Mouse keeping? Tip or no?

I'm French and housekeeping is seen as completely non-tipped to us too.

Nevertheless, when I was in WDW, I used to leave a tip (1$) near the pillow each day.

I tip about 5 per day per room, and I do this everywhere I stay. I know it is not necessary, but I like to. I am chief cook and bottle washer in my home, so a vacation for me includes no cooking and no housework. YAY!

I leave the room neat, and make sure my tip is where the mousekeeper knows it is to be taken, usually daily on my pillow with a note. I also have noticed that little things are done to make me feel welcomed. For instance, a blanket folded on the bottom of the bed every day when I used one to take a nap, and extra towels when it was obvious I had taken a few off the cart the day before.

My DH makes a point of finding the housekeeper wherever we stay and will give extra. He told me I was cheap...that the "little girl" cleaning the bathroom is the hardest working person he saw.

Yeah, I know... how strange is that?!
I was looking high and low between my trips ('05, '10, '13) for any changes in tipping the Mousekeeping... but like you said the "recommended" tip was always $1/person/day... :magnify:

Yes, I did tip some more eventually! :flower3:

:tinker:

I was wondering if it was being held back due to the dollar bill. Here in the UK we have no paper 1 pound it is a coin. So to give more of a tip in the US in paper people think oh my to tip $2 well that seems quite a hike so it never happens. You guys are not use to leaving coins like we are maybe. I can see why heavy for the mousekeepers to carry around. But here unless we want to tip £5 our minimum note we have to leave coins.

I tip $5 a day on days they come. We don't always use housekeeping, some days I just ask for new towels.

We always tip, about $2 per person. If im travelling to Disney solo, i'll still leave around $2-$3. I just leave it on my pillow. Works out well. I would feel bad not tipping someone who cleans up after me.

Housekeeping is by no means an easy job and that is why they are paid better than any front line position in hospitality. I do find that many people overtip as matter of being guilted into it by reading comments on boards like this (not bashing anyone). Tipping a housekeeper is a matter of preference. I personally don't do it unless I or my family have made a mess that would mean the Housekeeper will have to go above and beyond their routine to clean.

It's just my DH & me, we leave the room straightened up so there is just the basics for housekeeping. But even the basics include making the bed, removing & replacing towels, cleaning the sinks & mirrors, emptying garbages & vacuuming. We leave $5 a day. When we get turndown service, we leave about $3.

I prefer to have housekeeping there when I need them. So, I typically hang out the 'privacy please' hanger on my door. When I do need housekeeping, I take it off. Then I generally tip $3-5, depending on how many are in my group.

Thanks all. I like the room the be straightened up everyday and enjoy coming back to a tidy room. We are a family that has a hard time keeping our hotel room straight!! I think I will do little envelopes before we leave and have $5 in each one for everyday. Good point on it not always being the same person.

I make the little envelopes and put money in then prior to the trip; usually $4 a day total for me and DH, and if we leave something extra messy, I'll throw an extra $1 or two in. I bring them on my carry on bag, so they're ready to go when I get there. For me, it is a service thing...they always work so hard and leave us little towel animals or what have you.
For this upcoming trip, I'm doing a tiny bag with candy since we'll be there at Christmas time, and putting the envelope with it. Not necessary, but I like to spread Christmas cheer and pixie dust where I can! pixiedust:

My practice is to tip $5 per night at Disney or anywhere I stay, whether it is a business trip or pleasure. Yes, tipping is completely voluntary and I don't think less of people who think differently that me on the matter, nor do I think I am better than anyone else because I do it. I just figure that people like hotel maids (and servers at restaurants, for that matter) are doing a personal service for me for a lesser wage than many people would be satisfied with. I tip $5 p/n as a matter of appreciation.

We have always done $1 a person per day +$1. Not sure where I got that formula, but it has always been my norm, lol.

We always leave our tip in the bathroom on the little tray where toiletries are left. That way it's obvious it is for mouse keeping, and I always am ensured that my toiletries are replenished (often they will leave extra too).

We tip $1/pp each day so $3 and leave it under a post-it labeled Housekeeping and write a quick thank you. If I'm traveling solo (like non-Disney trip for work) I usually leave a couple bucks just because I feel weird only leaving a dollar.
