This Bridge is Old, Like You! - A July 2017 and April 2018 TR *Completed + New TR Link Posted

Just what you needed, more stuff to carry around! I'm glad you were able to get on Pirates though before heading out of the park!

The photo of the kids watching tv is so cute!

Haha I love that Evie was having fun with the stickers!

See- now when I am so behind, I can both anticipate your trip to Ireland and read about it in the same morning!

:shamrock:

Oh, wow, what a mixed bag reaction on Peter Pan. I love that Landon was so excited recognizing beloved characters and settings.

Sorry to hear about Evie's reaction. Rough morning for her, but glad to hear she was able to take a little recharging snooze.

What a great meet with Peter.

I share your love, and Landon's of Big Thunder. My favorite ride at Disney. Glad the experience was wonderful.

No words at your lunchtime exposure. WOW!!!

I'm glad you could find the humour- all you can do is laugh in that situation and take comfort that you don't know any of those people who were watching (or trying not to)

That is a sweet picture of you Facetiming with Alex.

I am so glad I found your report this morning because it served as an enjoyable distraction today

:goodvibes

I'm guessing you really didn't need to be carrying around extra weight in the summer heat ... oh well. At least you got some Starbucks after.

Evie certainly seems to be having fun with those stickers. I hope you didn't have too much trouble getting them off!

Awww, Landon on Big Thunder is just so sweet! You can see the pure joy on both of your faces.

Oh man, what a lunch!!! :rotfl2: At least it's WDW and you'll never see those people again. lol

All caught up again. I love the photo of you with Evie in the baby carrier though I can't begin to imagine hot hot and heavy that was for you :sunny::scared1:
Glad you wee able to catch up with Alex - modern technology is awesome -and at least he was able to share in your day. It must be rough on both of you being apart when you really just want to be together

Back on the DIS and trying catch up after a very long trip(s) away. All caught up though and made it through your last 2 updates laughing at your shorts antics. That happened to my daughter on our last family trip in the Coral Reef and while she was mortified, we all laughed our brains out. All in good fun, ya know. ;)

Pecos Bill's is passable. Nothing extraordinary, but fills the bill in a pinch. When they took away the fake cheese sauce they messed the whole thing up. :(

Yes, Disney solo with little kids in tow is not for the meek- you did it marvelously though! Kudos, Mama!!

All caught up again and loving the report! I can relate to so much, though thankfully not the shorts incident! :rotfl:

So glad that Landon loved Big Thunder and it sounds like, once she gets over her fears, Evie might be your thrill-ride buddy as well!

The never-ending struggle in the summer!!

Wow! You're a tough cookie! But absolutely worth it to be at WDW, I'm sure.

:rotfl2: Good choice!

Sneaky girl! I like that you've kept all your Disney stickers though. :)

I love our little Disney sticker collection. I didn't do it at first, but then Landon started getting some really unique ones and I couldn't bring myself to throw them out! (Landon doesn't ever really wear stickers.) I think I'll be a little sad when the time comes that the kids are too old to get stickers...

Just arrived and will be spending this morning getting caught up.

What a fantastic introduction!

I can understand why this picture is a favorite. As always, I want to extend thanks to your family for your sacrifices.

Can't wait to read all about your adventures. You have such a great, honest, fascinating way of sharing the details of your trips.

:goodvibes

Thank you for both the compliment and the for the military appreciation.
I like to include all aspects of our trips into my reports. What fun would re-reading them in the future be if I didn't talk about the kids keeping us up all night or losing important documents. But I like to think I do it in such a way that's lighthearted. Even when I was sick as a dog at Pop Century, I found the humor in the situation.

Very impressed with your travel day, especially your attitude. You encountered a few moments of difficulty, but it sounds like you faced them without too many headaches.

You have some great info and tips for people traveling internationally with little ones.

Wait, what?!?

I haven't read comments, so I don't know if you have explained the lion spraying story. Wow! Um, exactly how close do you get to the lions?

Awwww on the picture of Evie with the goat.

Congrats to Alex on his promotion!!!

Hopefully I helped someone overcome their fears about traveling internationally with two little kids. Honestly, all the prep work and organization required beforehand was the hardest part. Once we were actually traveling it was pretty standard.

I found this old picture to give you an idea of the lion enclosure. There was basically two chain linked fences separating us, so when the lion turned around and sprayed...no barrier to protect poor Evie.

My mother's poor cat FREAKED when we brought Evie home...

Thank you. The selfish wife part of me is so relieved we don't have to go through months and months of studying and then anxiety over the actual test. Feb. through May is never a fun time for a spouse when it's the active duty's year to test!

I love reading about Shades of Green since I don't have any direct experience with that resort.

I try to include some photos of Shades whenever we stay there, because I know it's not a resort everyone gets to see. Since the rooms are so big, I have no doubt Alex and I will continue to stay at Shades in the future.

Too funny that Evie loved the teacups and Dumbo, but Little Mermaid, not so much. Poor thing! It IS awfully dark in there.

(For my son Ben, it was the stretching room in the Haunted Mansion that scared him. The ride was ok, but I don't think he liked the other guests who would recite the monologue in the room and then scream when the lights went out. For a couple of years we had to ask to skip the stretching room)

The interaction with Ariel in her grotto is priceless.

:goodvibes

I felt terrible that I didn't even stop and think about whether or not Evie would get scared on the ride. I went into the trip thinking about Landon's reactions, which was a mistake on my part. The two are completely different in their likes and dislikes.

I can definitely see the stretching room being scary! That's a legitimately fearful place for a kid. I haven't even braved that one with my kiddos yet. Although, that's Landon's best friend's favorite Disney attraction. So of course now he insists he can ride it next time we're in Disney.
"But Mom, Emma gets to go on it." *sigh*

Just what you needed, more stuff to carry around! I'm glad you were able to get on Pirates though before heading out of the park!

The photo of the kids watching tv is so cute!

Haha I love that Evie was having fun with the stickers!

I was really happy we got to ride Pirates that day, because that was the only time we did it on this trip! It would have been sad to miss such a classic.

I think Evie was more excited about the Disney Jr. channel than any other thing that day!

See- now when I am so behind, I can both anticipate your trip to Ireland and read about it in the same morning!

I was so happy Landon loved Thunder Mountain. He's my little Disney buddy; I needed him to like my favorite coaster!

I'll never forget when I went to Disney when Alex was deployed in 2014 and I FaceTimed him from Disney's Hollywood Studios. I was at the entrance and the CM at the tapstiles said hello to him. I explained our situation and the CM proceeded to wish Alex the best and had a brief conversation. It was a touch of Disney magic for Alex, and while that didn't happen this time around, it was still nice to talk to him in the room.

I'm guessing you really didn't need to be carrying around extra weight in the summer heat ... oh well. At least you got some Starbucks after.

Evie certainly seems to be having fun with those stickers. I hope you didn't have too much trouble getting them off!

Haha, she did have fun playing with the stickers. Landon's my silly kid and never wants to put the stickers on anything, so it was fun seeing a kid use the stickers as intended.

Awww, Landon on Big Thunder is just so sweet! You can see the pure joy on both of your faces.

Oh man, what a lunch!!! :rotfl2: At least it's WDW and you'll never see those people again. lol

I was so glad Landon had FINALLY reached 40 inches and could start experiencing some new rides. It was like he hit a Disney milestone!

I can't imagine how generations before me handled deployments. I remember when I was a kid my dad had to go to Korea for a year and all they had was a short phone call once a week. I'm so fortunate to be able to pick up my phone and video chat with Alex when I needed...

You've been on a whirlwind adventure, doing much more important things than hanging around on the DIS! But all the same, thank you for reading my updates.
I did recall your daughter's Coral Reef moment while I was writing that update. Took comfort in knowing I wasn't the first to embarrass myself in a Disney restaurant.

I'm pretty sure if I ever hear someone say Disney is just for kids in my presence I won't be able to stop myself from launching into a tangent about how much I'd RATHER do Disney without kids. :rotfl2:

All caught up again and loving the report! I can relate to so much, though thankfully not the shorts incident! :rotfl:

I think Evie is going to love coasters as she gets older! She's definitely our thrill junkie.

I could be wrong, but I'm sure Landon and Izzy are like two peas in a pod. All of Landon's good friends are very outgoing and spunky like him, so I'm sure those two are going to hit it off immediately next June!

July 21st, Part 6:

Dinner for my family this night was at Garden Grill. This was my third attempt eating at the restaurant; twice in 2016 I had booked it and had to subsequently cancel the reservation. Typically, when I try new dining locations with my mom I choose places Alex has little interest in. He’s not an adventurous eater so places like Boma or Skipper Canteen are better left for trips with my mom. Obviously, Garden Grill doesn’t fall into this category, and I felt a little guilty eating at a new place Alex was interested in, but my good friend here in Germany told me I had to book this dinner.

She’s a big Disney fan like me. (Her family is headed to Orlando in January and staying at POR for 6 nights. If I wasn’t responsible for her dog during their trip I would have already figured out a way to stow away in her luggage.) And she has told me on multiple occasions that Garden Grill is her favorite restaurant at Disney.

Kind of hard to ignore a rave review like that.

So I (guiltily) booked a meal here.

In order to get to Epcot, my mom and I had to take the kids on the Shades bus to the TTC where we stood in a short line to get through bag check. Then made our way towards the Epcot monorail station. The storm that had blown through while we were hanging out in our room had passed and while the ground was wet and the air super muggy, the sun had returned which meant I was a happy camper.

Actually, everyone was in a pretty good mood.

01.JPG

02.JPG

Landon was excited to see which color monorail we would board this time. I had read dozens of trip reports while Landon was still a baby, enough to know that there’s some deep rooted love between boys and the monorail system, but I hadn’t realized how instantaneous and unexplainable it was. My kid simply saw this moving train in the sky and BOOM! Infatuated from the start…

Oh, and look you guys! Take a peek at who else was smiling:
03.JPG

There’s my Evie girl. I’m glad I had some proof to show that my daughter wasn’t completely miserable the entire day. A few hours of decompression in the room had done her wonders.

Sometimes, I take pictures with a specific goal in mind, and I’m sure that was the case with this:

But heck if I remember what that goal was now! Perhaps I was timing the trip to see how long it took us to reach the parks from the TTC, but if that were the case I failed miserably at my mission because I don’t have an end time recorded anywhere. I guess now’s a good time to mention that my favorite feature ever on my watch are the two time zone displays. Here at home I have the bottom time set to my parent’s house so I know whether or not I can bother them without fear of waking them. On this trip I switched it to the time at my house so I didn’t pull that same stunt on my friends. They wouldn’t have appreciated a hello from me at eleven o’clock at night…

Okay, moving on.

My mom and I got quite the surprise when we disembarked the monorail and realized we had to go through bag check again. Talk about the most asinine system ever. I get the logistics of it. There’s no way to separate monorail guests from vehicle guests, but it was still an inconvenience to go through the process two times. Especially when you’re toting around a backpack with enough provisions to tide two toddlers over for a couple hours, pushing a stroller, and packing waters and ponchos for the group.

Anyone know if this is something they are fixing with all the new changes coming to Future World? Because, you know, a Guardians of the Galaxy coaster is all fine and dandy but so would a separated monorail entrance.

I’m just sayin’ Disney…

At the front of the park, I made my family stop so we could take a couple photos in front of Spaceship Earth.

04.JPG

05.JPG

06.JPG

07.JPG

Then we continued on towards the Land pavilion. Any parent with little kids knows the struggle it is to get inside that building. First, you have to walk half a mile off to the right to park your stroller in the uncovered lot where you are reminded that strollers only come in about four different colors. And as your telling your kid to hop out (because the seat that’s normally a prison suddenly becomes their beloved lounge chair) you’re also memorizing every imperfection on the body of your stroller in the hopes that you’ll be able to easily identify the thing hours later. Meanwhile, your other kid imagines you’re doing something wonderful and they're missing out.

Like you’re giving out candy to the other child or striking up a casual conversation with Donald Duck.

Meaning, they’ve got to break free of the adult that has stayed back and race towards you.

Case and point:
08.JPG

And when they realize nothing spectacular is happening, they become sullen and whine about having to walk all the way back.

All while the other kid screams and refuses to walk because they were sitting and sitting is what they want to continue to do.

So you – the amazing and patient parent you are – throw the younger tot on your hip and drag the older kiddo behind as you climb the thousand foot incline to the Land’s entrance.

By the time you get through those sliding doors you just want to sit down and take a siesta.

I get it fellow parents. I really do.

You go ahead and get the margarita from the Mexican pavilion. You hide Germany’s caramel brownie from grubby little hands. No judgement over here. You battled the Land’s entrance.

You deserve the reward.

Once inside, I walked us clockwise around the circle. What a poor decision. Everyone was looking at us with the most incredulous looks.

YOU’RE BREAKING THE UNSPOKEN SIDEWALK RULES! ALWAYS START TO THE RIGHT. ALWAYS!

By about the eighth shoulder nudge I realized my mom and I should have taken the long route and circled around to the Garden Grill entrance. Poor Landon almost got taken out once by a guy that was too busy looking at his phone to notice where he was walking.

I know you have to get that 4th Fastpass for Journey into Imagination, good sir, but don’t trample my son in the process. I need him to wheel me around the parks when I get too old to walk…

I checked us into the restaurant, where we had about a ten minute wait before being seated. Our hostess walked us to the second level and deposited us at a four topper facing the Living with the Land attraction. Unfortunately, the restaurant did not rotate while we were there, but at least we had a decent view. The poor folks on the other side of the circular restaurant were probably staring at a wall.

Our waitress came by and made my mother’s night. Garden Grill served sweet tea as one of their beverages.

Hallelujah!

We were off to a good start!

Before we could get anything more than our drinks, the first character of the evening stopped by.

09.JPG

Chip!

Or was it Dale?

Okay, guys, I will admit that I’m terrible at remembering which chipmunk is which. I know one has a black nose and one tooth and the other has a brown nose and two teeth; my issue is remembering which one has the black nose. But I’m going with my gut and saying this was Chip.

Am I right? Someone please confirm or deny this!

Landon was very excited to see Chip (or Dale). I’m almost positive this was his first time meeting the two, which for a kid who loves character meets this was a big deal.

10.JPG

But what about Evie you say?

Where’s HER picture with Chip.

Or Dale. (But probably Chip.)

All you wonderful people are so smart, I bet you already know the answer to this. I mean, what good story involves both children liking the same thing? That’d be too simple! No parent in the history of parenthood has life that easy.

It’s, like, Rule 43 in the Kid Code: Whatever my sibling loves I must HATE.

Oh Evie, Evie, Evie…you keep me on my toes.

Up Next…The Scream Heard all Round the World (Showcase)

Everyone looked like they were in good spirits while heading to Epcot! Haha the trek to the Land does sound like hassle, but I like that you made it into a fun story ;)!

It's chip, it's chip! :thumbsup2

Oh no, doesn't sound like the meal went well for Evie...

That's Chip. Chip has a chocolate chip colored nose.

Your struggle makes me have great sympathy for parents at Disney. Why can't kuds just go where they're supposed to go or stay where they're supposed to stay? (The same goes for strollers, I think)

I hate this! I understand why they do it, but I feel like it wouldn't be that difficult to create two separate security entrances for Epcot. It would save a lot of time/headache for people.

Glad that MOST of you enjoyed the dinner at Garden Grill. I have never eaten there, either before it was a character dining experience or after. Even though almost all of the reviews I read are positive. And Chip and Dale are my favorite characters.

Yes, you were correct that it was Chip. I knew about the chocolate Chip nose thing but I didn't know they had different teeth!

If I didn't love the Land building as much as I do, I would probably skip that ordeal during some trips!

Thanks for confirming our dinner guest's identity!

Hopefully I'll remember this chocolate chip nose trick in the future!

I guess I should admit, this is something my mom jokingly tells Landon all the time. Whenever she's visiting and he gets too rambunctious, she'll say something like, "Ow, kiddo. You have to be careful. Who is going to take care of me when I'm old if you go and hurt yourself?"

I'm sure your nephews will be completely enthralled by the monorail. It's a hit with most kids!
Chocolate chip...how have I never heard of this before? Seems to be a pretty popular hint!

Garden Grill is a hard restaurant to pick, mostly because it's in Epcot with all these other amazing dining locations. I know for me, if I'm going to eat at a table service place in that park, I usually want it to be someplace in the World Showcase. (*cough* Via Napoli *cough*) Which is a shame, because I feel like if Garden Grill were in DHS or the MK, it would be a hard to get ADR. But then again, the theme fits in sooo well with Living with the Land that it wouldn't make sense anywhere else. Who knows...

When I first saw Chip and Dale in the parks I told myself Chip was the one with only one tooth, like he "chipped" his other one. That's how I used to remember it, but the chocolate chip trick is much easier and nicer!

We love Garden Grill! I'm sorry that Evie did not! And yes- I remember that Chip has a chocolate chip nose! <3

I'm very happy I finally tried Garden Grill. Although, it makes my life a whole lot harder now, because that's yet another restaurant in Epcot I love and want to eat at during every vacation. Decisions, decisions!

I get why they don't want strollers inside the Land, I really really do, but why does it have to be the most ridiculous building to get inside of ever?!

Oh no I'm sorry Evie freaked for the meal!! That's definitely not good.

I cannot wait for the day when I can visit Disney without a stroller, again. Between the changing locations at Pirates and the Land's long haul, keeping up with those things can be such a pain!

Happy holidays, DIS friends. I hope everyone has been having a wonderful winter break. We had a very relaxed Christmas and hope to have a similar New Year's Eve. I did forget Landon had a project for preschool to be completed before he returns to school, so we've been scrambling today to try and find the supplies necessary to complete the task. Whoops! Parenting fail on my part.
I did happen to notice while I was proofing my update that my posts might be coming across kind of whiny and full of complaints. I promise I don't intentionally try to do; this was a great trip and I'm so glad I took the kids to the parks over the summer. Given the chance to do it again, I would. So after this update I am going to try really hard to focus less on the negatives and highlight more of the positives!

July 21st Part 7:

Picking up right where I left off, my mom and I had just sat down to dinner at Garden Grill when Chip came up to our table and said hello. Landon loved the interaction; Evie took one look at the chipmunk and let out a blood curling scream. Pretty sure everyone in the restaurant heard the scream. I would even go so far as to say someone walking past the entrance heard Evie and thought to themselves: “Ahh, someone’s about to have a long dinner with an unhappy baby.”

*Sigh*

So much for that good mood Evie had on the way to the park. One look at Chip and she freaked. The strangest part of it all was that I wouldn’t say she was scared. She was more angry and confused. Like, it wasn’t part of the natural world to have an animal that big. We were upsetting the balance of nature and she was not okay with that. Not one bit.

Fortunately, the first round of food arrived before any other characters could stop by, so my mom and I were able to dish portions out to everybody and have a second to get settled.

The first course was a salad and rolls with some potato salad the chef had decided to whip up. This wasn’t on the menu and we couldn’t request the dish…it was just the delicious result of the cook’s whim. It’s a shame it wasn’t a regular item, though, because it was really good. I’m picky about my potato salad, but this one passed the taste test with flying colors.

The salad was fresh but had a lot of cucumbers in it, which is a food I don’t like so I only had a bite or two…As far as the bread went.

It served its main purpose.

That of keeping the kids occupied.

What parent doesn’t wait with bated breath until that beautiful bread bowl arrives to distract the kids from arguing or spilling their drinks?

Or to draw their attention away from gigantic Mickeys…

Unfortunately for my mother, I wasn’t cutting it for Evie that evening. She wanted to sit in Nana’s lap, so my mom had to set up camp with a one year old.

01.JPG

You can see in the photo that Evie was too busy watching her surroundings to eat much. Made life very interesting for my mom. She was scooping bites of salad here and there and avoiding wiggling elbows and restless feet. Ironically enough, when a character would reach the tables directly below us, Evie would start screaming their name and pointing in their direction.

“Pluto! Mommy, Pluto!”

From afar, the characters were great. From two feet away? Not so much.

Soon enough, our main course arrived.

02.JPG

I love my mom, if for no other reason than the fact that she continues to be surprised by the generous portions at Disney. She looked at all that meat in the skillet and told me I was crazy if I thought we’d be able to put a dent in it. To spare her immense guilt, the waitress informed us that anything not eaten would get recycled into electricity.

How cool is that?

I had heard that fun fact on a podcast before, but it was interesting hearing it from an actual Cast Member in a relevant setting.

All the food served was very good; I don’t think there was anything on the platter that I outright did not like. I only nibbled at a bite of the sausage because, well, living in Germany affords me a lot of opportunities to eat sausage. A lot. Honestly, I’m kind of sausage-d out. But I did demolish the turkey and stuffing and green beans. My mom had most of the pot roast and mashed potatoes, while the kids polished off the zucchini. Landon and I fought over the cranberry sauce, as we do during most holiday dinners.

Our waitress brought some mac and cheese and French fries halfway through our meal, and shamefully that’s what Evie ate the most of. She was so mad and overwhelmed that my mom and I struggled really hard getting her to eat anything. By that point I just wanted sustenance in her belly, no matter what it was.

While we were eating Mickey, Pluto, and Dale all came by to say hello, but with Evie flailing and screaming every time one approached I didn’t get too many pictures of the meets.

03.JPG

04.JPG

As our main course was wrapping up, my mom and I encountered the worst Catch-22 situation imaginable. Our table was about the third one away from the kitchen doors and the restaurant wasn’t overly full that night. So my kid, excitable little guy that he is, would see the characters passing by pretty frequently and feel the need to say hello to them. Landon would become so excited when he turned his head mid-bite and happen to see Mickey walking past. And I guess since it wasn’t that busy, the characters were feeling extra generous that evening and stopped in front of Landon almost every single time! Pluto, especially. He kept wanting to give Landon high fives, play peek a boo, return a quick wave.

It was amazing character interaction, and Landon could not believe how much attention he was getting.

But there was Evie.

WHY DO THESE ANIMALS KEEP COMING BACK?!?!

Landon’s on one end of the table drawing the characters to him like a beacon while Evie’s on the other throwing forks on the floor in frustration.

That was her go-to move when someone showed up.

Yell and throw a fork.

We went through seven forks.

Our server brought 4 extra when she saw what was happening.

I left a big tip.

By the time the dishes were cleared and the dessert was being prepped, my mother and I were both frazzled.

05.JPG

Full and happy. But frazzled.

Oh so frazzled.

Dessert arrived and due to all the mayhem I had forgotten to mention that I’m allergic to strawberries. Not wanting to drag the meal out any longer than necessary I just skipped eating and let my mom enjoy the strawberry shortcake all to herself.

The kids, meanwhile, each got a cookie.

That calmed Evie down for a few minutes.

In case you were wondering, yes, Evie was looking at pictures of Mickey on my mom’s phone. The very ones we took not twenty minutes earlier.

And she loved them.

What can I say? Evie liked the looks of the mouse a lot better through a screen than up close and personal.

Dinner complete, my mom and I took the kids downstairs to use Soarin’ Fastpasses that I was able to get earlier that afternoon. Since this is my mom’s favorite ride at Disney, I told her she could ride first and could take Landon on his first turn, too. The Cast Member at the entrance did check his height but said he was good to go. He even warned us they would probably check him again at the end, but to let whomever was working know that he’d been approved out there.

Sweet!

Landon officially hit the 40” mark. That was one less thing I had to stress over. I did make my mom grab a Rider Swap before we parted ways, that way if Landon loved the ride he could go again with me. Then, I took Evie over to the old paper FP distribution area and let her run around while we waited.

Since it was pretty late in the evening it wasn’t very crowded and those people that were there had kids, too. That must have been the unofficial baby playground of Future World.

Evie kept insisting on running to my feet and laying down on the ground.

Ew, Evie.

Ew.

Thankfully a big section of chairs emptied fifteen minutes into our wait and she spent the rest of the time climbing up and down on them.

My mom and Landon finished with Soarin’ and when I saw Landon I asked how he liked the ride.

“I hated it!”

Oh dear.

I looked up at my mom and she shook her head, eyes wide.

“It did not go well.”

“Really?”

“Mom, it was scary. Why would you let me ride that?”

Yikes, what was in this new film? Sharks? Volcanoes?

My mom then explained to me that there were a lot of 3D effects in this newer version that startled him. She said it was much more than the old golf ball coming towards you. I guess Landon’s sense of perception was getting really thrown off on the ride and it freaked him to the point where he buried his head in my mom’s shoulder until the end.

“So, buddy, does that mean you don’t want to go on it again?”

“No! No, no, no! Don’t make me ride it again.”

I threw up my hands. Fair enough. Soarin’ was out for Landon. Good to know. On the plus side, my mom enjoyed the new version; she got a kick out of seeing Neuschwanstein Castle in the same state she’d visited it (during the fall when all the leaves were changing), but she warned me that some of the scenes seemed tilted to her.

***To this day, if you ask Landon about Soarin' his response is, "Soarin? No, no, no. I don't like that. I'll try it again when I'm an adult."***

Since Landon wasn’t going with me, I pocketed the Rider Swap and used my Fastpass. The wait to get on wasn’t long at all, but while standing in the queue I was hit with a huge sense of homesickness for Alex. I don’t know what in the world triggered it, but for that ten minute stretch I really missed my husband and felt really sad being at Disney World without him. There were other moments throughout the week that made me think of him, but that instance was by far the worst. I’m sure a lot had to do with the fact that I felt like a little bit of failure with Evie at dinner. No matter what I tried, I couldn’t get her to stop screaming when a character came by and could barely get her to eat her food.

Evie is extremely close with Alex (not to say she’s not with me, but ultimately she’s a daddy’s girl through and through) and I couldn’t help but think that if Alex were at that meal, things would have turned out a lot smoother. Add to that the fact that I’d been parenting both kids with little breaks for 3 months and the sudden solitude was jarring. I didn’t know what to do with myself. I could stand there and-

Just stand there.

I didn’t have to keep an eye on anyone or look at my surroundings and try to predict what trouble my tiny humans were going to create with something as innate as a planter.

Of course, standing around allowed me to think, and thinking brought back wonderful memories of Alex and I standing in that same queue seven years prior. Good golly, we were young back on our first trip!

Look at us babies!

That was circa 2010. Pre-marriage, pre-kids, pre-a whole heck of a lot of things.

Seemed like another lifetime ago!

My solo self was put in the second row.

Where instead of thinking, I crammed my backpack into the mesh storage underneath the seat. Why I didn’t put it in the middle walkway, I don’t know. So dumb on my part, because at the end of the ride the poor guy next to me had to help me pull the thing back out. Talk about embarrassing…

Overall, I liked the new version. It was lovely seeing all the new countries and really does fit in with Epcot’s theme, but I could have done with less special effects. After riding it myself, I could definitely see how Landon got freaked out on it.

When I met back up with my mom and the kids, my mother informed me that Landon had a situation he was too scared to deal with and my mother wasn’t making any progress.

Ahh. Yes. My son has quite a few quirks, and one of them at the time was his insistence to wait until bedtime to, ah, use the restroom. So, I left my mom with Evie and took Landon to the nearby bathrooms. And spent thirty minutes trying to get him to understand that waiting until we were back at Shades wasn’t a great idea.

It didn’t work. Finally, I threw in the towel and told my mom we needed to head back to the resort. Our plan to watch IllumiNations had to be nixed. But, on the plus side, we got to see some of Happily Ever After while we waited for our Shades bus at the TTC.

Landon was thrilled he got to see some fireworks. It’s not Disney if there’s not fireworks.

That’s his opinion, of course.

While we waited for the bus, my mom and I had a conversation and discussed Evie’s unhappiness with the day. We both agreed that we needed to give her a break and find something she would enjoy, and the solution we came up with was skipping a park in the morning and hanging out around the resort, instead. It killed me a little (okay – A LOT) to waste a whole morning, however I hoped it would do wonders to Evie’s disposition.

Anything to let Evie have a better day than the one she was currently finishing up…
