Is it ethical for me to visit Russia?

its part of your heritage, your family history and shaped who you are as a person. IMO its very wrong to just wipe out that part of who you are.

Russia is an amazing country with a very diverse history and culture. Would you boycott a production of Swan Lake or The Nutcracker by the New York Ballet as they were written by a Russian - Tchaikovsky?

Would you have walked out of the gymnastic competition at the Rio Olympic Games in 2016 when the Russian team came on ( and very likely have missed the performances of the USA team)

What if War and Peace was on the school / college reading list, would you ban your kids from reading it cos it was written by a Russian- Tolstoy?

My mum and her friend went on a tour of Russia this summer. They had an amazing time, they visited St Petersberg and Moscow, went on a bullet train and so much more. Like any foreign travel, as long as you research, stay in tourist areas, behave respectfully and dont commit any crime, then its just the same as going to London for example. My mum and her friend did a package tour, flights, visas, hotels, transport etc were all arranged for them. They said there was a great mix of ages and people on the tour with them.

Experiencing a different culture, seeing what its actually like is a very worthwhile life experience. Yes there are things which to us in Europe and USA we dont like or understand BUT the same could be said for USA. A lot of people think USA is 'backward' on human rights, mistreatment of LGBT, gangs, ethnic minorities, gun laws etc etc.

I was about to say, have you been to the US nowadays? If you start to think about it you can scratch a lot of countries in Asia, Middle East and Africa of your list.

If I look at my own country now, the big news story now is about a girl being killed (most likely) by a convicted rapist/murderer who could walk in and out of his treatment center after spending only a few years in prison. That is as backward as you can get, the predator's rights to a new life is seen more important than of those who he has ruined. And then we are supposed to be a civilized country. Maybe too civilized?

Go to Russia, it is part of who you are. It has an amazing cultural history I would love to explore.
Even if you live in a 'backward' country, it doesn't mean you agree with what is happening.

I just heard someone on the show say they won't visit Russia because they are (i.e. Russians) homophobe.I am a big supporter of LGBT community.

You are from Australia, right? Google your own country and homophobia and you will see tons of articles regarding same sex marriage, which is still not allowed in Australia, and many opinions of homophobes and their propaganda against the issue. On this topic, yes Australia might do better than Russia, but could be seen as backwards in comparison to other Western societies.

You say someone on a show wouldn't go, this isn't about that person, this is about you. Is there some other reason why you don't want to visit your fatherland and you are looking for an ethical/polite excuse not to go?

If this is your only issue and you have many friends who are LHBT, ask for their opinion. If they say they will never speak to you again if you visit your fatherland, then you have to think what is more important: your friendship or part of who you are?

But if they say that it wouldn't change their opinion about who you are, because they know you and know you do not share the opinions of many Russians, the question remains: Do you want to go to Russia?

there seems to be some underlying prejudice and hesitation about Russia? Im getting the feeling that being Russian may be seen as something shameful and secretive and hidden in your family or not talked about outside the family? You seem to be influenced alot by what people say, but at the same time have a natural curiosity about where your father came from.

I saw and replied to your other thread asking about people travelling over seas.

Honestly, to me you seem too immature and low in confidence to undertake like this right now. Wait a few years, grow as person, wait until you have more confidence in your decisions and are not as reliant on other peoples opinions and views.

You seem to be looking for validation of the negative views about Russia you have experienced to give you an excuse to not go. Those of us who have replied to you here on Dis do not share those negative views and you seem to be getting frustrated and are now even more confused.

I wish you all the best, and hopefully one day you will get to Russia and have an amazing experience which will enrich your life :)

I understand exactly where you are coming from about Russia.... still, if I were feel pulled to go there because of my heritage, I'd consider it.
