Official Dopey 2018 Thread

I have a flight out on December 23rd but no flight home... guess that means I'm staying in WDW right?

We're actually waiting for the last bit of miles to be added to my account so we can book his flight. I wanted to do them at the same time so I am certain that we're on the same flight, even though we won't be sitting together. (First class for me!)

This is where things go haywire with my plans, too. I don't have a trip home, yet, as Southwest still has to release flights for January 8 and beyond. We're leaving the 8th, so I still have no home ticket.

They open up June 22nd (this upcoming Thursday)

Bumping my last response.

I posted this on the Marathon Weekend thread, but for those of you who may not read that thread: Tomorrow (Thursday, June 22, 2017), Southwest Airlines will open up fares for January 8 and beyond, so if you were planning on using Southwest for your trip in and out of Walt Disney World, and was not planning on leaving the night of the marathon, you can finally book your trip home tomorrow.

Now if you are planning on staying 2 months after the marathon, well, you got way more money than me, and you don't need my assistance in getting you home :D

Thankfully the return flights are MUCH cheaper than the flight to get there for me. Flights, and vacation package are now booked so I guess I should start planning the ADRs... oh and training.

SW changed the flights leaving Orlando. Up until yesterday's data dump, there were 5 flights leaving from MCO to PHL. Starting the day after the marathon, there's now 2.

Bah!

How do you feel after finishing Dopey, and do you have any energy, or willpower, left to actually do anything?

Both times I did Dopey on Sunday afternoon I was STARVING. As in I could eat everything in the world. In 2015 I had dinner at POP Century and then rode the People Mover 1001 times (riding that moving platform backwards felt heavenly on my calves). In 2016 I had dinner at California Grill. I went to bed after that, but watched fireworks first.

Well I was a Grumpy not official Dopey since the half was cancelled this year. After the marathon I actually felt great. Sure I was a bit sore and after sitting on the bus back to the resort that was not fun. I really felt good though then walking around the parks soon after the marathon.

This. I would totally recommend walking the parks or resort as soon after the marathon as possible.

After the last Dopey, this was my method and it was the best I've ever felt after a marathon:
1. Protein in coconut water directly after.
2. Beer from one of the stands.
3. Epsom salt bath followed by ice bath.
4. Walked resort (OKW)
5. Dinner at California Grill
6. Fireworks

I was up at 6am the next morning.

:dancer:

That's how I tend to look after all four of my previous Dopey marathons. And yes even in 2017 when I set PRs at 5k, 10k, and the marathon.

How to do it? Make the training as tough as what the race will require. Does this mean race 48.6 miles in training? No, it means that after your long run on the weekend (or any run really) - Don't hit up the couch. Go shopping (or something similar). Just make your run a normal routine, not the sole focus. Also, train smarter not harder!

When I added up my Disney trip steps it wasn't really an abnormal week for me (that's even with doing some significant park time). So keep moving in training, and then post-Dopey just keep moving.

This year was my first Dopey - I did the half on my own, so unofficial, but still the same mileage situation. Immediately after the full, I was wiped: blood sugar was way low and I had a hard time stabilizing it. I spent a few hours eating frequently, taking a long, hot bath, and dozing on and off in bed. By late afternoon, I felt MUCH better and was ready to hit the MK for the evening. I wasn't very sore; more stiff and tight than anything, especially in that frigid air!

Yea, I grabbed flights back a couple days ago, from Columbus to MCO for 69 bucks each! I've not been lucky enough to get those prices when they have sales. Now, down on the 2nd... Well, I grabbed some for 150 each today since they went up 30 bucks in a couple days.. And wife will be so happy that flight leaves at 5AM... NOT!!! There is a noon flight, but about $50 more each.. will keep an eye out and see if they drop any, but at least, right now, we are booked, both ways..

I had to pay $199 on the way down (which has since went even higher) and got a flight for $96 on the way home.

Definitely keep watching those SW flights! I booked in March for our September trip and kept an eye on the website daily. After 3 changes (2 were actually just price drops, not flight changes...the other involved picking a better time for us at a better price), I now have $500+ in flight credit off of the originally $1250ish (5 ppl from BWI to MCO). Good luck!

I've only done Dopey once in 2016 and straight after the marathon I necked a can of coke. Had a slice of pizza, a hot bath and watched 30 mins of Hercules and was absolutely fine. Spent the evening at Springs celebrating in Paadlefish and stayed up til about 11pm. My flight back to the uk was the next day and I felt fine, no leg pain or anything. Calling it beginners luck, no doubt I'll be crippled this time round!

After both Dopeys, I've gone straight to the beer truck. This year, @FFigawi and I had beers, enjoyed the sunshine and were some of the VERY last people to leave the finishing area.

Shower at the hotel, and then back into Epcot for margaritas, rides, etc.

I don't nap because when I do, I'm usually out for 2+ hours and feel worse than I do if I just keep going.

We also did hot tub time after Epcot closed on Sunday night and that was awesome.

My girl has a question about the Dopey training guide.

It says to run 45 minutes. Does that mean go all out for 45, or just be able to run at any pace (or even slower) for 45?

She is running her normal pace, and says she can really only do 30.

You most definitely don't want to go all out for 45 min for the maintenance weekly runs. So, she can choose any run/walk pace she'd like to do for the maintenance runs, but you probably don't want to exceed marathon goal pace (unless it's done strategically). Even more important will be those long runs which need to be done at 2 min slower than goal marathon pace (justified by a recent race equivalency calculation of course). I know it may seem strange to do 2 min slower than goal pace for the long run, but it's critical it's no faster than that for the Galloway plan. Any faster and it really starts to infringe on the benefit/fatigue barrier.

She is running her normal pace, and says she can really only do 30.

As in, she only has time to run 30 min on Tues and Thurs? Or the pace she has been doing (normal pace) can only be kept up for 30 min?

Now, if she doesn't use run/walk then that may completely changes the game on how to interpret the runDisney Galloway Dopey plan and the appropriate pacing for different days.

It's her normal pace for the maintenance runs. She's running at her 5k pace and can't run it for more than the 5k... I keep telling her to slow down, but she won't.
