I haven't seen a thread yet for the parents of HS class of 2020. Somehow I have become the parent of a freshman and graduation is just a few years away.

Driver's permits, college applications and all things high school are all in sight.
Time went too fast!

Who else has a child who will graduate in 2020?

Me. The youngest of 4. But she's our only girl. Went homecoming dress shopping for the first time last night! That was a new but good experience!

$he's also our strongest athlete. So that's a different world, too.

I know how quickly these years go. And am not looking forward to it.

Have a senior, so his college planning is our primary focus right now right.

I have a DD too- she is having some uncomfortable moments with transition to the HS years. States she doesn't want to go to homecoming this year. Only a small group (about 10) of her friends go to her HS, most go to a neighboring HS so I think that has a lot to do with no homecoming dance this year. Mine is an athlete as well. Plays volleyball- hoping she will try for soccer as well just to get to know more people.

I really need time to slow down

Our dd is easy going so it caught me off guard that she had a rough first few days of high school. She was used to having lots of friends in each class. But had no friends in her classes. She had to make new friends. But with texting and group chat, she's keeping up with her friends, mostly nerdy type guys lol, and they're looking forward to hanging out at homecoming.

Our dd plays volleyball and soccer, too.

Mine has always had a lot of friends but kind of a homebody- so this isn't really out of character for her.

Have any of you signed up for raise.me dot com? The website where students can earn scholarships to certain colleges base on the grades they receive in HS.

My eldest just started HS so that would be me. I'm trying not to hyperventilate! Lol. High school has so far been a smooth transition at least. So far so good with his studies and he has joined a new club and has started his first paying job (reffing soccer).

Haven´t heard of that one.

What's worked best for our boys is maximizing their ACT scores. Oldest ds got a full ride scholarship and 2nd ds has paid minimal out of pocket so far in his 2nd year. 3rd ds has similar scores and is on a similar track as the other 2.

Any suggestions on how to do that?

They can take the ACT up to 12 times over their high school years. Ours took it with Duke Tips in 7th grade just to see what it was like.

They take it once in 9th and 10th grade to see where their scores are and to see what courses they need to focus on in school. Then a few more times in junior year and as needed in senior year.

There are study guides and practice tests on line. The kids orthodontist offers an ACT prep course for patients/former patients and the school offers opportunities to study and prepare. We've also got a few study books in the house.

Lots of talking and discussion about it here, too.

Here! DD14 is our 3rd kid to go through high school. She's very shy so this has been a harder transition than it was for her brothers. She's also not a great student so she's struggling all ready. It's going to be a long four years :)

My son(my baby!) is a freshman. My daughter is a junior. I'm actually excited to have him in high school. Just easier to have them in the same school.
He plays football, so it's also nice to have practices directly after school, instead of coming home after school, and going up to rec football practice from 5:45-8:30 every night. Much easier on the dinner schedule.

Playing football, they started practice in July, so he was comfortable at the school before he even started.
At BTS night, the gym teacher, who went to school with my husband, told us she does lunch duty in the gym, where my son eats lunch, and she said his tables are verrrry rowdy, but well behaved. Just a lot of energy. Whoops. I talked to him and told him he better keep the rowdy stuff to a minimum. My husband also went to school with the dean of discipline, and the principal was a few years ahead of him, as well.
There's only 1 lunch period here, so you don't get little groups of friends divided up into different lunch periods, there's like 30 of them who all sit together, even though in reality, my son tends to hang out with a smaller group of 8-10 boys.

I haven't even thought about SATs for him yet. They don't tend to take the ACT here.

My son is loud at home, while playing sports, and with his friends, and super shy all other times. I've told him, he's going to have to speak up in high school, discussions in class etc. so I really hope he steps up. That's my only concern as of now-he's in all honors courses, and is generally an excellent student, and happily, a self starter, so I expect him to do well.

Me! DS, our "baby," is a Freshman this year. He is in cross-country, but doesn't really like it. He is very smart, but we thought he needed some activities to round out his future college applications. We have two older DDs--one is a HS Junior and one is a college Freshman, so we have two in the Class of 2020!

Our son will graduate in 2020. We have a daughter class of 2018 and two younger daughters also. These four years are a whirlwind!

Yep, my youngest DS is a freshman he loves it so far, he is a baseball player, my middle DS is a senior and plays football so he is our focus this year with college applications. My oldest DS already graduated college. Its nice to have 2 in the same school again.

DS is class of 2020. DD just graduated (class of 2016), so now we have 2 freshmen; 1 college, 1 HS. She was much more focused on grades and he couldn't care less. :sad2:

I have a DD as a freshman HS this year while her older sister is a college freshman. The HS transition is going easier than the college one (older DD is so used to breezing through with straight A's-even the advanced and college level offered at high school-she is adjusting to "failing' by having B's so far). My HS freshman is classic middle child-and has to "outdo" her siblings. She is in band (as was older sister), but also Key club, French club, Science Olympiad, and Pay it forward(older kid didn't get that involved til junior year-and she could drive herself by that time!). Oh and swimming starts when band ends. She turns 14 in 3 weeks.

Also have one for class of 2024...:)

Funny because I remember thinking 4 years ago that graduation seemed so far away for my oldest. Blinked 4 times and the years flew by...

DD is a freshman also, and the transition for her is more difficult than I expected. She went to the same small Catholic school from Kindergarten until 8th grade. She is now in the Biomedical Research Academy at a public, all-magnet extraordinarily-good high school. It's not a huge school (for Miami), but it's about 1,800 students compared to the 600 in K-8 at her previous school.

It's been a bumpy transition -- partly because of athletics. She is a competitive figure skater and we have US Figure Skating regional championships in DC next week (don't get me started on THAT particular nightmare!). And to top it off, she is in the process of getting sick and will probably be sick until early next week. Once we get regionals behind us, we will downsize the skating dramatically on weekdays and that will relieve a lot of the pressure and leave time for school clubs and extracurriculars.

The other issue she's having is math, due to the pathetic math background she got in middle school. Coming from a private school to public, the kids had to take the Florida Algebra I end of course exam (Honors Alg I is an entrance requirement for her HS.) You have to get 13-15 questions right out of +/- 60 to pass the test. DD (NHS, Magna Cum Laude graduate) barely passed it; 1/3 of the kids from her Catholic school failed and are having to go through remediation and retesting. So math is a work in progress, but at least she's taking geometry where the logic of things will make it easier.

The faculty and staff at this school, however, are simply amazing. Unlike the "protect and promote the teachers' kids" environment at her previous school, this faculty seems to take an interest in every single student. These teachers are mostly nationally board-certified teachers -- not someone with three kids in parochial school working for a tuition discount. They're real teachers. The curriculum is all-Honors or AP classes, so she has 5 honors classes and AP World History. The work is intense, but having real teachers makes it doable. She currently has all A's and B's.

DW and I are both having the same "Where did my little girl go?" shock others have mentioned -- but onward and upward!
