High School Class of 2016/College Class 2020

Our DD is done next week on the 12th and will be heading home. DH and I are going down tomorrow to get most of her "big" stuff home. We will also be taking some of her stuff to goodwill. She and her roommate bought (used) some fancy headboards and desk hutches to use in their rooms this year. It is just not practical to bring them all the way home - about 450 miles - with the hope that they "might" sell them to someone to use next fall. Luckily we bought them used and didn't spend a fortune on them.

They also have a futon that we are going to try to get home though. I thing between her and older DD, one of them will be able to use in in their off-campus apartment next year.

We are hoping to not take a bunch of time because I know she will have lots of studying to do before finals (and I realize it's all the kids last weekend at school), but she has to be out by the 13th and next weekend just does not work for us to go down there.

This suggestion may reach you too late but have you thought about selling things she won't need next year now? DD20's large University has a very active Parent FB page and every year at this time it's flooded with photos and offers to sell dorm items that won't be needed by those who are moving into apartments the next Fall. It's so popular that if you want something you have to be the first commenter. We bought DD's loft kit that way and then at the end of Freshman year sold it for the same price we paid. The student/parent who wanted it met DD/DH as they were packing up.

Yeah definitely shop around on the car insurance! We were bundled with one company that gave us lower rates (house, car) but they decided not to do this anymore - is it bad that I don't know who we have? DH is the detail person on this LOL. I do know we get a pretty good discount because our extra driver is female, all A's, and we have AAA. We were going to drop the AAA but even if we only use it once it can be lifesaver-and with DD taking her car to Florida this fall it made sense to keep it.

AAA has been well worth the cost in DD's 3 years at school. They've met her on the Interstate at 11pm to change a flat. Towed her older car to a mechanic twice. Once when it wouldn't start and once when it was making a loud noise and without DH there to decide if it was OK to drive it to the mechanic she just got another tow.

Her old car was totaled in December and she now has a much newer car but we kept AAA anyway.

We've always had AAA. As a matter of fact, my father got it for me when I was first starting out, so it goes way back! I like having the security of knowing there is help available if someone gets stuck on the road, especially the kids, and even me who drives in the city, often at night or in the middle of the night.

Just an FYI, even if you missed paying the bill, if you run into a jam, you can pay the bill by credit card over the phone and you can still get service right then and there. Found that out the hard way one day.

There are so many other services AAA offers, too. :thumbsup2

I've had it since I was 17. Dd20 used up all of her service calls in April, but her membership was up for renewal in May, so she's good to go again. I've always made out ahead, we drive vehicles into the ground.

I got a strange text from DS this morning I answered with a question mark, like what is this. He said oops sent it to the wrong person. Turns out he was over at Harvard University looking at fossils for his anthropology class. He muttered complaints about having to do the assignment so I said hey, when will you ever get over to Harvard again, and he was like, "Hopefully never". :lmao:

My DH is traveling to NYC to bring DS home tomorrow. Finals are over, he had a great year and is most excited at his induction into Alpha Psi Omega, a national honorary theater fraternity. He became a history major earlier this semester, he did well in the business school but hated the classes and knows that work is not for him. He also learned he can't be in every production on campus and prepare as he should for classes. He got lucky and will still have almost all As, but he scared himself enough to know he has to rein it in. He has always been a big history fan, he even received a scholarship for having the highest average in history in his high school, so I think the move is a good fit. DS is all set to study abroad in Paris next Spring semester. He also casually announced he'll be spending his spring break in London. Apparently it's pretty awesome to be a college student these days! My spring breaks used to be spent cleaning out whatever thing was bugging my mom the most LOL

Well, I am already wishing my dd was back in school!!!! Her and her brother took a flying 8 hour drive last night to Kentucky to pick up her boyfriend. They drove there and drove right back. She thought she was just going to take off by herself. Thank goodness for older brothers with a couple of days off from work!! But she is smiling today having him back for a few days.

I think I'm a member of that fraternity! Lol! I was only involved in theater in college, but all of my children are very involved in theater/choirs. Ds19 pledged a professional law fraternity, he's a finance major.

Well, just like that, Freshman year is a wrap :) DD submitted her last paper just as I was getting up for work this morning. She had until Noon to submit it, but wanted to finish it first, then sleep (which I'm sure she is still doing). She finished moving out of the dorm last night. What a nightmare. :( Luckily she was the last one out because the other 3 girls left all their trash there for DD to deal with. So her Dad helped her throw it all away before the room inspection. I'm guessing if DD and her Dad didn't take it out, the other girls would have just left it there. What really surprised me was that DD's roommate's parents were there, and still let their child leave all her trash for DD to deal with :(

But at least she had the last say on the inspection of the common area (her side of her bedroom was completely clean but there were issues with the common area).

Well DD is home, and off to the HS graduation (several of her friends graduating this year)-sooooo glad to have the extra driver back (well, I've actually got 2 now with DDs friend here with us for the summer). And they took middle kid who has to play in band for graduation.
She made all A's (pretty sure-waiting on calculus final test grade to be put up-she only needed a 34% to get A), so she is pretty pleased with herself and her hard work. Couple weeks off then starts summer school and her friend is hoping to work FT.

Year seemed to drag at times then fly by!

Well, is it too early to stress about graduation??-My middle will be graduating HS in 2020 and if oldest stays on track so will she-and the graduations for both schools was on same night this year (2.5 hours apart).
Oldest graduation for her college has schedule only through 2019...Guess I will hope for a really really bad winter 2019-2020 so the HS graduation is delayed?

UGH! I'd be stressing about that too. I'll keep my fingers crossed that one or the other changes before then!

My son's college graduation changed this year from last year. I had hotel reservations made (some time ago) based on last year's schedule, and very late in the game realized they changed his major to the early ceremony instead of the late one. That changed which night we needed the hotel. I was really happy they were able to adjust our reservations. But then I guess some of the people expecting an early ceremony ended up in the late day one and had the inverse problem.

Checking in! How is the first summer going for the now college sophomores?
Mine is in summer school at local community college (physics and calc II) for 10 credit hours. And starts a part time job tonight. She has to make a little money back this summer for fall-as she bought different car. Her old car is fine for running around town, but we were all a bit uneasy with her taking it to DCP this fall. She found a really great deal on a Facebook ad, met the girl (DH went along) and the girl accepted her offer. 2009 Ford Escape in very very good condition (including new Michelin tires). DD then sold her old car at our garage sale (within an hour!).
Summer is flying by!

He took a quick summer class in the beginning of summer (marketing) and now works 2 jobs, usually 8 - 3 and then 4 - 9, then out with friends. I don't know how he does it.

I read the thread regularly, but realized I haven’t posted since last spring. With DD’s university on the quarter system, she’s only been home about 10 days now. She and boyfriend (dating since October) drove 15 hours straight from CO to central Texas. He stayed a few days to see the sights (San Antonio & Austin) then flew back to CO. He’s from IL and now a resident of CO, so the heat of central Texas was an enlightening experience for him. It’s been wonderful to see her mature and push herself out of her comfort zone. She tends to be reserved and very critical of herself with issues involving depression and anxiety. However, her university has been the perfect fit for her and has helped her really blossom. In fact, she joined a sorority this spring. I never thought that type of activity would interest her, but she said she wanted to get more involved with campus events and she thought this was a good way to do that and make new friends. As far as summer plans go, she starts a new job tomorrow at Schlitterbahn and is hoping to work as much as possible.

DD is working and taking a course this summer to lighten her load in the fall. She's also scheduling a slew of medical appointments she both fell behind with and needs for spring semester, like a series of shots and some blood tests. She worked really hard all year, especially with spring courses as she'd taken 18 credits, so she's also getting a little well-deserved R&R in the pool and with friends, which I'm glad to see. DS had a great sports season and is playing in a collegiate league out of state this summer. He seems so grown up now. He'll be changing his major as he didn't like some of the classes he was taking. It was also really hard keeping up with the demands of a sport while doing well in classes, but at least next year he'll know more what to expect. He was on the road on four different occasions this spring, trying to keep up with everything from hotel rooms, exhausted. So given that, overall he did pretty well. A lot of their friends are either changing majors or schools. I think that that first year is a lot about learning and making mistakes, figuring out what you like and dislike, meeting new people and finding where you fit in, etc. At any rate, I'm glad the first year is behind them. DS will have a month off before he starts school. He hopes to pick up some hours at his job (which he misses) and catch up with friends before he starts all over again. Even though he plays a spring sport, there's a lot that goes on in the fall with it as well. Anyone else here have a college athlete?

My DS was home for a week in mid May before he headed off to London to study abroad for six weeks. He landed in London the day before the Manchester attack, needless to say this has been nerve wracking for me.
But, he's living the dream and not letting any opportunity go to waste, so I'm happy for him.
He'll be home right before July 4. He recertified to lifeguard the week before London, so he'll dive right into work (no pun intended) when he gets over his jet lag.
My little Mr Procrastinator is already making plans on next summer for internship opportunities and how he intends to win them, so I'd say he matured a lot in his freshman year.
I just can't wait to have him home. I miss the messy house, the late nights and sleeping all day and eating me out of house and home. It will be nice to have that again for a few months.
With both of my boys out, I will say that empty nest syndrome sucks.

DD will be taking a summer class this summer and I don't think she should take a job given her health issues this year. I'm trying to figure out when to schedule sinus surgery for her but between the class and a possibility that she might need to go back to school early because she might be volunteering, I can't get enough recovery time. Also, I'll have to coordinate two college drop offs in late August. I'm stressing already.

oh gosh-:grouphug: to both!
I am finding it is hard with the first one letting go. And yet...I remember that age, we all survived...but it is sooo different being the parent vs the kid ready to take on the universe!

DD is working four days a week and taking a night course to get her phlebotomy certification two nights a week. So, she's busy; but, she has her weekends free, which is really nice. She will have to go to another city several hours away for a week to complete the externship portion of the course at a LabCorp facility. Then her exam, and she's certified. There are lots of facilities near her school; so, she's hoping to get some evenings and weekends as a phlebotomist during the next school year.

Her high school friends are all home, but they are all working and a couple are taking extra courses likes she is: so they've only gotten together two times since the summer started. We've had a lot of family events going on, and I know she's glad to be home for all of those weddings, graduations, landmark birthdays; plus a new baby and an engagement. She missed out on a lot of that during the school year since she was almost 5 hours away and didn't have a car. We're considering giving her a car this year which should make the job search easier, but she still may not be home often since she will be working there. :(

It's been so nice having her home. Even the little things like working together in the kitchen, and walking the dogs. It's going to stink when she disappears again this fall. But, I'm glad that she's thriving and happy and healthy and building her life/future.
