Hello Everyone!

I've really enjoyed reading various dining reviews on these forums and thought I'd go ahead and start adding some of my own experiences to a thread as well :) As many of you, our family loves spending time at the Disney parks and we really enjoy eating at various restaurants to experience a variety of cuisines and atmospheres.

To make it easier to just add posts to a single thread, I'll just be editing this top post to link straight to each dining review. These are the reviews currently posted:

Restaurant: Be Our Guest
Location: Magic Kingdom - Fantasyland
Meal Type: Dinner

Atmosphere: I think it’s pretty safe to say that the atmosphere for this restaurant is one of the best for themed dining experiences. On this visit, we had dinner in the West Wing. This room is considerably darker than the Ball Room or the Rose Garden, but it was perfect for dinner. There are also thunder and lightning effects, so it might be a bit scary for little kids. But, there are a couple of magic things that happen in this room that you don’t want to miss!

20150606_204246.jpg

In the far corner of the room, there is the enchanted rose under glass. If you watch it closely, the magical petals fall from the rose over time. As the last petal falls, the Prince’s Portrait transforms from a slashed image of the Prince to a slashed picture of the Beast. My 6 year old daughter first pointed out the picture transformation to us. Originally she said it happened when the thunder and lightning struck, but we eventually asked what the trigger was when we couldn’t pinpoint it.

Food:
Rolls - They serve a basket of freshly baked rolls and some soft served butter once you sit down at the table. The rolls are a little on the hard side (I'm sure they must have a fancy French name), but they were still yummy. Sorry, no pic though : /

French Onion Soup – We’ve had this on a previous trip as well. The description says they use Gruyere cheese, but it honestly tastes more like mozzarella. There is little onion in the soup and more cheese than bread on top, making the flavor a little cheesy for my taste when it comes to a good French Onion Soup. It’s definitely good, but I do not think it’s fabulous.

Grilled Strip Steak – My husband had this for dinner and thought it was wonderful. The steak was cooked perfectly Medium and he really enjoyed the flavor of the Garlic-Herb Butter.

Braised Pork (Coq au Vin Style) – I had this slow-cooked pork for dinner. The meat was extremely tender and had a nice flavor. It’s cooked with “Mushrooms, Onions, Carrots, and Bacon”, but as you can see from the picture, there were no carrots and only a few traces of the other ingredients. It’s also served with a seasonal vegetable. I thought this was going to be green beans (as I’ve seen in an older review), but it turned out to be asparagus. Next time I’ll remember to ask for a substitute J I’ve never eaten cauliflower, but the puree was actually really good since it was mixed with the meat sauce!

Kids' Mickey Check Meal - Chicken Brochette – My 6-yearold daughter ordered this for her dinner. It’s essentially just a skewered strip of plain, baked chicken, so this was a good option for my picky eater. She asked for fries instead of the seasonal vegetable. There was still broccoli included with her meal, so she enjoyed both sides.

20150606_210435.jpg

Kids' Mickey Check Meal - Mickey Meatloaf- My 4 year old son had this and loved it! He dug in and started eating so quickly that by the time I thought about taking a picture it was nearly gone already. He also substituted some fries for the zucchini, but the meal still came with broccoli. He didn’t want to try the “Orange "Stuff" for Dipping” and since I’m not that brave either, I’m still not sure what the heck it actually is (maybe a ketchup and mayo mix?).

Kid’s Dessert Note: Unlike other Disney table service restaurants that have a kid’s choice dessert you order after the meal, they automatically list and assign the fruit cup with the kid’s meals. If you do not order the kid’s dessert, then the dessert price is deducted from the kid’s meal price. On the Be Our Guest menu, it lists the Fruit Cup dessert with each kid meal. If you do not want the fruit cup, let your server know when you place your order. Otherwise, they bring the fruit cup out automatically with the child’s dinner and the $1.75 charge is added on to the bill. They forgot to bring my son’s fruit with the meal, so that charge was removed later.

Meeting the Beast: Dinner is the only meal when the Beast makes an appearance. He will briefly walk into each of the three dining rooms to wave and “welcome his guests” each hour, but does NOT go table to table like at other character meals. Once you have finished your meal, there is the opportunity to wait in line for a photo with the beast in “his study” (a.k.a. the menu/register room used for breakfast and lunch quick services) on the way out of the restaurant. We only waited about 5-10 minutes in line on the way out, so it wasn’t bad at all. Our dinner was a bit late in the evening though (8:35-9:15ish), so I’m not sure if that made a difference or not.

Adding It Up: Here’s the break-down for those interested. We are AP holders, so I have no idea how a dining plan would apply. We do have the Tables in Wonderland card though, so it deducts 20% from the total cost and automatically includes an 18% gratuity during use. (You have the option to write in additional gratuity after the transaction if you choose to do so)

Overall Impression: We really enjoyed dinner at Be Our Guest. It’s a bit pricey in comparison to their lunch menu, but it was a nice experience to let the kids meet the Beast! If you are not interested in meeting him (or are happy just seeing him in a parade), then visiting this restaurant for lunch might be a nicer option.

Restaurant: The Coral Reef
Location: Epcot – Future World
Meal Type: Lunch

Atmosphere: Everything in this restaurant from the carpet, to the ceiling, and the light fixtures in between add to the feeling that you are completely under the sea for this dining experience. It’s not a very large dining room, so the noise level wasn’t bad at all and made for a nice lunch environment. (stock img)

Upon checking in for our 1:25 lunch reservation, I requested a table up against the aquarium. I’m sure quite a few people must request this, and although the restaurant was busy, we only ended up waiting in the lobby for about 10minutes and were happily seated right up against the tank. They issue you a Creature Guide to identify the animals in the aquarium tank during your visit, and the close table was perfect for viewing the smaller fish up close and being able to identify them on the guide. It was also the perfect spot to get up close and personal with some sharks and a very curious turtle as well!

Food:

Rolls and Butter– They started the meal by bringing out a basket or warm rolls and some butter with black sea salt for the table to share. I’m not sure you can really go wrong with warm bread and butter, so I’d say it was delicious J

Rolls-and-butter-start-the-meal.jpg

Creamy Lobster Soup – This soup is described as being made with made with Tarragon and Brandy. I honestly could not tell you what either of those ingredients taste like individually, but the soup did have a nice flavor, so it definitely worked! There were only a couple of small pieces of lobster meat in the soup though, so if you are looking for lobster chunks, you might be disappointed. Overall, it was still a really nice tasting soup and something I would order again.

CreamyLobsterSoup.jpg

Caesar Salad with Chicken Breast – Since it was lunch, I opted for a salad. I will definitely say this is probably the best chicken Caesar salad I’ve had at any of the Disney Parks so far. The portion was really large and the Caesar dressing was great. The salad was a little underdressed, but I had asked for extra dressing on the side originally, so I just added to it. The cheese crisp was really yummy as well!

salad.jpg

Seared Mahi Mahi – My husband chose the mahi, which (according to the waitress) is their signature dish. It was served with Laughing Bird Shrimp, Hearts of Palm, Jasmine Rice, Cilantro, and a Coconut-Lime Sauce. We are normally Mahi fans, but neither of us cared for the taste of his mahi, so he sent it back.

Coral Reef Mac & Cheese – My son had the mac and cheese and seemed to approve of it. It was a very large portion, so he only ate half of it before he didn’t want anymore. It was pretty much just a standard elbow mac with velveeta cheese and didn’t seem like anything special, but as long as he enjoyed it, that’s all that mattered.

MAc.jpg

Jr. Reef Steak – Through process of elimination, my daughter opted for the kid’s steak. Although the steak looked beautiful, she really didn’t eat much of it. Looking back, I should have tried to request some simple fried shrimp instead and she would have been much happier I think. The broccoli was steamed nicely though and she did enjoy that.

Dessert – For dessert, the kids requested the Seaside Cupcakes. It was a plain vanilla cake with light icing that was topped with fish shaped sprinkles and a sugar shaped starfish.

Adding it Up: This is the break-down for those interested. They removed the mahi from the bill since we sent it back and my husband chose not to try anything else from here. 20% was deducted for the Tables in Wonderland membership and an automatic 18% was added for gratuity with TiW use (option to write in more afterwards).

Scan0001.jpg

Overall Impression: We liked the restaurant for the atmosphere more than the food. It’s something we enjoyed doing once, but since there are other tank viewing options within the park, we’ll probably skip this as a restaurant option next time and go to one of Epcot’s many other restaurants.

I love the details on the kids meals! My son will be 4 when we go & eats like a horse, when he eats (it's pretty much feast or famine). I've been looking at menu's & wondering how he'd do, so actually seeing some pictures is awesome!! And I really love the way you have the whole meal experience broken down. :)

Great reviews!! Thanks for sharing. Can't wait to read more.

We also really liked the steak at Be Our Guest. Looks like the pork is great too!!

My husband hasn't been to BOG yet. I am hoping to get a table so he can enjoy that steak. Thanks for the review, love hearing about what your family enjoyed!

I've been enjoying your style of reviews. I love that you added the receipt on top of the pictures of everything. Can't wait to hear more about your dining adventures.

Restaurant: Be Our Guest
Location: Magic Kingdom - Fantasyland
Meal Type: Breakfast

Atmosphere: Right from the castle entrance, this restaurant is over-the-top incredible in terms of immersive atmosphere. Inside the castle, you’ll be sorted into one of two lines that lead to the right and into The Study: The Cashier Line (for those guests who have already pre-ordered their meal), or The Menu Line (for guests that still need to use a touch screen to select their meals). If you get a chance, I’d recommend using the link on your MDE reservation page to pre-order before you go and save yourself some time. We had a 8:30am pre-park ressie this day and even at that time, the tiny order/pay room gets rather full with people taking a bit of time just reading the menu. I think the pre-order option opened up around two weeks before our scheduled ressie and I was glad we went ahead and did it.

On this trip, we sat in The Rose Garden room to the right of the Ball Room. It looks as if the first guests in only had the choice of sitting in the Ball Room, because once we walked in, they had just unblocked the Rose Garden room to start filling it next and we had our choice of any seat. There’s a large, rotating Life-Sized Music Box right in the center of the room and my kids wanted to sit right next to it.

The room itself is really lovely. Even if you don’t dine in this room, definitely walk around and take a look at all of the lovely artwork on the walls!

There are interesting sites in each room of the restaurant, so be sure to take a look around :) The beautiful mosaic piece that looks like a castle's stained glass window is right next to the exit door when you are leaving the restaurant.

Food:

A Selection of Pastries – This is listed as side that accompanies each of the meals. They bring out one plate of pastries with your order, with an amount probably determined by how many are in your party. Although the pastries were tasty, it can become a situation amongst kids when multiple people decide that they want the tiny muffin that doesn’t cut well when trying to split it ;)

Drinks – When you order your breakfast, there are a variety of drink choices to select. We went with the Chocolate Milk and Orange Juice choices when ordering because those items are brought to your table with the meal in individual single-serve bottles. There is, however, a nice self-service drink station located in each of the rooms. Our food delivery server informed us that we could help ourselves to any of the drinks there (Coffee, hot chocolate, hot tea, sodas…) as well. It worked out better because I was able to pass off my OJ to my husband and have coffee instead and the kids enjoyed a hot chocolate, then we had the chocolate milk bottles to take out into the park as we left.

*While you are up grabbing your drinks, it's an excellent time to locate the Silverware cart and grab the utensils you'll need once breakfast is delivered to your table.

Eggs Florentine – My husband and I both ordered this selection. It is described as a “Puff Pastry Shell filled with Scrambled Eggs, Cheese, and fresh Spinach served with Country Ham, Roasted Plum Tomatoes”. My thoughts – I wished thee was a bit more egg and spinach in the shell, as eating the shell alone is a little dry without mixing bites. I don’t care for cream cheese, so I just scooped out that little blob. The ham pieces were also pretty dry and on the small side. I don’t care for roasted tomatoes in general and the cashier informed us that there are no substitutes, so I didn’t try these. Overall, it was ok. I wasn’t wowed with it, but since there were elements of the dish I didn’t try, other guests that eat those items might enjoy the overall meal more. My husband’s thoughts– He was underwhelmed with the dish. He thought it was “ok”, but that the portion was really small.

IMG_2039-600x450.jpg

Scrambled Eggs – The kids both had this for breakfast. It’s described as being served with Applewood Bacon and Fresh Fruit. This was a pretty straightforward and simple dish. The kids don’t care for melon or grapes, so they ended up just eating the few strawberries. Again, there was no option to substitute for something like yogurt instead, which was a bit disappointing. Our kids are usually so tired by the end of the day, that they eat a very light dinner, meaning that they are usually very hungry creatures when it’s time for breakfast. That being said, my 4-year old son devoured the two eggs and bacon and then wanted more. So, again, the portion might be a bit small for kiddos with hungry morning appetites.

Adding it up: The receipt was destroyed on a late afternoon visit to Splash Mountain (they mean it when they say “you may get wet!”), but here’s the break-down of what it was. (A Tables in Wonderland discount only applies to dinner at this restaurant)
  • Eggs Florentine with Orange Juice 19.99 x 2 = $39.98
  • Scrambled Eggs with Chocolate Milk 11.99 x 2 = $23.98
    • After 6.5% tax - Total = $68.12

Overall Impression: My husband has instructed me never to book another breakfast at Be Our Guest, even if it’s a pre-park opening ressie : / The food was decent, but in terms of overall value and cuisine options fit for our family (we’re prefer a pretty All-American/traditional breakfast), it just wasn’t for us. I would still recommend still eating here if you’ve never been here and breakfast is the only slot you can get since it’s definitely a beautiful restaurant to see, if you don’t mind light breakfast portions without substitutions, or if you can grab a pre-park opening reservation to get into the park much earlier and be in a good position to hit the attractions.
