The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

None of the numbers from the new musicals impressed me, if I'm being honest. I gave them one minute to draw me in, then FFed through them all except for David Hyde Pierce. I've never seen Falsettos, but always felt I would like it, but the number they featured did nothing for me....and I love Andrew Rannells.

Yeah, I thought all the numbers were lackluster. Did they choose to perform the worst song from every nominated show?

Come From Away was the worst of the worst. I don't give a damn what the residents of Gander were doing when they heard that planes were being diverted there on 9/11. It wasn't all about THEM.

Ben Platt is as overrated as Hamilton.
I don't think the guy who played the lead in Dear Evan Hansen is overrated. I think he did the best with the material he was given. I think the material was weak and the show is completely overrated.

With Come From Away, I honestly think the opening number is the best song they could have used. The rest of the songs I really think you need the context of the location in the show to really get. I heard Me and the Sky without listening to the soundtrack and I didn't get it. Once I listened to the entire soundtrack, the song made much more sense.

RE: Dolly I read that the producers didn't want to restage any of the big numbers for the enormous Radio City stage, so they went wih David Hyde Pierce's before-the-curtain second act opener. Or at least that's the story they're sticking with...

I read somewhere that the producers of Hello Dolly offered to perform a number live on the stage of its home, the Shubert Theater, and have it telecast and piped into RCMH, but the Tony producers said no.

But maybe it's just the HD producers way of saying "You wanna see Bette perform? Buy a ticket. Sorry, no freebies."

I had read that they wanted her to do 1 of two numbers both of which involved the walkway around the orchestra. Since Radio City Music hall is so large it would have thrown off the timing of the numbers

We saw Beautiful Saturday night. Went into the city with two other couples and went to TKTS to see what was available. Thrilled to see it up there and was able to get six seats together, 4th row mezzanine. Loved it! Having gotten up with her music, it was quite nostalgic.

Just curious, did anyone else go see "Broadway Bares" last night, the benefit show of Broadway actors and actresses? DS was there, and said it was really good.

Is there kind of a down time for Broadway in the fall?

I'm thinking of going up NYC sometime in the fall and I want to see a lot of shows. So it'd be great if I could find tickets for a bit cheaper than usual.

Is there traditionally a time during the fall when less people travel there or see the shows?

I read that they named the principal players for the upcoming "Frozen". I don't remember the actors, but the music directors are from "Book of Mormon" and also "Kinky Boots".

Is anyone else going to the improv workshop taught by the Play That Goes Wrong Actors on Friday? I snagged one of the slots via an Audience Rewards redemption and I know they had 16 available. I've seen the show twice so far (once West End, once Broadway -- same cast both times) and the award includes a ticket to the evening performance so I guess I'll be seeing it a 3rd time.
I'm following it up with Great Comet, squeaking it in right before Josh Groban leaves the cast.

I was rooting for Come From Away last night. The show is absolutely incredible. Really a beautiful show. One of the few shows that really leaves you thinking and just a little bit changed after you see it. It's also by far the best directed ensemble show I have ever seen. Every move is deliberate and perfectly in sync with each other. I hope I can see it again sometime.

Overall I was meh about the show last night. Didn't love Kevin Spacey.

I was looking at this play for a trip in the fall that would include a 14 year old and older parents who are more on the conservative side of plays, nothing too explicit or risqué. I know a few songs show explicit...I do not like to listen to the soundtrack before the show so I was looking for reviews and could not find one a detailed one. Do think it is fairly conservative in the material?

The "explicit" songs usually have exactly one curse word in them. They are very mild, there is nothing sexual or violent in the songs or the show at all. But, the show is surrounding the events of 9/11 (they call it a 9/12 musical). It's uplifting, but there are definitely sad parts. It's not a "fun" show. (Side note, this is probably why I love it so much. My favorite shows are ones that really make you feel - Grey Gardens, Ragtime, Les Mis, etc.) Feel free to PM me if you want more specific info. What shoes do they like? I can tell you if it would be in line with those.

My daughter was in theater in school and the shows her group did was Les Mis, In the Heights, West Side, and Hairspray. My favorite was Les Mis by far, but my son really enjoyed In the Heights. We have seen several touring shows, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Wicked to name a few. We are already planning on Aladdin. My son likes plays that have a lot of dance, but he also LOVED Wicked. He wants to be a pilot and has talked a lot about 9/11 and he is a huge history buff, this is why I was thinking about Come From Afar. We talked about Wicked again, but not sure if we want to see it on this trip. We are looking for 2 shows other than Aladdin. He would love Hamilton, but the cost is a bit prohibitive!

Have you seen The Great Comet?

I haven't seen any of the other new shows besides Come From Away. I don't live in NYC anymore so I don't get to see as many as I'd like. But Come From Away is in my top 5 shows of all time now. I love it. It's not your traditional big musical. It's 12 actors on stage with tables and chairs, each actor playing at least 3 different roles.

Next on my list to see is Dear Evan Hansen, but I'm not a huge fan of teenage angst musicals so not sure if I'll love it. If you guys like Les Mis, have you thought about Miss Saigon? School of Rock, Anastasia, and Waitress would also be good. Chicago if you want good dancing as well.

I have not looked into Miss Saigon, but will check that out. Thank you for all of your help!

No problem! Miss Saigon is written by the same people who wrote Les Mis, another one of those epic 80s musicals. I do highly recommend Come From Away, I'm just not sure a young teenager would love it.

The boyfriend and I caught Hello, Dolly with Donna Murphy on Thursday night. The show was incredible from start to finish. Put On Your Sunday Clothes and the title number actually made me cry. I loved it so much that I turned around and went back to see it tonight (friday). It was just as incredible as the night before.

Saw Great Comet the other day. I was SO excited to see Ingrid Michaelson and she did not disappoint! I also loved the show- sad that I missed Josh Groban, but it was cool to see the show's creator playing the part! I want to see it again!
