we just got the first 2 days of our April break taken away, possible a third day due to losing so much school between the oct hurricane and Blizzard last weekend.. good think we planned march to hopefully go and not the kids break

Not yet and it better not happen! My DH is a teacher and I would seriously freak if he was told he couldn't travel during April vacation!

That's really odd..
That would hurt A LOT of people vacations here too!

they build in 5 snow days at the end of calendar..
How many days did you guys in OCT?

We have built-in days for Snow Days, I think 3... But, that said, in our New England state, if there's a weather event where more then 90% of other schools, or if state offices and services close, the day is "forgiven" and we don't have to make it up.

When I was going to school, losing days and pushing back the last day of school was always a big deal... We wouldn't know when the last day of school was until April. Then in 1999, we got slammed with storm after storm and we missed so much school that there were talks of half days on Saturdays just to make sure they didn't extend school for the underclassmen until July and change the date of graduation for the seniors (as all the invites were all purchased, printed, and distributed). Another horrific storm rolled in, actually the "big ice storm" of that year, and they didn't cancel school in our district because it would have been the drop that overflowed the bucket in our threat of a prolonged school year. We were one of only a handful of schools in New England, much less NH, that didn't cancel. Unfortunately, a car driven by a student went off the road on the way to school due to the bad weather and it resulted in the death of a foreign exchange student and the surviving students were stuck in the car with a dead classmate for several hours. Word got back to the school about it, people freaked out, and they sent us all back home right after lunch, and a bus went off the road stranding a group of elementary kids for hours.

Long story short, the school system was sued to Timbuktu and back for not closing, the state was sued, and laws were changed. Now the state forgives days and schools aren't penalized, therefore the theory is that they won't keep school open when it should be closed.

But now, the last day is the last day and it's put on the calendar in Oct. It's pretty hard and fast and we'd never lose a vacation. As a result of all of that, our state is actually pretty fanatical about making sure that appropriate days are forgiven and nobody is penalized for calling off school on days where it's appropriate.

I am not in New england, but Central PA..We lost 2 Spring break days and Presidents day already because of the hurricane in October .We don't build days into our calendar and for various local reasons , school needs to end No later than June 10th each year.So they pull from Spring break..The one year we lost our whole spring break week

I'm on Long Island and we lost 8 days for Sandy. Most of the schools are in session right now. We always get a full week off for Presidents' Day/week and many many people go away. I feel bad for so many people who had to cancel their trips. My kids are in catholic school so they are still off this week, but not the public schools.

where we live near Atl we lost Good Friday ("ice" we never got)... which I know a bunch of people were supposed to leave Thurs night for vacations. we had Presidents day taken away 2 years ago... I still took the kids out of school.

we dont leave until Easter Sunday for WDW --after a vb tournament.

I am a teacher in Mass - we lost 2 days for Sandy and then another 2 for the blizzard so we're not at our 5 days quite yet (hopefully never!) I would be so angry if they took away April break and my Disney trip! However, we have so many people that travel on school vacation weeks that taking April vacation away would never fly in our district! I can see the parents with their pitchforks now...:rotfl2:

We are in CT. We lost two days for Sandy, two other days to smaller storms, and 5 days for the blizzard. Oh, and one of our schools lost an extra day with Sandy because of roof damage.

As it stands now, our last day is Friday June 28, and we have lost the last two days of our April Vacation (so April 18 & 19 we will be in school). The other school is also making up their extra day on Wed. April 17.

If we have any more snow days ( we usually end up with a big storm the first week if March, so I expect at least one more snow day), then we will lose more days of our April break.

A couple of years ago, when we had two blizzards hit us, our school blew through it's snow days and some. The principle understood that people had made plans months ahead of time and absences were excuse on those make up days.

Here in MA (at a private school), they tack it on to the end of the school year rather than taking breaks away. We are already going 5 days later than we originally were. THankfully, I don't book vacations until July for just this reason.

Also on LI. In school the rest of this week because of Sandy and we've lost the first Monday of Spring break (which is the week before Easter).

When was/is Spring break in New England? I thought many of them were early this year because Easter is early.

We are on LI too. We lost 8 days for Sandy and 1 for the blizzard.

They are in school all this week, including pres day, to make up 5 of them.

3 snow days were built into the calendar.

Haven't heard how they will make up for the 1 blizzard day yet.

The only time they have off is Spring Break and Memorial Day.

Our Spring vacation is the week of April 15th to coincide with Patriot's Day in Massachusetts. Most years it makes a great week to take a vacation because it is usually well after the rest of the country has taken their vacation. Only if there is a late Easter (like next year) that this can be problematic.

Ours in the week of April 15th as well and no, we have not lost any days. We got lucky and did not lose any for Sandy. We were out two for the Blizzard. Hopefully that will be it!
As a teacher, I would be telling my district "Sorry but I am not going to be in!" and going anyway.

This.:thumbsup2 As PP mentioned, in MA, our Spring Break coincides with Patriot's Day not Easter.

Would there be any repercussions of doing this? If I told my employer that I was going on vacation when it was not approved; I would be terminated.

Just curious.

Hopefully I won't have to do it and find out. The problem is that my vacation is in the school calendar. If they change that calendar after I have made my vacation plans are they allowed to cost me those plans? It would be a huge financial hit for us.
It would be as if your vacation was approved by your boss and then after you planned and paid of it, your boss came back and said "Actually you can't go that week after all"

Same here. I'd be fired too. Most employers wouldn't tolerate that...
