Central AC Temp?

Totally nothing to do with anything, but what do you keep your central A/C set to in the summer?

We're in New England and it's been very, very hot and humid for the past several days. We did get central air a few years ago, but honestly don't use it all that much. We'd rather have open windows and fresh air whenever possible. But there's a few weeks each summer when I LOVE having the central air!

But there seems to be an ongoing battle in my house about what to set the temp to. Hubby turns it up, I turn it down, up, down, up, down. :dance3:

So what do you guys keep yours at? And does it change during the day and night. In the winter, we have heat at about 67/68 during the day and then down to 63/64 at night.

We have the same battle here...for heat and a/c! I like it at 72 year round. DW likes 67/68 year round (and a little colder at night). We fluctuate...no one really wins. Sometime we compromise at 70 ;)

I don't like having the air on either but we haven't been able to avoid it the last few weeks. It's set between 76-78 most of the time. I will drop it down to 75 sometimes but that's the lowest. I also run the ceiling fans which really helps move the cool air.

Heat ranges from 62-68 depending on time of day.

We keep the a/c between 76-79. I live in Texas and since we run the a/c nearly continuously from may-sept, having it slightly warmer keeps the bills down.

Winter is 68.

80. Sometimes higher. We find that if we reduce the humidity in the house (which any AC temp will do), and run the ceiling fans, 80 is fine. We do have the luxury of a reverse floor plan though....our bedrooms are on the lower level where it stays 5 degrees cooler than the main level.

I hate going into buildings where the AC is set too low. I'm always dressed for SUMMER, and if it's lower than 76, I feel like I need long sleeves and long pants!

Sounds like your AC needs a tune up. That is too low, meaning it sounds as if your unit is not working properly.

We go as low as 72 at night and about 75 in the day. It is going to be about 100 here today and if you go lower than that the unit might freeze over because it cannot keep it low with 100 temps outside.

We also change it at will. ;)

Thanks for all the responses----guess there is no one right answer!!! I tend to like it at 73/74, but husband wants it more like 75/76. Guess we'll just keep playing the change-the-temp game!

And not sure about this....

I'm not quite sure what you mean. What sounds like it's not working? Think I might have missed something there!

I think the PP may have read your heat temps as your a/c temps.

Your temperature gauge. If you have to set it that low it may not be working properly.

In addition setting that low can cause the coils to freeze which means it is not cooling correctly which is why you have to set it that low.

Do you have another temp. thing that you can put in the house to see what your inside temp says? I would do that if I were you, just to see if you AC unit is working properly.:thumbsup2

Ummmm.....that's my winter setting for my heat! My husband works for a heating/AC company---if our system were that far off, believe me, I'd hear about it!!!! ;)

I too prefer the windows open and the fresh air. We keep our ac at 78 during the day and kick it back to 74 at night so it will cool the upstairs.

As for heat, 73 during the day and 68 at night.

We went to a friends for the 4th and she had her air set at 71! It was freezing in her house. I needed long pants and a sweatshirt!

77 most of the time. Our upstairs does not get as cool (cape style house, with no return air vent upstairs) so I run fans that sit right on the floor in front of the heat/ac vent in each upstairs bedroom to help move the cool air.

I did notice since we got our new puppy and we are keeping the upstairs bedroom doors closed to keep her out, that the bedrooms are staying slightly cooler than normal; we used to keep the doors all open to allow the cool air to circulate, but have found that keeping the doors closed keeps the cool air in each room.
