Would it be difficult for admin...

...to put in place a restriction on how quickly a new member can post? Either limit posts to one per hour for the first 10, or something like that? I don't know anything about running a board, but I've been a member of others with simimar restrictions. That would likely eliminarmte or reduce the spam they get all the time.

I get the spam it's annoying and frustrating as well as pot stirrers but I would think limiting new members on creating threads would send the wrong message to someone geniunely looking for help.

That means a new person who wants to get information or ask questions would have to randomly post on random threads in order to up their thread count in order to ask a question or to get information. The DIS can also be confusing to a new member who doesn't know how to navigate or find information.

The 10 post rule for avatar is arbitrary but it's also not necessary to functionality-it's just decorative so to speak.

Oh goodness yes it would be nice if some of these ideas were implemented, I bet the mods would appreciate it as well. (I especially like having to have posted a set amount of responses before being allowed to create a thread and either limiting the speed of new thread creation or having a captch for it for until a poster passes a certain thresho9ld (100 posts?).

There MUST be something that can be done becuase other large boardw sI am on don't seem to have nerly a big of an issue with bots.

There would be no reason for that if implemented correctly. A new poster would just have to complete a captcha to post the thread and would have to wait a set amount of time before posting a second thread. It doesn't have to be long, even a 5 minute window would reduce spam while not causing a great burden on a legitimate poster.

Yes that's true. I was responding to the poster who advised "get 10 posts in before being allowed to start a thread." That's why I also mentioned about the 10 post rule for avatars.

Captchas aren't an issue and wouldn't hinder a new poster at all so long as it wasn't a long delay in time in order to post a thread. Sorry for the confusion on what I was meaning.

If advice is that important such that someone can't wait 10 posts, it's probably something that the dis isn't going to solve.

That's one way of looking at it. I was looking at it more in the postive not negative way.

If prohibiting new posters from posting a new thread until they got 10 (or whatever number) of random posts in a sometimes confusing and at times hard to navigate forum ends up doing more harm than good it defeats the main purpose of this website which is to provide planning assistance towards Disney guests. I didn't even find the Test Board until I did my signature...which was long after I had been a member. I didn't find the DIS boards itself because I was looking for Disney lovers I found this board because of a post on a Pinterest pin when I was starting my planning for my Disney trip and I'm not one who frequents forums unless I'm googling how to solve an issue. For someone unfamiliar with how a forum looks, and how to navigate it's a lot easier and user friendly to create a thread and ask their question.

The captcha idea is a lot more practical and fair plus many people are already used to doing captchas/recaptchas..heck I can't even check my home depot gift card online without proving I'm not a robot by selecting all the tiles that reflect X (like vehicles, mountains, signs).

I'm guessing of course but in this situation I would see the cons outweighing the pros and benefits to forcing X number of posts in order to create a thread.

Just my opinion of course.

I wasn't looking at it in a negative way either. Waiting 10 posts isn't going to hurt anyone.
Apologies but your quote did seem at least somewhat negative. In terms of finding the website a new poster joined to be user friendly and helpful (and helpful is what I feel this website aims to be), taking a stance that all new posters (just to weed out the probable small number who are up to no good) need to find some way to post on some random thread(s) in order to reach X number of posts just to prove they are actually looking for help seems more con than pro to me at least. But proving you are not a robot on the other hand or that what you want information on is worth completing a captcha with the letters and numbers or tiles is quite a common request from many websites and most are already used to doing that for something on the internet.

At first, I didn't think so either...but then I thought about a completely new person coming here to ask advice on a first Disney trip. - They're not going to feel comfortable trying to answer ten other people's questions before they can ask their own, because they haven't been yet! So I think I like the captcha idea better.

From experience, modding forum software isn't all easy peasy. You need to mess around with PHP and more often than not, SQL of some flavour. And because of that, you run the inherent risk of breaking the forums. The very least you have to do is backup EVERYTHING - software, database and all. And given the size of the DIS, from posts to members to avatars to signatures, that would be a mammoth job and complete with testing would take hours of hard work. If the base system software doesn't support the feature in question, it may be more risk than it's worth to add the functionality.

I don't agree that someone should have to have 10 posts to start a thread. That could clutter up thread with people posting randomly or discourage new people from even beginning to partcipate.

Agreed. With a 10 post rule, you would start getting a LOT of random one word thread responses from these poor people who are trying to make 10 posts just so they can start a thread to ask a question. So unless you desire an epidemic of "Hi." "Agree". "Yes." "No." type of responses in threads, it is probably best to go with a captcha system.

There are a lot of people who only come here because they have questions about their Disney trips, not because they want to join a community. I know 10 posts may not sound like a lot for us veterans who spend a lot of time on here, but for people who just want an answer to their question, it can be an unnecessary burden.

When I first joined many years ago it was to ask a few questions regarding an upcoming trip. In order to get my 10 posts out of the way I went to the Welcome to the Dis area and welcomed 10 folks who posted there.
I was able to get my 10 posts out of the way easy peasy. I thought it was easy to do and no problem.

Clever!

I think it would be great if some of these ideas were implemented if for no other reason than as a deterrent for those who create new profiles to ask for advice "anonymously". If it takes a little more effort maybe there would be less of it.
