Lose the Politics

If my knowledge and education from Law and Order: SVU is anything to go by (which I think we can ALL agree it IS) I'll always remember a line once said by one of the defense lawyers to the prosecutor:
"She may not agree with what I have to say, but she'll defend to the death my right to say it"

We don't necessarily have the "freedom of speech" thing here to the same degree as the US does (yes, it exists to a degree, but I don't think it's a prominent part of our constitution, I'd have to look that up, and I don't want to) but I believe the above quote is basically what @DisneyKevin was getting at.

And if that's getting political and offending people, I'm just not sure what anyone can do anymore?

Can someone be a "king" and "president" at the same time? :scratchin

#MakeAmericaDuffyFreeAgain

Well, I feel that if he is the king of llamas, that's

It gets tricky though, because freedom of speech doesn't mean you can say anything. There are laws about hate speech, for example.

I don't really care for what's her name. But I saw the image and I think it was all about shock value. Not to make a point- it was just to be offensive, and she should have known better. I'd think the same thing if the other side did it too. And they did all sorts of offensive things that would fall under hate speech laws. So the hypocritical outrage on both sides has me rolling my eyes, essentially. I don't care what party you belong to, that kind of thing is in poor taste.

I had a dear friend who was beheaded in a violent, graphic and quite frankly messy murder in front of coworkers and it was linked to the well publicized beheading by ISIS and others in the media just prior to her death. He was attempting to behead another victim when a good sarmaritain intervened. Talk of beheadings LEAD to beheadings. Kevin, I would be happy to provide you with the links where they showed the connection between the medias' report to my friend's murder.
That said, yeah, I defend free speech and artistic expression but Kevin, this is the strangest campaign you could champion. It's not artistic anything, it's terroristic in nature. I can think of alot better causes then KG right to do something gross and thoughtless and egg on more violence.
I can think of about 15,000 more worthwhile causes, something with homeless pets, gay rights, or the environment. Anything.

The Dis, where beheadings are simply artistic expression.

Who said that just because Kevin is defending this means he isn't championing for gay rights (you did listen to the Pulse episode right?!?!) or any other cause.
They're not mutually exclusive and it's absurd to imply it is.

I'm sorry about your friend, but if we all had to watch what we say for offending even one person who has had a horrific experience, no one would be able to say anything.

To think Kevin is championing beheading pictures or anything like that is beyond absurd and an intentional misinterpretation of what he's doing. He was defending free speech and pointing out hypocrisy.

There will always be things that are offensive to us. Universal, for instance, offends me to my very core but I just have to accept it.

Whoa whoa whoa... now you're going too far buddy!!
Universal is amazing!! (The parks, I couldn't even tell you what universal movies are outside of that)

Check the poster's history. I think it's pretty likely a sock puppet and not worth engaging. Just going to get the thread shut down.

Absolutely and you can't yell "FIRE!!!" in a crowded theater, etc. - there are limits to free speech

To the part of your statement I have boded - I very much agree that it has to go both ways ... either you think things being said on both sides are in poor taste and shouldn't be said, or you think both sides have the right to say things (and companies have the right to not employ them/stop being sponsors/etc

I just dislike it when people are ok with things said one way and then offended when a similar thing is said by the other side

What a mess. The post above was mine, I came back and logged into the wrong account. When I first join the Dis accidentally joined under my real name. I guess I logged into that one when I came back to try to explain myself.
Clearly my heartbreak makes me unfit for this thread. My heart is so broken and I am full of tears today for loss and hurt.
I apologize to anyone I have offended. These topics are too sensitive for me.
Kevin, a deep apology to you. I have lots of love but this topic is very difficult for me. Violence is too ugly for me right now. Excuse me while I take a break for a time. Mods feel free to delete the other account, I just could not ever figure out how.

Maybe it's just me but I'm confused. I have no idea what you are talking about. Take a Xanax and calm down.

We can disagree and be friends. Ask my friend Roger. :duck:We can argue about what time it is...but I still love him.

I realize you are close to this subject and it's hard to be objective.

That being said...I would hardly call this a campaign. I actually responded to something someone else (Corey??) said.

I would also take issue that talking about something create more of the same thing. When dealing with this terrorist situation...it may have. I have not heard of Kathy Griffin's tacky photos (and they were everywhere) leading to anything similar. To suggest otherwise is just hyperbole.

I believe in free speech and artistic expression. Sometimes, it's hard to defend..especially when you don't agree.

I think I am champion a great many thins.....LGBT rights, disability rights, environmental causes...you get the idea.

The thing that upsets me the most is the statement "The Dis, where beheadings are simply artistic expression." This is a bit mean and in word...ridiculous. I understand this is a subject close to you...but this is uncalled for.

This wasn't a beheading. It was a photo shoot.

Comparing the two doesn't work.

This is what I read this thread to say. You cannot be offended by Kathy Griffin's act, but have been okay with all the lynching signs and effigies of President Obama.

Personally, I find both to be disgusting and tasteless, but she had an equal right to express herself as those 8 years ago.

I tend to think the ones so offended NOW are so because someone they like or admire or whatever is the target. I think it was crass and foul then, and I think it is now.

Well said. I agree 100%

All of it was crass and ugly...but I still defend the right to say it.

And, while I defend the person's right to say it...I also defend the right to ignore it.

I'll save you the research Jes. No, Australians don't have a constitutional right to "Freedom of Speech", however, the High Court has determined that Australians enjoy a constitutionally protected right to "Freedom of Political Expression and Communication" - it's not in the text - it's in the vibe! :) (Insider Australian Joke) JCB if your interested the cases are Australian Capital Television v Commonwealth (1992), and Lange v Australian Broadcasting Corporation (1997).

I work in politics, anyone that thinks a show about Disney in the style of the roundtable could even avoid politics is dreaming; Disney World from the start has been deeply political - I think one of the most interesting corporate lobbying stories is the development of Walt Disney World - everything about the story interests me, from the creation of Reedy Creek, to the use of highway funding to build the roads.

Beyond that, Disney across its many divisions continue to be absolutely impacted by politics - and at the moment it has to be said, every US business that has any reliance on inbound international tourism is being impacted by politics too

One of the things I enjoy about the podcast is that it isnt just a travel show, it covers off not just how wonderful life in the parks are, but also a bit (and not alot) of the working of the company, labor relations at the parks and resorts, funding for tourism initiatives in Orlando.

Beyond that, forcing people to be political eunuchs because you dont share their opinion seems bizzare to me - politics is all about values and personal history, understanding peoples politics helps understand their world view - you might not agree with it, but it helps make other things about them make sense, t makes understanding their perspective easier.

As for Kathy Griffin, maybe it was in bad taste, more likely it was an omage to the painting of King Louis at the Guillotine, ie. The people take on the powerful - seems a bit odd to me that people who wandered about Washington impling revolution by saying the country needed a Tea Party, would be so upset by an image taken from the revolution that inspired your own.... Just sayin.

Thanks Matt.
I'm an accountant who works for a large Australian retailer, my year 12 legal studies subject only sticks so far ;-)

You need there to be a Law and Order: Sydney (or Melbourne).
Oh god, I can only imagine what that would be like (I don't really rate Australian tv shows, they're just plain bad for the most part, except the show "Love Child" which is brilliant)
