The Wizard Hat

Can someone please explain to me why they removed the hat from mgm? And what are they going to do with the empty space? In my opinion they should have kept the hat, and have m&g's with wizard Mickey. But that's just my opinion. :sad2:

The hat was unnecessary and was installed for the "100 years of magic" that ended in 2002.

Neither the hat...nor the festival made any sense. Walt Disney had been dead for 35 years and it was a "celebration" of his birth in 1901. You celebrate the anniversary of an accomplishment...not a birth...except unique circumstances..like major world changing figures and/or folklore

That was open space before and can become it again. That is the closest thing MGM has to a "central plaza"

There are also rampant rumors about major work/redesign in the park...so removing the hat there first makes sense from a logistics standpoint as well

...AND the hat threw off the perspective of the whole street. Standing at the front gate, gazing down to the theatre just didn't look right. That hat offended my architect's sensibilities from the moment I first saw it. I'm glad it's gone!

Agreed...the EPCOT "2000" was a best idea...on a TEMPORARY basis...according to my engineers sensibilities...
Even though it affected the look if the geodesic sphere.

The hat was vanity/stupidity during mad Michaels later years.

The gargantuan Sorcerer Mickey hat blocking the view of the world-famous movie theater at the end of the park's Hollywood Blvd made as much sense as having a 100-foor-tall fake-looking Glass Slipper sitting in the middle of the Plaza at MK, blocking the view of Cinderella Castle.

Not only was that "hat" completely out of place, it looked more like a blue plastic traffic cone than a silk sorcerer cap.

As far as the "empty space" is concerned, I would be very happy to have a Plaza as the hub of the park, with trees, planters, benches, walkways, with an old Hollywood fair.

Just curious if the hat is completely down yet? Are the construction walls down yet? I've never seen it without the hat and looking forward to the "new" view when we arrive 3/13.

Its very close. Should be gone within the next few days hopefully

Wow! DanBoris' post really puts it in perspective. The location always seemed strange. Sorcerer Mickey and the Sorcerer's Apprentice scene is in of my favorite Disney momemts of all time, hope it has a place somehow.

Sorcerer Mickey and the Sorcerer's Apprentice scene from "Fantasia" continue to be represented inside the Great Movie Ride. The gigantic hat is being demolished and will not reappear anywhere else on property.

The photos that DanBoris posted are from a Yesterland article, "Please Remove Your Hat" at http://www.yesterland.com/removehat.html, with information about the history of the hat.

My opinion is that there's a place for oversized decorations at value resorts, but not in the theme parks.

Fantasmic has a bit of a fantasia tie in also... Does it not?

I actually hope fantasmic goes too...as once again... It's gotten stale and they keep running it out there in perpetuity

Agreed - we just don't even bother with Fantasmic anymore - I don't think they've changed it in 10 years...certainly not worth the time standing in line if you've seen it more than once....

I love the old Hollywood look without the hat. If they are actually "reimagining" the area, I hope that they don't come up with something else that blocks the view.
