TSM closing temporarily?

It only makes sense that at some point they will need to close the entire ride to change to the new entrance. It makes sense that they will close one track as they move to changing the entrance. Its anyones guess, how long it will be closed for the final change. However, when it closes, it means the opening of Toy Story Land is close.

Have you heard when they may close the whole thing? From the article it looks like February March, but I can't really interpret it clearly.

I saw some mention of it being closed entirely "for a month" to make the final switch. I don't think that is based on any facts though. But if it for the final change over to the new entrance than it would make sense it is for right before TSL opens meaning it would be in the April/May timeframe (depending on when soft openings are)

Unless they work it so they hook up the new entrance but then still have a temporary entrance in the old way to allow for it to be up and running for a bit before the full Land opens

I guess you never know, but I would think that the first indication of a "complete" closure would be an inability to get a FP 60 days in advance. I believe MDE is still giving out FP's for TSMM at this point. Or, for example, does Disney/MDE allow you to get a FP for a ride that during a time that the ride is scheduled for a refurb? I wouldn't think Disney would do that.

If they do actually close TSMM, they should allow people to hop out of the park for free. Or only charge half price/half day.

Its been suggested a couple of times on Disboards after The Great Movie Ride opened. Personally, I think its a great idea. The ability to hop over to Epcot, for example, for free without hopper tickets would be great.

But sadly, I don't see any hope of Disney actually doing this. If you think about it, fewer rides equals fewer cast members and less maintenance cost. And, folks are still paying the same for a ticket. Its a good money maker for them, and they are happy. We're the ones left with a bad taste in our mouths.

Even without TSMM, the park has 3 rides, 2 shows, and 2 walkthroughs. I believe that Animal Kingdom Park opened with 3 rides (if you include the train), 2 shows, and 2 walkthroughs.

We're going in 11 days, I had been excited for some time now that there were 3 tracks as that would mean lower wait times, I guess that's gone. Based on the chatter in here though, it sounds unlikely that the whole thing will be closed down before we get there on the 19th or leave on the 3rd, so I guess that's positive :)

HS has way more than 2 shows. Little Mermaid, Frozen BatB, Muppets, Disney Jr, Indiana Jones, 2 Star Wars videos, First Order, Jedi Training, plus 3 night time shows. There's still lots to do and I can easily spend a full day there.

FPs are available for March 9th, the farthest out I can make FPs. Availability is not good though - worse than I've ever seen it. I skipped MGM in favor of MK 3 weeks out because all I could get for TSMM was late afternoon/evening.

60 Days -- Plenty of times
59 Days -- Almost no morning FPs. Very sporadic, likely cancellations/reschedules.
29 Days -- First available FPs between 3 PM and 6 PM

Without TSMM, for those who don't do scary (RNRC and TOT), that pretty much leaves the shows (BATB, VOTLM, Muppets, Disney Jr., Indiana Jones, and Frozen) and Star Tours. There are some good shows, but there's only so many times you can do them before they begin to wear thin. Fingers crossed if they do close, its a short closure.

Agreed. I only go every 2-3 years or so, sometimes less frequently, so I tend to do most of the shows each time. Just wanted to point out that there were a lot more than 2 shows there as mentioned by the previous poster.

This describes our outlook exactly. We only have one park day on our upcoming trip. TSM being closed would truly be the tipping point- we would choose a different park, even though we like Star Wars and all the various shows.

I have FPs on March 2nd, so I hope they don't decide to close it then!

So even more than Animal Kingdom Park had.

I would expect no considerations regarding a TSMM closure other than maxing out whatever impromptu programming that they can within Hollywood Studios itself.

As far as FPP, remember they were offering FPP for GMR right until they announced it closing. I think they only gave 3 week notice for it closing.

Ah, this is not looking good for the home team. I didn't realize they were going to shut down TSMM to complete the entrance to TSL. I mean it make sense, just didn't register.

We were going on May 5. Now I have to decide if it is really, really worth it or if we might make better use of our theme park fee at another park.

Our kids are too young for thrill rides, so RNRC and ToT are out (neither does my husband and I hate ToT). TSMM is my oldest's favorite ride. We enjoy the shows, but we've gone in 2014 & 2017. Half of our kids are too old for Disney Jr. But we all love Fantasmic. Is it going to be worth it for us? I just don't know. That's something we will have to discuss and decide I suppose.

Would the app allow you to make fastpasses if they knew it was going to be closed? Our trip is the second full week of March and I was able to make fastpasses for it.

If they knew it was going to be closed, I doubt it, I have FP for the first week in March.

We’re in the same boat. Our HS day is 4/30. From the sounds of things it seems very unlikely to be open then. We only have one kid who wants to do RNR and ToT. Other 2 are not willing/tall enough. We don’t have hoppers ... so I guess it’s time to go ask the kids how big of a must do JTA really is.

If I remember correctly people had FPs for the week or two they took the whole ride down when they added the 3rd rail. In a way that’s probably better. The further out they predict the closure the more padding they’re going to add. If they wait until the 11th hour to make the announcement they can probably be more precise about the closure window they need (assuming they need to leave it closed until the land opens).

However, given the state of the park, I also don’t love not having a solid answer further out. If we switch days I’m going to do a second AK day and I’d want to know 60 days out.

We have a trip planned 5/3-6th and I’m afraid that it may be closed then as well. That trip is a mother-daughter trip for myself, DD10, my friend and her DD. I’ll be so bummed if they can’t experience HS! I was hoping for an AP or DVC soft opening but it sounds like we will be a bit too early. I think they will have single park tickets so without hoppers, I’d skip HS during this timeframe too.
