Do Not Disturb Gone! (BLT)

That would probably be better, but according to some reports here on the DisBoards, including within this thread, there have already been instances where a male employee went to check a solo female's room.

I also always use it, but recently I've been told that some hotel employees have a quick and easy way to open the security latch from outside.

That would also make the assumption that a woman couldn't be a terrorist though, wouldn't it?

Which brings us back to square one that these "security" checks accomplish nothing other than making people angry.

Clearly the answer to allay everyone's comcerns and fears is to hire an all female security team as it appears the issue is having a strange MAN coming into your room.

Problem solved. You're welcome.
Just don't knock when I am napping. It really isn't that difficult.

But I will say that having a woman do it, won't help. What about the lone male in the room? In today's environment, a male alone with a woman puts the man at risk for unjustified accusations.

Gotcha...so TWO female security officers do room checks together. Problem solved again!

(And you do realize I'm being facetious, right?)

I haven't seen (or heard) any reports of very extreme measures being used with ordinary situations at Disney or other hotels. (Which is what you are describing...overriding/removal of the security latch.)

You are right, there are no reports of that yet.

However there are reports of staff knocking persistently and agressively for extended periods of time when people have the door deadbolted. The question is what is the next course of action if the people don't answer the door?

No such assumption was made. She may be a little less likely to be a rapist, and may be a little less likely to physically overpower another woman, but all dangers still exist.

On that point, we agree.

I suppose it depends on how crazy folks want to make their vacation. I wouldn't ignore someone (staff) who was repeatedly knocking on my hotel room door for extended periods of time. That goes for Disney or other hotel brands.

We agree on both points.

I was just pointing out that it would be hard to have this policy in place, but not check the rooms of women staying alone. In theory a women could just as easily be trained in combat and have a stash of assault rifles in her room.

Suppose you're using the toilet, or taking a shower, so you can't answer the door, and maybe you don't even hear them over the shower water. Better make sure you locked the bathroom door even if you're alone, but when you step out of the bathroom, a stranger could be in the room, so now you need to get dressed in the bathroom.

We agree on both points.

OK, at first I thought you meant the person wanting to enter the room might be someone dangerous, pretending to be an employee, but now I see what you mean.

What about the scenario if a minor child is in the room alone? It's not unreasonable to leave a child over 12 in the room while you go to the food court, front desk, etc. What are we to tell our kids to do while this man repeatedly bangs on the door??? It's hard to predict what a scared kid might do- and there is no reason for an adult(man or woman) to be alone with anyone in a hotel room, much less a child!

What if I've left the room and DW is there by herself. She doesn't feel comfortable opening the door for a strange man that may or may not be hotel staff?

Pretty hard to tell for sure through a peep hole. Lot's of women would be nervous to open the door in this situation.

I'd be going straight to the press with that one.

That's a good question. My instructions to my son are to not answer the door anytime I'm away. He usually doesn't want to stay behind so I probably won't make it an option for a little while longer, until he looks his age anyway.

Again its about not knowing if they are legit workers or not. If a child or adult sees a badge{[officer] and a CM I would be more likey to not feel threatened or scared. Right now I will be deadbolting the door and NEVER open up willingly. If they are who they say they are they can open the door just like housekeeping can.

I haven't read all 732 posts on this thread, but I have read a lot of them and I wondered:

(1) Is this policy, which policy I'm not totally clear on, in effect at all the WDW resorts? Or just some of them?

(2) Is hanging the new tag on the door and then putting on the latch sufficient to be left alone? Or is a guest now obligated to admit this knocking-on-the-door person into the room?

(3) If WDW is so concerned about security, how about having every single person who visits the parks go through the metal detectors? I actually don't understand why they don't do that right now, unless maybe they changed their policy. But when I was there 3 weeks ago, only random people were selected to go through the metal detectors.

I deleted several other things I wanted to say because I don't want to get into an argument with anyone. This is WDW we're talking about here. I go to WDW to enjoy myself, relax, have a great time. Not be disturbed at my resort when my husband and I want to be left alone to take a nap or enjoy marital relations or, you know, use the toilet.

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 to all three!

So I just did a quick google search for youtube videos of how to open the Disney room style latches and they can be opened in much less than 30 seconds without requiring any fancy tools. I have not heard any stories yet on if Disney will attempt bypass the latch. But it isn't difficult.

On our way to the airport now after a 2 night stay at the Poly. DH ran the marathon yesterday so the kids and I had breakfast and hung out in the room. Housekeeping came by around 9:45 and I politely declined cleaning as we were checking out today. After he got back and a nap we were getting ready to leave for HDDR; it was around 2:30 when a gentleman came to the door and said our room was on the list of rooms for security check. I told him we were on our way out within 10 minutes and he just waited for us to leave, no insistance or intrusion. In fact, he knocked so lightly that he had to knock twice because I didn’t realize what the noise was the first time.

Wasn’t bad because he didn’t force his way in or bang on the door as others have reported, but not totally random either as we told him to wait a few minutes. Totally would have had time to put away weapon etc if we had them.

Curious in this case: Did you have late checkout? The times I've asked (usually for running races), I can never get a checkout as late as 2:30 pm-- maybe 1 pm at the latest.
So that *might* explain why they came back by, because generally on a checkout day, the guest is well out of the room by 2:30.

We won't be at Disney for a bit, but I latch the hotel door from the inside no matter what, so I'm not too concerned about being barged in on, and I somehow think this is not going to be as intrusive as people fear in the long run. I'd still rather have my room checked by a staff member than listen to a barking dog.

The deadbolt is the more important thing. The latch is easy to open or kick right out of the wall.

I'm guessing she meant they were checking out the next day.
