What's everyone planting for Spring?

I am tilling up my garden patch this week. I had hopes to have built my raised beds but life got in the way. Already have my seeds but can't recall what all I'm planting --- I will look once I get a chance this week and post. I do know that I'm planting my tomatoes and pepper plants in pots. The tomatoes I'm planting are called Italian Ice, they are a white tomato, and the peppers are sweet peppers. We don't eat a lot of tomatoes or peppers so there is no reason to have them take up space in the garden.

I hope to have the tilling done by Tuesday so I have time to weed and let the ground rest before the rains next week. Then by the first week of March, I will add in my organic fertilizer and start planting. Should have produce by June.

As soon as the 2 feet of snow and ice are meted, I'll let you know :)

We do have a Palram greenhouse and I have to clean it out once the temps get above freezing. It's still a mess from October when I threw all the pots in there and shut the door for the crappy season we had last year.

Amazing how much effort and $ go into getting about $26 in produce. I will say that we have lots of volunteer dill growing through all of our rock paths in March usually. Sort of neat to have that come up way before we even have a chance to mow the first time. It's so muddy then we can carefully pull it up and plant it in a pot. 4' tall by the end of April if we don't use it all first.

I had planted beans, eggplant, tomato, sunflower, and some other things. I think i am going to just use one of my gardens this time around.

Glad to hear I'm not alone in this year's Spring planting.

I pulled the tractor out on Monday and tilled up my garden. It's roughly a 40 ft x 30ft plot. I did it just in time --- it rained on Wednesday and immediately the temperatures dipped back down around freezing. So I'm hoping that will kill the weeds. Now I'm just waiting for my Pecan trees to start putting out blooms (because this marks the end of the cold weather). Pecan trees are an amazing indicator for our weather and since they haven't started to bloom, I have to wait. But that's ok, it gives me more time to get the ground ready. Still need to weed it and mix in the fertilizer and once the pecan blooms appear, it's planting time.

This is what I'm planting in the 40ft x 30ft garden spot:
Cabbage, Soybean, Lettuce, Ronde de Nice squash, Red Kuri Squash, Okra, Broccoli, Beets, Sweet Potato Squash, Bok Choi, Carrot, Sorbet Watermelon, and Cantaloupe.

I have 2 - 5ft x 5ft raised beds and they will contain:
Asparagus Peas, Yellow Pear & Italian Ice Tomato, and Strawberries

Sounds like you will have a great garden!

I was looking in the farmer's almanac this weekend to see when the recommended Spring planting date is ---- looks like I will be planting on the 10th. My DH thinks I should wait til April but that means the veggies will go through part of July (hot month) which I don't want to do. Anyone else go by the planting dates in the farmer's almanac? Are you successful during your growing season?

I'm jealous of all your spring efforts. Stupid snow! I'll be in the summer planting thread at this point.

Can't wait to read more about what you are planting. I really need to do veggies this year, the cost of produce is just getting out of hand.

With all the Spring weather, I'm in the mood to plant the world. Still having to let the garden sit after turning it --- the birds are loving it --- they have been eating lots of bugs. Hopefully, in another week or so and the little seeds will down.

But since I'm in the mood to plant, my DH stopped and bought me two new trees the other day. He made me so happy. He picked up a Weeping Willow and a Flowering Crabapple. YAY!

I hope to run by the local nursery and pick up some pretty bright flowers to put in my pots. I'm so tired of seeing drab browns ---- its time for color!

Finally had a gorgeous day today. On the up side the snow is melting rapidly, on the down side I can see the yard and it's in rough shape. We are supposed to get more snow Thursday but hopefully that will be the last of it.

YAY! I got my garden planted Monday, flowers planted in my pots, and three more trees: a fig, another crapapple, and a pear. Now, if I can keep my cats out of the garden I will be in good shape. Any ideas? Right now, I think I may have to fence in the garden but I really don't want too. The garden is right outside my door and I really don't want a fence that close to the house.

(I need the cats, they are my barn cats and they definitely earn their keep. They make sure to leave me little surprises to remind me that they do their job.)

I just got my seeds from the local seed library in my area. I'm really excited to start growing local heirlooms this year. Plus, the seed packets are really cool and drawn by artists!

Oh, I love the seed packets. Such a cute idea to showcase artist's artwork. They would make a unique decoration.

Neat!

My peas started to sprout :cool1:

Peas are the easiest and most rewarding to grow I think! They just sprout up like crazy! My friend only plant them on St. Patrick's Day. I love the strong gardening superstitions inherited by generations of farming. It's really interesting.

The kale and lettuce are coming up.....so this week I've got to spend some time thinning the plants to encourage growth.

How is everyone's garden coming along?

Everything seems to be coming up. We did have to replant the watermelon and cantaloupe. Right after I planted the garden, the nighttime temperatures dipped back down into the 30s. So I lost the entire row of melon plants, but I did find reserve seed. If all my bush beans make, we will have tons of beans -- I'm excited. It's so much fun to watch a garden go from nothing but dirt and seed to plants loaded with vegetables and fruit. If everything goes well, my spring garden should be overflowing with produce next month.

Hope the weather cooperates with you Heather.

My garden is coming along nicely. I planted more pea seeds, and another tomato seedling. I don't have much space to add in anything else veggie wise. But, I do want to pick up a few flower bulbs, or plants for the corner of my garden. I like to have color mixed in with all the different green colors.

So it's autumn in my part of the world.

I finally weeded out and tilled over one side of the garden beds, the east side. It should see full sun for most of the day in that part of the garden.

I got some blood and bone, organic compost and some potash into the soil today, turned it over a bit and then planted it with kale, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots and snow peas. As a border, I've put in some lettuce and interspersed that with oregano and thyme.

I know....it might be too cold for lettuce and I might lose them to the cold; but it was a lot cheaper getting a punnet of the lettuce seedlings than getting more oregano and thyme. If not, I might get some pansy or violas in a month or so to add some colour to the bed.

I've watered it all in and thrown down some snail pellets as well.

We'll see how it goes.

I'm slowly going to weed the flower beds and pull dead plants out. There should be sufficient space; and I hope to put in another round of crop in about 3 weeks time. I might try spinach instead of kale next time round.
