Purple hair dye for tween - any recommendations?

My daughter is turning twelve. She wants to dye the ends of her hair purple. I am thinking of letting her do it over the summer.

I would like to use semi-permanent color. The other consideration is she swims about every day during the summer. Not sure if anything semi-permanent will last with all the chlorine/hair washing.

Any suggestions?

No recommendation on products, but I would absolutely let your daughter dye her hair! What a great way to express individuality without health risks or permanence (e.g. piercings or tattoos).

W hat about that chalk stuff the advertise? IF she doesn't like it no big deal. Or if she wants another color she will be set.

Unless your daughter has very light blonde hair, she will need to first bleach the parts she wants purple. Those bright colors just don't look bright (or show up at all) unless they are going over bleached or very light hair.

Once the tips are bleached (when I did this as a teen, I went to the salon at the mall just to get the bleaching part done because I didn't want to fry my hair) you can apply the purple dye at home. It will fade over a few weeks and you can just reapply it.

I'd use color treated shampoos and conditioners, plus a swim cap for swimming if she's really concerned about it.

If she swims every day you are probably better off going with a more permanent color. You can always cut off the ends when school starts again if you want.

Take her to a salon to get it done evenly so you are happy with the look. You can always look to groupon or living social for discounts.

My salon started carrying these type of bright colors and they look great......

I have a chunk of purple in my hair right now and I love it. It's very me and I know it will go away eventually. ;)

You should absolutely go to a salon and get it done. As other posters said, she'll need to have the tips bleached for the purple to 'take'. Depending on her hair color, it should be a fairly quick. :thumbsup2

Thanks everyone for your info.

My daughter has darker blonde hair and she swims daily so sounds like we should do permanent color.

I will definitely take her to the salon for that.

I agree about letting her dye it. I just didn't want it during school but the summertime is perfect and we can cut it out before school starts.

I grew up in the 80s when having purple and pink hair was original and shocking. These days, it's pretty mainstream.

Since you are just talking about the ends, you could easily do this yourself. If you have a Sally Beauty Supply near you, they sell a kit to do the bleaching and Manic Panic colors, which work really well.

My daughter went for the same look when she was that age and it was very fun for the summer. The next year she decided she wanted teal streaks and that didn't work so well. We used Punky Color and it wouldn't wash out. It faded to a green color and was in her hair until it grew out. Fortunately, the school didn't make a big fuss about it since we were not re-dying it.

Edited to add that another reason you may want to do it yourself is that even with permanent color it may need to be redone more than once over the summer with chlorine exposure.

I used splat from walmart when I dyed my own hair purple last year. It will not stay in well (permanent or not) if you are in a pool everyday. I also dyed my daughters hair turquoise blue at the same time. I bleached my daughters hair, but not mine and both turned out really good. We just did hers with splat dark blue and the color took too well and came out almost black - she likes it though.

DD15 has some. Uck!!!! What a mess it makes, it doesn't last, and you would need a butt load of it to really get all the tips of your hair done and have the color stand out.

The salon is where DD got her purple done. Striped her hair and my hairdresser colored it up for her.

I grew up in the 80's too... came home one day with the side of my head shaved like a crew cut and a lightning bolt shaved in... my mother said.... "did you mean to have that done"... I said "yes"... she said ok, that's all that matters. :)

My daughters has purple streaks quite often. My wife purchases the dye manic panic at a beauty supply store. Some of the purples look blue when applied.

I was going to say the same thing. My kids used kool-aid. Sure is cheap.

DD#2 used fruit punch kool aid last summer to dye the bottom of her hair red. She has dark blonde hair and did not bleach it first.

It stayed in for at least 5 months (although it did fade) until she had it cut off when she decided to hombre her hair.

Imagine what kool aid does to your stomach???? :scared1:

Last summer my DD used SPLAT blue dye in her hair, and as soon as she went swimming in a chlorinated pool it faded a lot and turned purple. correction: she dyed it purple and it turned pink (she just saw this and corrected me)
That said, my DD now uses Manic Panic brand dye, we buy it at Sally Beauty Supply. We bleach her hair prior to using the dye, but I think if you want a more subtle color you don't have to. It usually last about 5-6 weeks.
