat are in port...

I've been on two cruises and they're not my thing. It turns out I don't like enclosed spaces and I get seasick.

That said, flying scares me much more than cruising, and yet I still fly several times a year. And I can swim much better than I can flap my arms and fly...
