Teacher handcuffed leaving school board meeting

Not sure a public board can set a topic for a public comment. The speaker picks the topic. They certainly could have not called on her, since they KNEW what she was likely to say. Or set a time limit of say 2 minutes, which is what is done at our City Council meetings. BUT, given what I know about the situation, the only wrong doing I see was by the Marshall. The ACLU has entered the situation.
Like I said before, she probably will get a settlement from the school district, from public funds. I suspect the Marshall will be fired. And the Marshall may get a settlement from the school district from public funds for wrongful termination.

Well they said they were not going to fire the marshall. But you never know. They may end up deciding to let him go with a golden parachute.

In the video I watched I can clearly hear the audience say that she was recognized and had the floor. The officer escalated this situation without cause and by doing so violated this woman's civil rights. I would see no problem with her seeking whatever legal remedy is available to her.

It is *very* unlikely that he did so on his own judgment, though. I've been at enough small town meetings to know that it isn't unusual for council or board members concerned about a particular individual or group to instruct officers to remove them quickly should they speak out of turn or raise specific issues, and I've never seen an officer refuse those directions even when I know the officer in question agreed with the person/group being thrown out. And the next step, IME, is that the "unruly" behaviour is used to discredit whatever the so-called "troublemaker" was saying... effectively allowing the council/board to avoid addressing the issue head-on.

Why bother having a public meeting if comments and questions aren't allowed?
Weird.

Because it is required, either by law or by the organization's charter. Our schools and city govts. all operate the same way - there is a public comment period, but the board isn't supposed to engage or respond to comments or questions. I'm not really sure what the point of it is other than to maintain an illusion of responsiveness; I've seen board members reading e-mails, texting, browsing social media, and once, dozing off during the public comment period at meetings. They're required to allow the public to speak, but apparently they're not required to listen.

Lots of people are including the very superintendent whose contract they were talking about. He said he wished he'd stood up for her and her right to speak. And yes, I am concerned.

That superintendent is just trying to do damage control. If he thought it was wrong he would have stopped it then. He didn't want to have to deal with the discussion being about his substantial raise with the precedent of nothing for other staff members for years. He's probably the one who directed the officer to escort her out. I loved his comment about him not agreeing with the officer, but that of course no plans to fire him....of course not, he did what you wanted and now you're throwing him under the bus. I hope this comes to bit him and the school board in the behind. If you watched the videos it was absolutely ridiculous.

Any chance of this becoming a movement to raise teacher salaries like the #metoo movement?
Doubtful it’ll matter here. I work for a school district in another parish (although I’m not a teacher). Teachers asked the board for a raise & they claimed they didn’t have the $. They said they would ask the voters for a mileage to fund it. They put it on the ballot in Nov & it didn’t pass so that’s that they said. This is an area where a lot of ppl don’t utilize the public school system b/c the school aren’t that great. So a lot of the residents don’t want to pay anymore for something they’re already not using. I don’t know much about the area where the video was taken, but that is a common problem in the metro NOLA area. Most ppl using the public schools are only those with no other choice so no one wants to fund the schools. But, that’s a cycle b/c then the schools just keep getting worse.

Teaching never paid great sums, but it was a good job, 25 years ago, when I started. Now, I would not recommend anyone go into it.

I made less in 2017 than I did in 2005. Now, I did move to a lower cost of living, but if we had to survive on my salary, we wouldn't make it. The pay here is HORRIBLE.

Local article said that he was sued in another jurisdiction when he was an officer there for excessive force when he slammed a 62 yr old man’s head to ten ground during the arrest. He settled out of court.

I just don't get it.

She left the meeting room.

Who cares if she stays in the hallway for an hour afterwards?

He can't stand there and wait patiently? Doesn't seem like it was his first day on the job.

I bet right about now he wishes he would have had a little more restraint and better judgment.

If he is the resource officer, I'd be nervous for my kids' safety.

Perhaps he should learn some breathing techniques to take that edge off....

My wife is in her first year of teaching.

I cannot believe the hours she has to put in!

Granted she gets 2 weeks sick time and more vacation time than I'll ever have, but her weekly workload is pretty crazy.

Teachers definitely earn their time off, and the pay does not make up for it. Even the benefits are not as great as I thought that they would be, at least price wise.

Colleen just nailed it in her post above...
Thank you Colleen!

And, good freakin' greif... I was wondering just how long it would take for this to become a forum for teachers and the entitled mentality that many of them have.
If the teachers in that district have truly not had a pay increase in many years and are grossly underpaid, the that is a valid issue, for THEM.
And, for them alone.

That certainly is not the case here, or in many other districts and or States.

And, there are those who equate this with what seems to be a widespread and accepted workplace situation for women (and men, too) who have been abused, and even raped....
Really?

Did you see the Marshall job is his side gig? His full time job is as a MINISTER! Actually cops who are ministers aren't rare, but they usually are more likely to talk someone down rather than slap cuffs on so quickly, at least in my experience.

I was waiting for this to turn into an anti teacher forum.

Bravo, you did it!

Why does everyone throw out the entitled tag in every single issue now? I think the first one to use it is the one with the entitled mentality......

And the issue is why a person spends the night in jail for asking a question and then leaving the meeting when asked. Not about their pay. That’s the secondary issue that’s been brought out by the mishandling of the situation by the Marshall and the board.

But I do feel entitled to not be pushed to the ground and arrested for asking a question. :)

And this is why I asked if this situation would do anything to help teacher's salaries improve. It has long been known that teaching is not a high paying profession, but come on no raise in a decade!

DH worked for the state of Mississippi for 23 years. He was finally able to retire. He hung in there long enough to draw his retirement. That has been the best perk of his 23 years serving the state. He went almost 10 years without a cost of living raise and took several pay cuts as the cost of insurance continued to rise. State employees in our state (who are required to have degrees for their jobs) are often not treated as well as teachers here and that's a shame and a bone of contention between state employees and teacher's unions. DH was in the same system as teachers and I think that's why teachers stay in our state--to draw the eventual retirement. So many long standing great teachers tell students not to become teachers because the age to retire has been raised and the working conditions have deteriorated, so it would now take 30 years to achieve any monetary benefit to waiting.

Sadly, our state is suffering a "brain drain" as kids get their degrees and move on to other better paying states. Even our 16 year old is making her exit plan. And the powers that be do not do anything to stem the tide. So when you see an official receive a substantial raise in a lower cost of living state, like Louisiana, yes, it makes eyebrows raise.

We had a chance last April to do a Capitol building tour in D.C. led by an employee of our State Rep. Both the House and the Senate were in session though the House was on recess when we were able to go sit in the room. The Senate was in full session (if you want to call 1 person in attendence full session lol). There was Marco Rubio speaking. Just before he spoke the member before him was speaking and when he was done he up and left the room (guessing he didn't care much at all for what topic Marco Rubio was going to be speaking about). So here was Marco Rubio speaking and the President pro tempore was there who did his part nodding every now and then and moving every now and then but I very much doubt he cared a huge ton about what the topic was by the mostly bored but attempting to not look bored look he had on his face (I'm sure he was wishing he had his cell phone or a computer to putz around on lol). It was sorta amusing though in a cynical way knowing that this is probably what occurs all the time on topics that may actually be quite important to us citizens. Also knowing that the transcripts of that day's topics are probably mostly skimmed at best by other members of the House or Senate.
