Taking walk ups at Skippers Canteen today?

I predict the place will crash and burn with that menu. I give them 3 month before they "rework" it. That kind of food does not appeal to the masses at WDW. I, personally, wouldn't eat there and I like a lot of differing kinds of food. Most of this sounds awful to me. The kids menu is laughable.
Menus are almost always reworked, not just after a few weeks but continually. There were those who said that Yak and Yeti would "crash and burn" with menu items like pho. So they got rid of the pho after a while but still serve curry (along with burgers and fried chicken).

By the way, fish collar is highly prized. Cooking any meat on the bone tends to make that meat taste better. Collar meat is sweeter, juicier, more tender, and has a richer flavor than the filet meat.

My niece ate here yesterday. She had lunch reservations at BOG at 2, so they only ordered appetizers and a dessert. She said that it wasn't very good. They didn't eat much of it, and the kids wouldn't eat the lava cake even. They ordered the chicken noodle soup, and it was so bad, the waitress took it off their bill. Nevertheless it was $80 for two adults and two kids (ages 7 & 5).

if anyone is there today can they let us know what the walk up procedure is...like what time they open and when people started lining up for a table? We will be trying to go for lunch tomorrow and any feedback would be greatly appreciated :D

I was worried about the menu.... We aren't adventurous eaters. However, I feel like it's a combination of both. What is so adventurous about pork chops or a steak? What am I missing? I'm pretty sure that's what we'll order! Now the desserts don't look that appealing to me... but I'm willing to try anything once. We will definitely be trying this place in January!

if anyone is there today can they let us know what the walk up procedure is

1) All Soft Opening eateries have the same walk-up procedure.
. . . there are no ADR's or FP's during the Soft Opening period
. . . one checks in
. . . the podium person (aka, "SEATER") takes your name and you wait for a table
. . . in many cases, the wait time for a table is usually 30-60 minutes
2) As for open times, Skipper Canteen accepts walk-ins up to 6:30pm
3) Due to the nature of Soft Opening, they can open and/or close multiple times during the day.
. . . you could be walking by, and they announce they are open
. . . you could be in-line for 45-minutes and they announce they are closed for hours or for the day

NOTE: Even though I am still on crutches, we are going to try for a meal on Wednesday. Film at eleven.

In addition to this, there are reports they are doing a text pager system https://twitter.com/TheDCLBlog/status/676073665629433856

It was very good. Skipper Morgan said the vegetable curry was one of her favorites. The mac and cheese is like a greek pasitisio but with different seasoning. I would order it again.

My Greek husband would be really excited about having a pastitsio-like dish. My family is pretty adventurous so the menu looks good to me. All my kids will eat grilled fish and chicken, so the kids meals should work well, too. We currently have a dinner ADR at BOG, but I'm considering cancelling that to eat here instead.

The restaurant looks amazing, thanks for taking the time to post pics. The menu is more exotic than I would have guessed. The entrees look good and the desserts look fabulous! The only items I personally am not crazy about are the apps. I was thinking we would try a lunch and a dinner for our upcoming trip Feb/Mar but we may just stick to lunch.

I thought the apps looked like the best part of the menu. :) It all looks good but I'm currently figuring out which app I can talk my son into ordering so I can try more than one!

Only thing I'm disappointed in is that I don't see anything vegetarian on the kids menu. There's never anything on the healthy kids menu vegetarian either which is frustrating. Otherwise, looks good.

Yeah. My one wish would be for a meatless kid option. My youngest is not a big meat eater. I wonder if they'll make the mac and cheese without the meat? Otherwise she'll cope. We're not actual vegetarians, so that's an option for us.

The menu doesn't look like anything special to me. I guess I expected more seafood and/or exotic items. I will still give it a try though!

I think they went for "exotic" in the appetizers more than the entrees. I think lots of Americans will find falafel and shiu mai fairly novel. I wonder if they maybe decided that the entrees should be reasonably tame with interesting choices for the apps and desserts.

I'm super excited about this one. We have a back up ADR for Liberty Tree but it looks so... boring. Here's hoping I can score SC!

I could say the same thing about people who have allergies, but you see Disney bending over backwards to accommodate that population. Selective eating due to developmental disorders is just as limiting. Why don't they seem to care as much about that population?

I don't think Disney could possibly provide menu options to serve the entire population of people with developmental disorders. It's one thing to provide information about ingredients or to remove ingredients from a dish or slightly alter the preparation because of allergies, etc. It's completely another thing to have a kitchen stocked for any possible scenario. My nephew, who is on the spectrum, has a very limited list of things he will eat - most of which would never be on any restaurant menu. My sister does not expect any restaurant we go to to have those items on hand. She packs them with her and everyone is happy.

In addition to this, there are reports they are doing a text pager system

Yes,they told me it would be 30 minutes at check-in,then got a text about 5 minutes later telling me again it would be 30 minutes and I could decline at that point if desired-then I got a second text about 10 minutes later that my table was ready:so the 30 minute wait was actually about 15.:)

The menu looks great, and i agree with several PP's, if it isn't for you, there are PLENTY of run of the mill options in MK. I sincerely hope that they don't alter this menu to please the meat and potatoes crowd. We deal with food allergies as a family and I don't expect every restaurant to bend over backwards for us. There are some places we simply don't go because it isn't safe. Same should apply to other food related issues. If they aren't serving something you can eat, pick another place. No restaurant should have to completely alter it's menu for you. My DH has a shellfish allergy and we don't go places that don't offer options without shellfish, and before anyone screams "that's an easy allergy to get around, ect" we live in an area where a large amount of the economy depends on shellfish. Pretty much EVERY restaurant in the area serves them, and many are NOT cross contamination safe. It truly is an issue in a lot of restaurants.

I'm sure they are tasty.... I'm just weird about food... I like all kinds of flavors, but I don't eat a wide variety of proteins... and none that look back at me! I love shrimp, but they need to be fully "prepared!"
they are fully prepared when served head on. They aren't raw at all. It is really no different than boiled shrimp outside of the aesthetic and I can totally understand if you cannot get past that, just wanted you to know everything is definitely fully cooked and ready to eat. Its a common preparation here.

Thanks! I figured they were cooked... It's really just me... I have a hard time with certain foods and the eyes there looking back at me is a deal breaker... I don't even like eating ribs or wings because of the bone.... Reminds me too much of where it came from!!

1) I am pretty sure it's what we throw to the pelicans when cleaning fish.

2) At first sounded good but this line made me pause .. "they come with chunks of skin, bone, and fin."

That said, am sure the fisher folks in the family will be ordering it.

I'm betting more adventurous Asian cultures etc. won't bat an eye and will be happy to see something on the menu that THEY'RE familiar with. Disney has a very diverse crowd - they SHOULD offer foods that are multi-cultural to please more than the picky nose wrinklers who insist they don't like something before trying it and the usual down home on the farm meat and potatoes crowd.

We enjoy trying new and different stuff and I think this menu looks fun. We can get the same 'ole same 'ole at home any day of the week. That's why we enjoy dining at Disney - there's far more choices than just your regular Applebee's type fare.

Our DS was raised not to be picky as I did not cook special food just for him. I know plenty of people who would consistently cook chicken nuggets & mac & cheese for their kids rather than have them eat whatever they were eating. I never did that. He either ate what we were having or he would leave the table hungry. There are of course things that he does not like - everybody's entitled to have a few things they don't care for - but he can just pick around them. I'm not going to NOT make something with mushrooms or olives because he's going to make a face over them. Most of it is silly insistance that he doesn't like something without really giving it a good try. Like he will eat relish but insists he doesn't like pickles. OK, so whatever. I'm not pointing out the obvious to him….. I have a neighbor who's vegetarian - she eats cheese pizza, plain salads without dressing (just lettuce and maybe with some cucumber or broccoli) and will order cheese french fries when out. That's about it. She has never tried (nor is she willing to try) avocado, brussels sprouts, asparagus or artichokes. She is also probably the UNHEALTHIEST person I've ever known. Cracks me up that she thinks she is the healthy one with her limited vegetarianism…..

I can however sympathize with rainboots and her Dad situation. My Dad (upper 70's) is the same way. He was always picky and has always steered away from most fish (unless it was one he caught and cleaned himself) and all shellfish "just because" not because he was allergic or anything. The past 2 or 3 years tho his diet has been severely limited due to colon cancer leaving him stuck with a colostomy bag. There are many things he may WANT to eat but can't any more. He can't eat anything spicy and there are many things that just don't digest right any more.

All day they had staff out front with menus trying to get folks to go in.
Went tonight at 6:30 pm. Was told 15 minutes and took my info/phone number to text me.
First text was it would be about 15 minutes and if I didn't want to want text back Decline.
Second text came 2 minutes later that our table was ready.
Was taken on a tour of the whole restaurant with some JC joking.
Seated in the Crew Mess Hall (big room).
We opted for just dessert (big late lunch) and drinks.
We got 3 different desserts and both drinks in the mule mug.
Was told we got the last 2 mugs and they had none left at moment - we tried to order three (of course that could just be for tonight).
The desserts and drinks were delicious!!!
Smells were awesome.
Will for sure be going back.

Love love love the pager system. We walked by around 12:50. Were told it was 50 minutes. They took my phone number and we went over to the Jungle Cruise. 30 minutes later we were lounging in the comfy chairs by the restaurant entrance when our table was ready. Love the menu - wish we could have had one of everything. Does not sound like there will ever be alcohol. I asked about ADRs. Answer was they don't know when.

So happy we got to try it.

The prices are WAY too high as well. Especially the kids meals. $23 for a bowl of pho? $10.50 for a kids meal of chicken noodle soup and fruit???? $23 for a chicken breast with rice and stir fried veggies? Just nuts.

Am I the only one who thinks everything is priced at least $5 too high? I know it is MK but come on.
Pricing is probably at least partly to steer cost-"conscious" adult diners away from this poor value.
The kids menu is just abysmal. Disney really needs to understand that it's all well and good to offer kids stuff like fish and steak but they also need to have some more basic staple kids items available as well. I wish they would just offer "1/3 portions at 1/3 price" of any menu item for kids under 12 at every TS restaurant. And then have a standing kids menu with burgers, Mac and cheese, pasta with marinara, grilled cheese, chicken nuggets, pizza, and hot dogs at every resttaurant. How hard would that be?

One third the serving, maybe, but 1/3 the price will never happen. There's much more that goes into the cost of restaurants than just the food. Simple examples: it costs exactly the same to plate, serve, and clean up from a four ounce steak dinner as a 12 ounce.

The other suggestion, to have a "core" seven (or other number) item kids' menu at every.single.restaurant. doesn't make any sense from a business standpoint.
