Monorail Red door OPEN while in motion! Video Link

The track while could use some work is not nearly as in the shape that the trains are in. You get rid of monorails you have to find other ways to move people which is still going to cost a lot of money.

I miss the bus as an option from TTC to MK. It was quick, safe, and efficient. Not flashy or futuristic, but easy to implement and a much more pleasant experience than the other options.

This issue is a symptom of the larger problem, which is the ageing, failing monorail system.

No doubt, but I would still swap sensors to be safe in the mean time. And again-eliminate the monorails IMO (and yes, invest in other methods instead).

I am fortunate to have gotten some more info on this situation.

Monorail red is out of service for the foreseeable future. Maintenance isn't even being allowed to doing anything on their own yet. All of the monorails are going through their 6 month evaluations early now. Automation of the monorails had nothing to do with the incident and this is the first open door incident on record for the WDW monorails. Pilots are required to check mirrors for issues and it seems that was part of the problem as well. Disney seems to be taking the incident very seriously.

As they should be.

It doesn’t negate the fact they need new trains which is beating the dead horse but still true. Also feel like they could replace them in phases to lower the cost burden to a financial quarter, but what do I know.

I find it interesting the monorails have mirrors on them. You learn something everyday I guess

Honestly, what you just posted sounds more like an argument for a new updated fleet. Nobody is saying to throw immense money at the problem just willy nilly. The trains are many years past their expected lifespan, so it's not unreasonable to be wondering why the big delay. I mean, if they are so old that parts are hard to come by, that should say something right there.

Aren't the parks closing earlier than they have in a long time? Aren't PM EMH hours 2 hours now instead of 3? That should have already given them a little more time for maintenance.

If issues are happening at all, eventually don't you think they'll happen when people are on board?

Of course Disney wouldn't purposely operate an unsafe transportation system. But there are degrees of being "safe". And I do worry that Disney's desire to keep margins at such a high level might cloud the judgment of some managers when it comes to budgeting for maintenance.

Is this the first door incident? Or just the first one to be caught on video?

We just replaced our primary family vehicle. It was 12 years old. Parts are readily available. But there just reaches a point of diminishing returns. Where it's smarter to take the hit and spend the money than to keep throwing money at it fixing things and suffering through the inconvenience of service issues. And foolish to take chances with safety.

Unfortunately it's Disney's job to be one step ahead of their guests. They know not everyone is old enough to understand the dangers. Or careful enough. Or whatever enough. You can't rely on people to follow the rules. You have to be 100% certain your train will not be in motion with a door open.

I mean, come on. This is the company that put lap bars on Splash Mountain. They KNOW people do stupid things.

I meant to reply to this earlier. Oops.

This is a fantastic post.

However, as I implied before, I am absolutely shocked it needed to be said.

How Disney has treated their monorail fleet is absolutely indefensible. I know this is a discussion board, but for me, this is not up for discussion. Anyone who takes a different stance gets placed on ignore. The sensible ones among us shouldn’t have to waste our time defending the obvious.

Don’t know if you watched the video Kainsel posted, but in it, the former monorail worker said a new fleet will need to be purchased all at once. That would be the most economical route.

But is $250 million really that much? I mean, to us, yes. But to Disney? No, absolutely not.

I respect your opinion however again Disney does maintain these monorails. Yes they are old but as I posted earlier from a person very close to the situation they go through a full evaluation every 6 months. Should they be updated or replaced yes, but I feel you seem to believe Disney doesn't maintain them at all. If that is not the assumption then correct me. Ignoring those who simply disagree with you also doesn't seem like the right answer.

I have a hard time believing that a former monorail CM would know how a new fleet would need to be purchased. These are custom vehicles not something you can just go and get at the store. I know you have me on ignore I am just trying to clear up some misconceptions.

$250 million is a lot to any business even Disney.

Want to clear up something on the monorail inspections/evaluations.

Just like a car monorails get serviced every "3000 miles". They get checked daily, weekly, monthly, 6 months, year, and 18 months for various things. Every two years monorails are brought into the shop for a full tear down checking the trains.

Ok this is proposterous and out of line. Feel free to put me on ignore, but that’s completely ridiculous to ridicule Ryan, who does an incredible amount of work to this board, for simply stating his opinion. Do I always agree with him? Certainly not, but I’ve never felt personally attacked by him ever.
Yes, thank you rteetz for continually adding factual information into this thread as you obtain it.

I wouldn’t personally qualify what he’s done as trolling, but I’m sorry that you feel that way. I don’t even think that your opinions differ that much, besides that he’s just trying to offer the fact that the trains get looked at and that stuff happens. But to each their own.

I’m not trying to tell you how you should or shouldn’t feel by the way; but just offering my opinion from a third party perspective.
