We are going on the Mexican Riviera cruise next year. Should we be worried about port excursions? :worried:

If a port is deemed to be unsafe, they will cancel that port stop. It happened on our Mexican riviera cruise in 2011, they cancelled the stop in Mazatlan and we did two stops at Puerto Vallerta instead.

Yikes. That seems scary too!

More shootings in America on my news. Should I cancel my trip to NY and Boston next month?
Just wanted to say 'Welcome to Massachusetts'! And...sorry it's so cold and snowy this time of year--hopefully it'll be warmer for your visit--we're in a nasty cold snap right now...our nights have been in the negative numbers (Fahrenheit), days in the single digits! Fall is the nicest time to visit New England, but hopefully you'll still enjoy your trip--bring warm clothes!

I would be cautious, not necessarily cancel but be aware of my surroundings, just like I would in a big city like New York or Chicago. Mexico has a great deal of drug cartel-related crime and violence and has had it for several years. I'm a Texan, and growing up we felt perfectly safe touring the Mexican border towns without a thought of any type of crime beyond pickpocketing. Not anymore. Those same towns are among the most dangerous in Mexico today. The Riviera is a different area, but I still recommend that anywhere in Mexico, you should choose your excursions carefully and with safety in mind.

I'm not worried... we did a Mexican riviera cruise in October (fabulous, Id like to do it again sometime) and will be doing a Western with a couple stops in Mexico this December. The only time we felt even marginally unsafe was in Mazatlan, and only because they are doing an over the top show to make tourists feel safe by parading police men (with their big guns) everywhere in the areas to show you are "safe".

Haha thanks. I love Boston but it will be my first time in winter.
I'm lucky enough that the ship I've been working on did the Canada/New England itinerary in the fall, so I got to spend two months doing just that, it was stunning.

Well, I guess that is a good sign?

Is too, except we got two stops in Cabo

Mexico used to be one of my favorite for all-inclusive, but we are now avoiding it. Now, for a cruise stop I would still go but be very careful where you go, stay with a cruise excursion or other reputable company.
I agree the cruise line won't take chances if there is a known issue in the area. Most of the issues are near the borders, but can happen anywhere.
DH watches the Narcos and El Chapo Netflix series... I have been watching with him and that was a mistake..... Freaks a person right out, most likely unnecessarily. Sure the cops walk around with their big guns but the Cartel is not afraid of the police, so it doesn't automatically mean you're safe. As others said, just stay with your cruise group, be aware of your surroundings, don't go searching for trouble....and you should be fine.

I understand what you are saying but not completely an accurate comparision when it comes to American Police and Safety infrastructure vs Mexican Police and Safety infrastructure? The Mexican police get routinely threatened and bribed so it's not always the same. But generally I agree with your point that the chances are low that you are impacted on crime but I do think it's a reasonable question when crime ticks up.

I suppose you are kidding, but nonetheless, I hope you enjoy New England in winter! (I live here in New England). It is REALLY cold right now, even by our standards. (Though much colder in the upper Midwest.)

Seriously though the weather is probably a bigger risk than the shootings. Despite what we all see in the news, violent crime is near all-time lows in the US.

I can't speak directly to the OP and Mexico, but I do feel that you are likely to be quite safe.

I have been to Mexico twice this year (Riviera Maya)- Cozumel and Playa del Carmen. I never felt unsafe.

actually, I guess that would be twice last year lol. I'm still trying to get used to it being 2018

Headed to Cozumel on Saturday for three weeks and then again in May for 3 weeks. Not one iota worried.

I'm just saying, you watch the news where I live and Mexico very rarely comes up. However, violence in America is reported almost daily...

So, from what I see on the tv/hear on the radio/read in the papers then it's also a reasonable question...

Cozumel I am not worried about, as it is not on the Mexican Riviera cruise, nor is it one of the high-risk areas. I am speaking to Mazatlan, Cabo and Puerto Vallarta. :hippie:
