Take Your 2-Year-Old to Disney! Aug '17 TR * COMPLETE 1/10/19

Great updates! Good to hear about your experience heading to Frozen at Rope Drop. We may need to try that on our next trip!

Ride Swap is great for those of use that have youngsters. Of course you don't really get to ride with your spouse which is a bummer at times, but at least Disney makes the swap process very easy and flexible. The school bread looks good. That is one thing I've never tried in all of our trips. Definitely going to have to make sure that on the list for next time!

I can certainly sympathize on kids not napping in the stroller. Our youngest is NOT a napper in the stroller at all. Put him in a bed/pack-n-play and he'll nap for two hours at least, but you couldn't pay him to nap in the stroller. Love your Ohana experience. That place is awesome and glad to hear they accommodated so well.

We were in Disney that week, too. And, our husbands seem very similar in their approach to Disney. ;-) We did do the first MNSSHP on our last night. It was definitely worth it! But, you were right to wait. We arrived at the park at 4pm after a full pool day and stayed through until the midnight close, but our almost 2 year old, and our 3 year old both passed out by 9:00 in the stroller. They didn't even make it to the parade. If we only had little ones I would not have purchased the tickets.
But, our older kids (5-8) LOVED it, and it was well worth it for them (and us grownups)!! We did not do any of the long character meet and greets, but decided to ride our favorite rides with minimal lines. We waved at some of them from a far though, and spotted Jack Skellington and Sally outside the Haunted Mansion.
Now I have the Christmas party on my list of to-do's :-). We are fortunately going back this summer (only because we have other plans in Orlando or my husband would never agree to it), but I am hoping to do a Christmas trip in maybe 2019 or 2020. Seeing the park decorated for Christmas is probably at the tip top of my bucket list, despite all the crowds!

Looks like you had a fun trip! I liked reading about the on-property experience since we always stay off-property. With 7 people we don't have many options and I like to prepare our own meals to save $$.

Great trip report so far. Joining in. I completely agree with your assessment of FOP. Simply Amazing!!!! May be the best ride I have ever been on. Period! It is interesting to watch how Ryann has handled this trip. We are taking our DS who will be 2 years and 10 months in 35 days. My DW and I are trying to plan a strategy for naps. I fear the excitement may over rule naps on most days for him. We shall see. Looking forward to the rest of your TR.

My older DD's allergies are currently egg, peanut, treenut, chicken, turkey, sunflower, sesame, dried beans, and buckwheat. The beans have presented as safe in testing, but she vomits when she eats them at home, so we just avoid them. She also has outgrown watermelon, peas, and wheat. My DD is also understandably pretty picky about her food, but she is able to read labels and screen her own food now, which helps a ton.

Wow, that's a lot to manage. That's great that she's old enough to read labels and determine what's safe. It's so crazy that she tests negative for beans but reacts when she eats them. Allergies are so bizarre...

I just found your trip report and following along! We took our girls for the first time at 2.85 and 4 and it was the best!

Welcome! :wave2:

She is so cute!

Thanks :goodvibes

Totally agree! My youngest was just shy of 3 and it was perfect!!!! I always tell folks between 2 and 3 is the prefect age for the first trip!

Agreed!

What a perfect way to start the trip! And so kind. It really is the little things that really sometimes make ALL the difference.

It really is, and Disney knows it and makes magic :wizard:

These are my favorite pictures! The ones just showing the pure joy of being in Disney. I feel like this age is perfect because they fully believe that that is Tigger!

Exactly!!! It really is pure joy and magic! I can't get enough of it

Haha-totally. Well, it seems like you have a cute little mouse who can try to convince him!

::yes:: :thumbsup2

Don't you love how it seems that all allergists give totally different information and advice...

Yup! We found our current allergist on the 3rd try. The first one we saw didn't know what a baked milk food challenge was but said sure let's try it
The second allergist said she didn't feel comfortable doing food challenges but I could schedule one with another doctor in the practice. When I called to ask a couple of questions, the doctor doing the challenge wouldn't talk to me, and only the first doctor who wasn't comfortable with the food challenge would return my call. She basically said since I had so many questions, I may feel more comfortable going to a more progressive practice... :scared1:
So finally we found allergist #3 who we love!

Are you a Member of the FB group 'Disney Chefs Rock Food Allergies'?

Yes! It was so great for preparing for this trip!

I know that we're so fortunate to have a close knit community where many people participate in the Teal Pumpkin Project :)

Yes, definitely :goodvibes

I should try to do a trip report! I always say that I will, and then I never keep track of things well enough lol. I might try! I really enjoy reading others, especially when we have something in common like yours :)

Yes, you should!! I took notes on my phone when we were waiting on lines, or riding the bus, etc.

It does stink to ride alone using rider swap, but it does force me to talk to other people
Inability to nap in a stroller can certainly be frustrating. DD's friend A fell asleep multiple times a day while they were out and about in the parks: during shows, in the middle of meals, during fireworks, etc. :rotfl: It's so funny how two kids that are the exact same age can be so different!

Thank you for making me feel better about my decision not to do MNSSHP! Maybe it's something we can do in the next few years when DD is ~5
Christmas trip would be great! Will you go during Christmas or can you go in November or early December when it's "Christmastime" but without the full-on crowds?

Have you looked into renting DVC points? I wonder if it would be comparable in price to staying off-property...

Welcome! :wave2: You're going to have such a fantastic time!!!!! :hyper: Since you rode FOP, you must have been there recently. Was your DS with you for that trip?
I tried to leave time for a nap most days, and figured if it didn't happen it didn't happen. But I wanted to at least try not to plan anything high priority during nap time. Tiredness may just overrule excitement  You'll figure it out as you go!

Sorry- not sure how to quote & reply! I am still relatively new to this forum. My job is pretty crazy from early September through the second week in December, so we would probably have to weather the crowds, and most likely over break as my oldest (9 now) may be in middle school by then--scary thought! I can't imagine pulling her out of school for a week for Disney. We did for her first trip in K. Easy! But, we've been a few times now so this is not a once in a lifetime trip, and our town's curriculum is pretty insane. I definitely wouldn't rule it out, but I would be a lot less likely to do it than when she was really small. I have heard stories about how insane it is over that week between Xmas and NY. It would be fun to be in Disney that week, though. My DD3 birthday is 12/28, and DD4 is 12/31, so we could double up on birthday and holiday magic! It would be really special!

I was at MK on the 4th of July 2 years ago and it was insane. Crowd level was 10/10, and it was 100 degrees out. People were sitting all over the floors of the gift shops just trying to find a place to sit and cool off. Fastpass line for Splash Mountain was 35 minutes. We had a rider swap and I ended up not even using it after DH was finished riding with the girls because of the crowds in that area of the park, and the incredibly long wait. We were at the park at 8am and went back to condo to watch fireworks from the window, which ended up being a good decision since the crowds seemed to be getting bigger for the fireworks, etc. I was kicking myself that we didn't pick a different park that day since friends had gone to AK and HS and said it wasn't bad. Poor planning on my part. We will be there again over that same week this summer and I will definitely use a differently strategy this time!

I do follow David's DVC rental on FB. I think it's something worth looking into. I don't think it will be any cheaper, but it may be worth the extra $$ if we could save some time on inconvenience, etc. Park tickets are just very pricey for a family of our size, so we need to budget down to the last dollar. We won't stay anywhere gross or low quality but we have always managed to find full kitchen condos within a few minutes of the park for around $140-$160/night.

Good luck with planning your next trip!

We said “hi” and “bye” to the bus driver as we got on and off the bus and then Ryann added, “Have a nice day!” It was really cute and the driver must have appreciated it because he gave us a Transportation Card with some fun facts and a hidden mickey tip.
How precious!

We arrived at Frozen Ever After at 9:04 with a 10-minute standby wait posted. It actually took less than 5 minutes to walk through the queue and board. I was SO excited to ride this. I was sort of indifferent when it opened because I wasn't yet a huge Frozen fan. But with Frozen being one of DD's favorite movies at the time of the trip, I was super psyched to see her reaction to riding it.
Awesome you got on so fast. I've heard horror stories of stampedes through the world showcase. Glad to see you didn't encounter any of that!

So... DD's reaction? "I wanna ride it again!" :thumbsup2 Good thing we had a FP for later!
Smart Mama!

It was pretty empty and her favorite thing to do was just run and run and run all over the place. She did notice a picture of Figment as a skunk and said, "he's stinky!" She also picked up a Figment plush and gave it lots of hugs.
2img_2783-png.289916
I don't know what it is about kids and Figment, but they sure do love him, stink and all!

I boarded at 10:43 so I waited on the FP line a total of 26 minutes. It wasn't too terrible but it definitely wasn't a great use of early morning time.
Wow, I wonder what the problem was. Maybe one of the screens went down?

img_2811-png.289929

...The beer cart that closed right in front of us on our last trip and left DH unable to complete his Drinking Around the World challenge!
Wa Wa Waaaa!!! Nothing sadder than a closed beer cart.

While waiting to see Mary, DD practiced saying "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" When it was her turn she actually ran to Mary, but then became really shy again. Not as shy as yesterday, but she still didn't really talk. And she didn't perform and say the biggest word you ever heard  But it was still a great meet and DD was very happy.
img_2816-png.289931
That face is priceless!!!! She's too cute for words

img_2855-png.289934

DD noticed Alice meeting a long line of guests and wanted to see her. I really didn't want to wait so we just called out hi and waved in Alice's direction. She didn't see us but DD seemed very satisfied and we continued on toward Norway.
We did this with Casey all the time and it worked like a charm. I think as long as they are "acknowledged" all is right in the world.

If I'm honest, the stroller nap was always a pipe dream. She's never been one to nap in the stroller. We walked around a little bit before it became crystal clear that a nap had zero chance of happening. We decided to visit my favorite WS pavilion: Mexico!
We were in this same boat. Casey never once slept in her stroller or even the car for that matter. She's like me, we need a bed and a pillow to sleep. Looks like she was a trooper though!

img_2891-png.290074

A beer from Canada!
Vindication! :drinking1

We just made it in time to catch the monorail. We got on at 3:15 and were on our way to an early dinner. DD really enjoyed her first ever monorail ride.
giphy.gif
This is perfect!!!!!!! Think I just found my new favorite gif

The pot stickers may be my favorite thing here. I can't get enough of them. And it was amazing to be eating them and sharing them with DD. This just never happens at restaurants for us and it was pure magic.
img_2956-png.290390
Yum, yum, and yum!!!!! I could totally devour all of this right now

And DD got her own fabulous looking dessert. She's never been treated to a dessert so beautiful before. I know it's simple but she LOVED it! The ice cream was Rice Dream I believe.
img_2960-png.290392
They really go all out for her allergies. So lucky!

giphy.gif

When the finale started, I realized that the whole Tumble Monkey part of the show had been skipped! I was pretty disappointed because I thought DD would love it, but looking back she loved it anyway and now we'd have something new to look forward to next time we see it.
Now I don't know which gif is my favorite :-)

DD: Is Aladdin in Disney World?
Me: Yes.
DD: We didn't meet him! We have to go back!

DD: Is Rapunzel in Disney World?
Me: Yes.
DD: We didn't meet her! We have to go back!
Job well done Heather. Your hubby doesn't stand a chance

That would be super special to celebrate both birthdays in Disney. I once had to leave Disney the day before my birthday and that was very sad :sad2:
When I was younger we only ever went to Disney during the week between Christmas and New Years. It was crowded but still better than being at home! :thumbsup2

The crowds + the heat sound like a very bad combo :scared:

I'm not sure how it compares to staying off property but it will be cheaper than booking a Deluxe straight through Disney at least.

Awesome you got on so fast. I've heard horror stories of stampedes through the world showcase. Glad to see you didn't encounter any of that!

I was expecting a stampede. Overall the crowds were very low though so that helped I'm sure...

We did this with Casey all the time and it worked like a charm. I think as long as they are "acknowledged" all is right in the world.

Haha agreed!

They really go all out for her allergies. So lucky!

They did! It was so appreciated

:rotfl: You're so funny

Job well done Heather. Your hubby doesn't stand a chance

THANKS!!! :rotfl2: I hope you're right!!!!!!!! :woohoo:

Just caught up on a bunch of updates and I am loving seeing how Ryann is getting more and more into Disney and so excited with everything!

Chapter 14
In Which Buzz Isn't So Scary

DH got back pretty late from his solo time at Animal Kingdom and it was a little difficult to wake him up early but we had to get ready for another rope drop morning! We were headed to Hollywood Studios today!

So a note about the buses at Coronado: There are 4 bus stops and they are numbered. Stop 1 is at El Centro (main building), Stop 2 is near Casitas (where we were), Stop 3 is near Ranchos, and Stop 4 is near Cabanas. To make this more complicated, the order of bus stops for park buses is 2, 3, 4, and then 1. (By the way, the order of the Disney Springs buses is 1, 2, 3, 4 so you can use the buses to travel internally within the resort too) So when the park buses would enter Coronado, they would first come to the stop closest to our room which was great because we always got a seat. Then we would ride the bus all the way around the resort before we were finally on our way to our destination, so it also added about 10 minutes on to the bus ride. We could have walked to Bus Stop 1 (El Centro) in the mornings because that bus stop was also pretty close, but then we risk the bus already being full before it even picks us up, (this happened to M, S, and A on our first park day and they waited an hour before they finally got a bus to MK and they missed rope drop and the opening show). I would say that if you're early enough, you will be fine, because our morning buses always stopped at El Centro, but we were leaving earlier than them in the mornings.

So on this morning, as we were walking through the parking lot to the bus stop, we saw a bus leave the stop before we could get there. Once we got to the stop, at 7:45, there was no DHS bus listed on the times board. I was convinced that it must have been a DHS bus that we missed since all of the other park buses had times listed on the board. I was debating whether we should take our chances and try to make it to the El Centro stop to catch that bus, but since we didn't even know for sure if it was a DHS bus we decided not to. Eventually a time came up on the board, and then it kept moving later and later and later.
giphy.gif

The latest it got was 8:11 which would've meant we waited 26 minutes for a bus, which really isn't that bad, but I was so frustrated because I was so sure we had just missed the last bus by a minute. But happily, at 8:05 it suddenly jumped forward to 8:06 and up pulled the bus. So we really only waited 21 minutes and I was so happy the bus was here that I was totally over the whole thing. I guess I was a little over-dramatic...
giphy.gif

We ended up making it to DHS a little before 8:30 and at 8:33 we were walking down Hollywood Boulevard.
IMG_3030.png

So after all that worrying, the timing worked out great because we only had to wait a few minutes for the tapstiles to open up and we were right at the front of the pack waiting for rope drop.
IMG_3034.png

I was hoping they would let us in at 8:45 but we had to wait until 8:55. Looking around, it really didn't seem like there were that many people and I suppose low crowds is better than an earlier open ::yes::

When the ropes dropped we traveled with the masses toward Toy Story. As usual, some people were pushing and running. We saw a group run through the path that branches out toward where Starring Rolls used to be. I guess they thought since it was empty they could run and come out the other side in front of everyone? Nope! There was a cast member waiting for them at the end who made them stop and wait for the rest of the herd to catch up to the point where they were, and then slowly led them along with the rest of the people who were following the rules and not acting like wild animals... I have to say, it was very satisfying...

Once we got to Pixar Place, instead of getting on line for Toy Story, we did something else...
IMG_3091.png

I agonized over what we should do first: TSMM or Meet Buzz and Woody. I had read that the lines to meet them tended to get very long very quickly and this was a priority for us. I actually posted on the theme park strategies board asking for people's advice and the consensus seemed to be to do the Meet and Greet first. So that's what we did... and guess what!

...Did you guess?
giphy.gif

We were the very first ones to meet Buzz & Woody!

The queue was completely empty with no one in front or in back of us. We walked right through and it was like they were there just waiting for us! On our first day, DD was totally unprepared for Buzz being huge (and not the size of a toy) and was scared to meet him. This morning I reminded her that when she met them they would be big, and it helped because she ran right into Buzz's arms. She seemed to really be in awe that she was with both of them. I felt like we rushed this meet because I was anxious to get on line for TSMM before it got too long but looking back at my video, DD was with them for over 70 seconds so it wasn't too short. Woody did a Rex impression that was hysterical but I didn't get a great video of it.

giphy.gif

From here we got on the TSMM line which looked really long because it was backed up outside but it was moving quickly. DD was pretty cranky, probably because of the long day yesterday with no nap, and she had pointed to the gift shop across the way and said "Alien!" She had gift cards from her birthday that I had saved for her to get souvenirs, so I quickly ran across, saw both an Alien pillow and plush, chose the plush because it was cheaper and smaller, paid for it with my magic band, and then dashed back into the line just as we were about to enter the building. It instantly cheered her up.
IMG_3036.png

It ended up taking 15 minutes to get through the line so I was very glad that I followed the advice of the Dis'ers and we did the character meet first. It ended up working out perfectly.

I put DD on my lap and the CM said, "Oh, just let her play" implying that she should sit next to me and DH could go on the other side. I said nah and I'm so glad I did because she wouldn't have been able to reach and she would have been flopping around all over the place (more than she already was!). As fun as the ride is, it's really jerky! The 3D glasses were too big and would not stay on her face for anything. Even if I balanced them, they would just fly off as soon as the ride moved. And I mean seriously fly! She started out playing a little bit but quickly lost interest and just wanted to watch everything that was going on. If DH was sitting on the other side, I wouldn't have been able to help him get a high score (he knows where all the secret targets are. Yeah... the non-Disney-fan). He was very disappointed that he didn't get a high score other than "Best in Vehicle." I don't think he understands how obsessed some people are with this ride...
IMG_3070.png

He did beat me! Although our accuracy was the same! And I did have a toddler on my lap.....
IMG_3069.png

We were off the ride at 9:25 and I was super proud that we had completed the M&G and TSMM within a half hour. The Disney Jr. Live on Stage show was at 9:40 so we decided to head over and see if there were any characters to meet in the courtyard. I parked our stroller and noticed a squirrel was dangling off of a mesh bag that was hanging on a stroller's handlebars. I walked over and made some noises to try to scare it but it just jumped into the next stroller's bottom pouch. Disney squirrels are fearless. A CM noticed me and said that they named the squirrel Charlie and that she's there all the time. Then I couldn't quite follow what she was saying but I think it was that Charlie had a lot of babies

We then saw Storm Troopers come out of Launch Bay. DH wanted DD to go up to them because they were interacting with other kids, but she was terrified. She squeezed herself up against DH as though to hide. They stopped another young girl and demanded to see her identification, ie her Magic Band. It was pretty funny. A friend told me that you can increase your chances of getting their attention by wearing Star Wars clothing. His cousin was "arrested" and marched through the park with her hands behind her back while escorted by storm troopers because of whatever was on her shirt, they accused her of being with the rebellion.
IMG_3076.png

We went to go meet Jake but he wasn't due out for a few minutes. There was no one on line at all other than us. While we were waiting, Pluto came out right nearby so we decided to go meet him in the meantime. We were third on line for Pluto.
STUDIO_PLYDSCHAR3_20170826_404471108755.png

I think she was more excited to see Toodles in the background than she was to see Pluto!

We told DD to pet Pluto but she wasn't getting it so DH helped her. Pluto's reaction was adorable.

giphy.gif

Jake came out just as we were finishing with Pluto and there was still no one waiting for him just we just walked right up. DD was so excited to meet him. Jake spent a while with her. There was a lot of high-fiving and hugging and they even danced a little bit. It was a really great meet.
STUDIO_PLYDSCHAR2_20170826_404471189639.png

We were having so much fun with Jake that we didn't realize it was already 9:40 and by the time we rushed over to the entrance to the show, they had just closed the doors and we weren't able to get in. The CM was very apologetic but we totally understood that he couldn't let us in. Each time we had passed Voyage of the Little Mermaid, DD had pointed it out and said she wanted to see Ariel so we decided to do that now. We were pretty early for the 10:00 show and the waiting room was pretty empty.
IMG_3084.png

While we were waiting, I was texting with M to see what they were up to because they were also at Studios this morning. We told them we were going to see VOLM but they were in the middle of meeting characters in the Disney Jr. Courtyard (we must have just missed them) so we said we'd just meet up later for the FP we scheduled together.

DD was so tired but she watched the show intently and really enjoyed it. I hadn't seen it in a while, I think the last time was 6 years ago, and I didn't really remember it. I love the opening scene, it's just so neat. As for the rest of the show.... eh. I felt like there was way more time spent on fighting Ursula than showing Ariel & Eric. Oh well.
IMG_3089.png

Once the show was over we were almost at the end of our FP window for TSMM. We scanned our bands at 10:20 and our window ended at 10:25. There should be a 15 minute grace period but I didn't want to test it. The line was very quick and this time we had DD sit in between us.
IMG_3092.png

IMG_3114.png

I have in my notes that this was a personal record for me, but I honestly don't know how I knew that at the time :confused3 Maybe I meant for the day
IMG_3093.png

IMG_3121.png

DD just looked at this picture and told me she wants to color that picture of Jessie, Woody, and Bullseye

After our busy morning, DH and I were hungry and I had a particular snack in mind...

Sounds like a good morning so far, even with the bombs in the road.

I need to try and get to ride TSM more than once a trip. We all love it. Glad she liked meeting Buzz better the second time.

Just joining in! We love taking our littles! All 3 have went at 13 months, and we took our third again when he was 2- he also asks daily when he can go back. Love hearing about your adventures- thanks for sharing!

Just got back from taking my 2 1/2 yo for the first week of December. It was his second trip as we went when he was 7 weeks old for my sister’s wedding.

I am enjoying your report! I have a two year old that we will be taking to Disney in April. This will actually be her second trip as she went when she was 15 months old too. She had a blast on her first trip and I'm so excited to see how she reacts to this trip since she is more familiar with all things Disney now!

Sounds like a good morning so far, even with the bombs in the road.

Haha, it was a good morning! I tend to get all worked up when I don't need to... :upsidedow
I'd say riding TSM twice is very doable, especially since they added the third track and wait times overall are lower.

:wave2: Welcome! Thanks for joining in. That's so great you got to take all 3 kids when they were young!

Yay! How was your trip? I'm sure it was very different than going when he was 7 weeks ;)

Ahhhh you're going to have such an amazing time! 15 months is quite a bit older than my DD was for her first trip but it was a totally different trip! I'm sure it will be for you too. I hope you have the best time!

Just stumbled upon your thread and I had to comment before I read through. I have 18 month old twins and from pregnancy, I told my husband we would be taking them before they turned 3. He knows I'm obsessed and Bc we will be 'saving' money since they will still be free, he gave up the fight. He seems to really enjoy it while he is there as well but would never plan to go himself.

We were lucky enough to take them at 7months for a family trip but they basically slept through the whole thing. Really excited for the next one (and the one after that, and the one after that... )

Looking forward to reading about your trip!

Welcome! :wave2: Thanks for joining in. Your DH sounds just like mine! :rotfl: The next trip will be soooo different than taking them at 7 months. Do you have anything planned? :hyper:
