Being Called The Wrong Name

Did your mother ever call you by your sibling's name? I'm an only child, yet my mother would occasionally call me her sister's name, or even one of her brothers!!

I'm just as guilty. I sometimes call one DD by the other's name.

I think every parent does that. And occasionally, my father calls me by my step mom's name, usually when he gets a little testy with me, which I find funny. My step mom will often refer to my gram and say, your mom, instead of your grandmother. She does that kind of thing all the time.

I'm Vanessa and my sister is Melissa. Despite the 5 year age difference, many people often got our names mixed up.

Yep, happened to me all the time. And I do it with my two boys as well. Fortunately, I only have two, so it doesn't take long to correct my mistake. :p

I used to think it was hilarious when my grandmother did this. She had 7 children. They all married and at the time of her death, she had 23 grandchildren. She would start with a name, realize it was wrong, then quickly try to correct herself -- only to get it wrong again. After several misses she would get frustrated and just yell, "oh, *insert swear word*!!" As soon as she did that everyone in the room would stop and turn around to see what she wanted.

Fast forward 30 years....I have three children (and to make it worse their names all start with the same letter) so I often end up calling them the wrong name. Especially if I'm busy or distracted.

Yes. My mom often called me my brother's name, or an uncle's, or even someone I don't know. I'm sure most parents do this. I mix up stepDs' names at times.

My grandmother always had trouble keeping all the grandkids' names straight.

All the time. Mom would often mix up my sister and my names. I do the same thing with both DDs, and both SILs, too. But its usually when I'm busy doing something and not really paying attention.

It's very common in big families for mom to have to go through several names before she gets the right one. The really scary part is when you have only one and you call that one by the wrong name. Oops....

Nope. I'm the oldest of four and it didn't happen with us. Grandkids on the other hand...

Yes, my parents did, and depending on my level of intensity/frustration, I've been known to go through the list til I get the right one as well.

That's what I didn't get. I'm an only child and my mother STILL got my name wrong at times.

I was one of four girls, it happened All. The. Time.... Once I even got the dog's name before my mom got it right....

Fast Forward to now. I have a son and a daughter. I don't mix them up, but I often call my daughter by my youngest sister's name. Often. :headache:

Yep. All.The.Time. And I do it to my girls :) I've called them by each others name, by my sisters name, by my friends name. When I was at school, my sister's friends would even say hi to me thinking I was her. Hated it. But, whats worse in my poor husband being called by his sisters name by teachers--9 yrs after she graduated!

My mom did pretty well. I just have one brother, so it was harder to mix us up. My grandmother, on the other hand, had several granddaughters, and I was quite frequently called by the name of the one right above me in age.

Yes! I only have one brother and my mom has never called me by his name, but she calls me her sister's and my daughter's names all the time. I sometimes call my daughter by the dog's name too.

I have a son and a daughter, and yes, I've called the by each others names...usually when I'm angry. My son has even been called the dog's name before. oops!
