Hi Gang,
We are looking into getting a DVC, been many times to the states and didn't realise it was viable to have a DVC and be UK based, until we came across your fantastic forum.
We have lots of reading to do as we are in the early stages of looking into this adventure,. Excited but also apprehensive at the scale of things, with US bank account, how many points are enough and where to base ourselves.
I look forward to getting to know people on here and be guided by your knowledge. :)

I just wanted to say welcome and hello :goodvibes
Lot's of great info on here and lots of people to answer your Qs.
This is the first place I came when I was thinking about buying into DVC
We now own at VWL and haven't regetted it for a second :)

:welcome: to the DIS. It's great to have you here and, as Linda says, there are lots of fab people on hand to give you plenty of advice. Feel free to ask any questions you might have :)

Thank you for your kind welcomes.
I have been doing plenty of reading up, my head is spinning lol.
It seems resell is the way to go for us, the difference in price paid for points is crazy!
Buying direct from Disney seems very expensive.
I presume resell is a long-winded road but we're in no rush.
We're in Orlando in 10 weeks, is it easy to set up a US bank account whilst we're out there?
I seen a bank called Sun something has been mentioned, not sure of the full name?
Regards finchy3

Hi

I'm in the process of completing on a resale BLT contract as our first DVC purchase and we are based in the UK. We've been twice already and rented points.
We had our offer accepted 15/11,
signed contracts 22/11 (seller delayed)
ROFR 16/12
Closed 22/1/14 (seller delayed!), now awaiting DVC member account set up and points addition.

So you can see it does take some time for the process, although, I'm sure it can be done quicker if sellers are on the ball. Also, we did all this from the UK, but had done our research here and whilst over there.
You can set up a suntrust account, however, you only need this if you want to pay your dues monthly, if you are happy paying annually then use a no-FX credit card. If you do want to set up a bank account I think you need a min $100 and ID when you are over there.

Overall it's a pretty straight forward process as long as you use one of the main brokers.

Hope this helps

Thank you for that information, thats good to hear about no-FX card as that will be easier. How did you make your purchase payments? Was it a bankers draft?
I noticed that you have to reply to the agreement within 7 days with 10% deposit, was this difficult being in the UK or is there a quicker way?
I imagine your so excited now your near the end of the process, congratulations :)

Thanks, looking forward to our first reservation at the BLT.

Just to be clear you can pay by any credit card, however, it's obviously beneficial to incur minimal costs. The benefits I've also heard re: setting up a suntrust account is if the pound:dollar is favourable, as it is now, you can transfer money at that rate.

I did a bit of research regarding the purchase payments. I know some brokers take the deposit by Credit card, ours didn't. People mentioned, Hi-FX, XE.com, and transferwise as good options. We used currencyfair, as there were minimal costs involved and good exchange rates (1.63 and only a £3 cost). it does add extra steps as you have to transfer the money from your account in to their account and then transfer it into the dollar account etc but it saved me a couple hundred pounds so I found it worth it. Whatever, you do I would avoid the main banks as their charges are obscene!

As I have mentioned before I load my fairfx card up and pay my monthly payments and dues via that. No bank charges at all. I do pay direct to disney though as bought through them.

Welcome to the Dis and to DVC.:)
we bought in 2005 and as so many say it was the best thing we ever invested in.:thumbsup2our future holidays.:thumbsup2
We pay by Fair FX.question for those in the know if you open a sun trust account can you get a disney visa card?;)

I do not think so. You have to have a US address as far as I am aware.

The Disney Visa is with chase bank - for the CC you need to be a US resident :(

Probably could get a debit card if you opened a checking account but their requirements to avoid a fee are a lot higher than suntrust.
