Official Disney Cake Chatter - Part V!

Hi. First post. My daughter has a birthday coming up in January, and we have dinner reservations at CRT. I've been anxiously awaiting what my options are for a cake that night. Today, Disney finally got back with me regarding cakes at CRT post Dec 15th and thought I would share....

Thanks for sharing this info! If they sent you a photo of that new "signature dessert" it would be awesome if you could post it here!

Placed a cake order for January with Boardwalk Bakery. All our previous Disney cake orders were through Contemporary, and it was definitely different. For Boardwalk, I left a voice mail message yesterday and received a call back from BWI In-Room Dining today. I want to pick up the cake at the bakery rather than have it delivered, but the CM said she could still assist with the order. No e-mails, just over the phone, which involved some hold time.

Here's what we requested:
6" vanilla cake with red fondant
Princess Elena theme, but no images
Birthday greeting written on plate

So the positives: The CM I spoke with was super friendly. She heard the message regarding Elena and had already looked up an image (she seemed disappointed when I said no images!) Another huge positive is the cost - only $35!!!! It's $23 for the 6" cake and they will charge $12 extra for fondant. Great deal. I'll bring along an Elena cake topper in case it looks a little sparse, and leave it off if I like the cake "as is."

The not-so-positives: Lots of hold time on the phone. Almost 25 minutes to place the order, but it was all done at once rather than wait for e-mail responses. The CM initially told me I'd have to order an 8" cake for the fondant, but I shared that I've ordered 6" and mini cakes before with fondant and didn't need an 8" cake, so would skip the order if that was the case. She said she would check, and the bakery agreed to make the 6" with fondant. (Reminds me of when I called to extend one of my resort reservations and the CM initially said they probably do not have availability anymore since it's a busy weekend! But I said they are showing availability online, he checked, and they did.) She also kind of pushed me to have the cake delivered to our room, but I declined. Finally, I was a little concerned about not having the order in writing and I had to repeat parts of the order a few times.

In the end, I think it will be fine. The CM repeated the order back to me and everything was correct. I'll call back a few days before to confirm, but I'm optimistic!

I ordered a cake from The Contemporary to be served at the California Grill, we got married at the courthouse with just the kids in attendance and never got a wedding cake, figure this was the perfect opportunity to fix that. Red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, it was delicious and exactly what I asked for.

Wow - that's entirely adorable!!

We are back from our trip, and I wanted to share our cake pics. I ordered a 6 inch marble cake with vanilla frosting and chocolate buttercream filling. I asked for a whimsical holiday decor and suggested a fondant snowman, gifts, etc. with a Disney touch. We had it delivered to Jungle Navigation Co. Skipper Canteen for after our dinner. When the chef came to our table to discuss the kids' allergies, he almost let the cat out of the bag, but thankfully the kids weren't paying attention.

Since my 5 year old twins can't eat the cake, I baked allergy free cupcakes for them and brought them with us. The staff was super helpful in assisting me with finding a space to assemble them and they delivered them right alongside the cake. All three kids were crazy excited. We had a great meal with wonderful service and the cake was fabulous as well. It just really couldn't have been any more perfect.

The guests also really noticed it and were oohing and aahing over the cake. And it obviously left an impression because the next day a woman recognized us in another park as the family that had that lovely cake delivered to our table at the Skipper Canteen, lol.

Three of us had a slice and still had 3/4 of the cake left for treats the rest of the week. I had planned on putting it in a locker until we left the park, but I ended up carrying it around or pushing it in the stroller instead. It wasn't as big of a pain as I would have expected until we got to the bus with 2 sleeping children and a stroller to load with the crowd. Thankfully, someone offered their help and it made it back to our room in one piece.

So cute!!!

So interesting. I called the Boardwalk number again to order a second cake for our stay. As mentioned above, I just ordered a 6" cake with red fondant and a Princess Elena theme from the Boardwalk a few days ago. This time, I explained that I was interested in another 6" custom cake and the CM told me they could not do custom in anything smaller than 8". I told her that we already ordered a custom 6" for our stay, and she said those were limited circumstances. I let her know that if we can't do smaller than 6" for our second cake, we'd skip the order. She told me to have a magical day.

Oh brother! :sad2: Did you call Private Dining or the BoardWalk Bakery directly? I'd just call Private Dining again and hope you get someone different.

I have been emailing back and forth with a Special Events Coordinator at MK for my DD's birthday cake in January.
She has confirmed that
"unfortunately there will no longer be custom cakes available at the Magic Kingdom for the New Year"

So our choice is the 6" round or the larger Mickey Mouse one.

When I asked her about writing on the cake-
"My apologies but the cakes do not come personalized."

:(

What do I do?
1. Is there a way to have the Contemporary make a custom cake and deliver it to CRT?
2. Or do I just bring a small tube of icing and personalize it myself at the table?! :)

Thanks!

Update- I emailed my contact to ask about the Contemporary delivering a cake to CRT-

"Apologies but unfortunately they will not deliver as the Magic Kingdom no longer supports custom cakes. You are still welcome to bring in your own cake if you’d like from an outside source. I do apologize for the inconvenience, and please let me know if I can be of any further assistance!"

That's a bummer since I am not going to have time to leave- get over to the CR and back again.

I would just bring a tube of icing and personalize if you can't make it to pick up a cake elsewhere. They definitely won't personalize or deliver custom cakes to MK anymore. They made that clear when we did an order for last week. I assume you want it specifically for CRT but your other option would be to have it delivered to a restaurant/meal that isn't in MK or just to your room. That's our plan for future trips.

So now if I am at Cristal Palace, for example, and ask for a podium cake, can not they even write the name of the birthday boy at the moment of my request?
