Do you have a television (cable, dish, etc.) service?

I think you mean eschewing. But yeah, I totally get it. My mother is one of those anti- TV people. I actually have yet to date a guy like that. Maybe because I haven't dated a true hipster for long. I'm all for other people being Vegans or vegetarians or pescatarians or organic only, as long as they don't attempt to make me see the light over my evil ways of steak and Oreos. That is strangely hard for the local species of hipster to refrain from. :sad2: I love veggies, and cows are cute, but cows also happen to be delicious. I actually had one guy tell me that I would change my mind if I visited a farm and met a live pig. No. No, I wouldn't. My cousin's ffa pigs were all smart, handsome beasties and they became really fabulous bacon.

Believe me, I've tried to work out the ceiling conundrum. The ceiling is the leading contender of space I can put it. It would be dead over the couch, and I would be totally ok with laying flat on my back to watch. But I have yet to work out how to secure it properly. It needs to be secure enough that I don't worry about it braining me, and look good enough that my landlord won't come up with a reason to outlaw the tv ceiling solution. My neighbors are largely college kids and I think he gives me a lot of slack because I'm not one of them. I mean he'll judge me if I do it, but he won't make me take it down if I do it well.

My friends who live in the suburbs or in Idaho don't have this kind of dilemma. They moan about closet size and bathroom number while I'm just wishing I had actual closets and normal sized cupboards.:lmao:why am I still here??

Oh. Right. Because there is actual stuff to do that doesn't involve driving or crap roadside bars. NOW I remember...:rolleyes1

Yep - totally right on the word, that isn't even a word. IDK.

Fresh from the farm bacon, is the BEST bacon. Yeah, I love fair trade coffee - and irish whisky, and kettle chips, and locally sourced produce, AND hot chicken, ie, fast food. Its weird, but I like what I like. I find people who aren't cool with my laissez-faire attitude about such things. And god, people have opinions about TV...to the point that I'm obviously defensive about it. They're probably going to kick me out of here soon because I don't own any vinyl or ANY physical music anymore and have vastly reduced my books.

I hope you can make it work. I think if you did, you'd have won urban living. Ceiling TV could be the BEST TV.

I have a huge closet, and a spare walkin in my master, AND I can walk to pretty much everything I want, but its a small bit of the city. A lot of Nashville is not for me. You should see our "judgmental map" - its SO spot on. I can walk to the farmer's market and the organic produce place and the butcher, OTOH, if I need just normal groceries like once a month I have to go the "murder Kroger." I live in one of the most expensive areas of town...so, its still a mixed bag.

I had to google judgemental maps. Now I can't stop laughing. Loved the Nashville one. But the Seattle one is the crowning glory- my favorite bits are "bertha may be here, we aren't sure and neither are you". "Slightly panicked about gentrification", "Yes, Seattle has black people" And "Bellevue wasn't white enough". Spot on!

I don't get the book snobbery either. And I am a book nut. But the only bits of my collection that are still in physical form is stuff that doesn't get put out as ebooks- coffee table art books, poetry, a lot of scholarly history, stuff that went out of print decades ago like some of my mystery novels. Over on another forum I follow, a bunch of people were bashing a poster for worrying over the electronics ban. I mean some really nasty comments about how that poster could give up watching tv and learn to read. But come on. I'm worried about the ban because if it happens I'll have to pack a backpack of books like I did before the ereader (best invention ever, I swear).

And I still haven't figured out why people would rather have a box of cassettes or records or cds rather than just one cell phone and portable speaker. I mean. Come on. Kesha cannot possibly sound better when played on a CD player rather than iTunes.

We have Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Sling. We are very happy. We've been cable free as a couple for about 3 years. My husband was cable free before he met me for all of his life, haha. I'm a HUGE sports fan but that's pretty much it, so after learning about Sling, I quickly cut the cord. I don't miss anything. I've got the Sports package for $5 more and I see all the big NFL and NBA games, plus tennis matches.

Before I learned about the various ways to cord cut, I was one of those people spending $100+ a month on cable to watch 4-5 channels. I tried both cable and satellite too, in an effort to gain better value. After the initial, introductory prices, the value that was there, completely disappeared. I'm beyond thrilled with our TV setup now. I do not miss cable at all.

We just disconnected from Spectrum - formerly Time Warner - and now have Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu. We are going to see if we miss having cable. What do you have? Are you happy with it? Are you contemplating making changes?

We have cable (Comcast) and hate it. But...it's the best option here. We tried Dish and couldn't get a signal most of the time.
Once AT&T gets it together and gets their Fiber here (or Google fiber), we want to switch, at least for internet.

We also use Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Netflix.

We have Verizon Fios, Netflix and Hulu. We also have four boxes with HD and DVR. And we still put into retirement and go on vacation.

I love my Law and Order SVU marathon reruns and my son and SO would die without the sports channels. NFL Red Zone stays on our tv every football Sunday from 12-8. I also have HBO and Starz (we specifically have Starz to watch Power!).I like to watch my shows as they come out.

We actually like Comcast but switched because when my last contract was up the rep wouldn't find me another promotion like they've always been able to do. I had Fios come in and then Comcast threw a fit and begged me to come back but Fios had already been installed. I think I just had a bad rep because the rep who took my actual cancellation call a few days later was super nice and had a promotion for me. When the Fios contract is up I'm going back to Comcast IF they can get me a good deal which I think they will.

We went without cable for many years (10, to be exact) and just had Netflix and the internet. About 9 months ago I said enough is enough and now we have cable again, and I LOVE it. We don't really watch TV at all but I love sports (particularly hockey and football) and I was just tired of not ever being able to see sports on TV. This season I was able to watch all the hockey I wanted and it was great!

And yes, I know it's an expense, and I could save money without it. I choose to spend my money on it.

My DH and I were discussing this issue over the weekend - our bundle which includes the house phone, internet and DirectTV is $350 a month and I am sick of it. We are starting to explore options - his issue is sports and mine is local/national news

We cut the cord a few years ago & do not regret it one bit.

My advice to you: Get Sling TV. Packages start at $20/month, it's Live TV. Less channels than classic cable, but you can choose from different packages, no contract or commitment. You can try it 7 days free at: https://www.sling.com

Currently have the Direct TV app $35/mo, Amazon Prime and Netflix. I used to have Sling and am considering switching back because there were less glitches and lag.

Playstation Vue with Netflix and Hulu.

Used the antenna method for a little over 2 years but we were just in range of a tower so never got the most consistent reception.

Cable TV and internet through Comcast. No premium channels like HBO. I'm not sure which tier of service I have, something mid-range. I also have no idea what it costs; the monthly charge is automatically debited from my bank account.

I looked it up on my last on-line bank statement. $128 per month.

That's crazy expensive. We pay $190 a month for Verizon Fios with 4 HD/DVR boxes, home phone and internet. We usually pay around the same with Comcast too.

We have had DirecTV for several years, and happy with it for the most part, except the cost going up every year. Right now we're paying $135/month.

We also have Netflix (1 DVD out at a time, plus streaming) and Amazon Prime.

We've thought about ditching the DirecTV but there are channels we would miss so we haven't.

Currently have DirecTV, Amazon Prime, Netflix (keep the streaming all year, and for the summer have 2 Blu-rays out at a time).

Once my DirecTV contract is up (a year left on it) I am getting rid of it. Right now the price is $102 per month with the discount I have (without it the price would be $142). Thankfully where I live I can pick up the locals with an antenna (growing up my parents is a dead zone) and that is what I will be switching to with a TiVo and keeping Prime and Netflix streaming.

I flipping love this whole post. All of it...

Nashvilles "judgmental map" is so spot on its crazy. I live in the "trust fund hipster" area, but the one close to hit chicken and beverage choices...because Nashville has 2 areas like that, which is the truth! Those maps are awesome!

We have DirecTV - we've switched providers about every 4-5 years - we actually started with DirecTV back in 2003 and went through Dish Network, AT&T UVerse and one other (I think?) since then. We also have Netflix and Amazon Prime.

We always talk about dropping some of these, but I like having satellite/cable TV. We did drop all our premium movie channels, as we found ourselves watching more of our movies off Netflix or Amazon.

I have Comcast. The package I have was received same way as many other pp did... calling to cancel cable portion and they offered me a decent package instead.

$81/month, contract for 2 years:

Digital Economy
HBO
Blast Internet

I have to have fast internet because I work from home, and this was less than internet alone.

I also use Netflix, Amazon and Hulu.

I am fortunate to live in an area where Comcast customer service is pretty decent. Phone support is good and they show up quickly if there is an issue. Very little outages, mostly weather related.

We have the most basic Spectrum, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Sling. Sling drives me batty.
