DH an I went grocery shopping this afternoon there was an old man in store that was very stinky in desperate need of a shower an some clean clothes. DH an I passed him once, then the old man caught up with us I had to leave the area because I had to go outside an be sick.

DH decides lets kill some time read the ad again go back see if we missed anything trying to let the old man an his body odor get way ahead of us. NO such luck every where we went in the store there was the stinky old man.

We been home an hour an still feeling ill. We did notice there was no crowd around the stinky old man NO one could stand to be within 20 feet of him.

My own grandfather only bathed and changed clothes once a week had no a/c an in the summer could get pretty stinky. Mom did his laundry for years an often would sit his laundry outside in the summer.

This old man in the store made my grandfather an his summer time laundry smell like the best perfume ever.

I feel sorry for the cashier who had to ring up this old mans order as they did not have the option the rest of us in store had of running away.

oh brother, I'm getting the popcorn:: ready for the responses to this post. There could be any number of reasons for the man's hygiene, and I'm sure there are going to be other DIS"ers who will let you know about them!

As someone who works with the older population I know that smell but I also know how hard it can be for some of the elderly to shower/bathe on their own. The mobility and flexibility just isn't there anymore and something as simple as stepping into a bathtub can be an impossible maneuver for them. Lots of people have family or visiting caregivers to help but some don't.

I'd feel sorry for the guy rather than racing home to tell the story to strangers.

Maybe he doesn't have money for laundry, or know how. Maybe he is off his mental health meds. Maybe he can't get into a bath. Maybe he can't smell. Maybe he has Alzheimer's and doesn't remember to care for himself.

It's like the baby shower thread all over.

Come on people, put a little love in your heart.

Maybe the old man was homeless or truly didn't have resources to take care of himself.

You felt sorry for the cashier but not for the old man? Wow....:sad2:

I had lunch with 2 of my friends yesterday one of my friends DH has Alzheimer's and she said she is having a hard time getting him to bathe. Said he use to always bathe now he tells her he doesn't need to get into the shower that he doesn't smell.
So him having Alzheimer's was the first thing that went through my mind.

Really sick for over an hour?

I couldn't have said it better.

The lack of empathy I've witnessed recently online literally breaks my heart. It's almost as if no one cares about anyone but themselves.

If he was truly disheveled, the store should of called the police and asked for a wellness check. If the man is ill, he may not even know he is dirty. Otherwise, they could help him find the right resources to help.

Agree. Compassion is what makes the world ok

You raced to post this story and shame an elderly man who may or may not be able to help his problem? Thank goodness there are kind people like yourself. Really. Hope you feel good about yourself.

Isn't the OP the one who once threw an outdoor party where people went to the bathroom in a bucket?

As a nurse that works exclusively with the Medicare population this story makes me sad. Many of my pts have no family support and many have varying levels of dementia. If it was as severe as you report it's likely that APS needed to check in on him.

It disgusts me how this country does so little for its senior citizens that have worked their lives and paid into the system. If they don't qualify for medicaid (have to bring in less than 937$ a month!) they often have to choose which of their px to refill. That should not happen here!
