Disney World may discontinue resort's Monorail system? False report

..and it's an ABC Affiliated News Outlet???? odd

I'm a little surprised that news outlets are publishing articles based on Screamscape rumors :sad2:

Yes they're old but removing them before an alternative method of transportation is available immediately presents a value problem for the former monorail resorts.

I'd hate to see the monorail taken out-it's such an integral part of WDW. DS has been going to WDW since he was 7, now he's a father himself, and on the last trip he exited the MK and took his daughters on a monorail trip around, just because "it's all part of the experience".
We tend to stay at Fort Wilderness and for the first MK day of a trip we get up extra early for rope drop, take the little launch to the Contemporary, hop the monorail all the way around to MK. It certainly would be a wrench if someday in the future we could no longer do that ritual. I loved it as a kid, my kids love to do it now. While I don't think it's going anywhere any time soon, I do think it's unlikely my grandkids will experience that tradition.

With them discussing one or two resorts along the monorail line this becomes even more of an issue as the construction has to accomodate the monorails (or not). Frankly I think this would be the bst time to invest in UPGRADING the monorail lines to begin with. You're still going to need a transportation system around the "monorail" resorts and there will be too many stops to make the skyliner system carry the same loads.

Regardless- kill the monorail and you'll kill the monorail resorts. Not that anyone at Disney seems to care anyway, they've clobbered the service and the room quality/value is barely better than a Holiday Inn Express for 10x the cost. But nooo, they can't afford a new monorail system.

Frankly, if you're gonna do it- pay tribute to Walt and make a people mover track throughout the monorail resorts.

As soon as I heard the skyline announced I said that was the first nail in the coffin of the monorail.
Same here. Not sure about eliminating the monorail completely, but they could reduce hours of operation to mitigate wear and tear on the trains.

you would think it would cost a ridiculous amount of money to even remove it. not the trains i mean the concrete alone.

you think they would just toss the trains in the garbage piles of all the old attraction pics u see on the internet? just piled up next to the epcot mickey wand 2000 thingy? :)

This would be beyond awful. Many people consider the monorail their first ride, it draws in a decent amount of merch, and is about as iconic as the castle. Disney would be screwing up big time if this is confirmed

I have grandparents who live in Orlando and when they don’t know what to do or are sad but don’t feel like going to the park, they just go and take monorail rides. Idk just wanted to share

Plus it's one of those things that even they say Disney is thinking of lots of options ... I am sure there are thousands of things that they are always thinking about different options for - doesn't mean anything will actually happen

If the skyliner is successful I could see them replacing the EPCOT line with gondola - but I have a hard time seeing them ever getting rid of the MK loop
I agree, the Epcot line is pretty cut and dry and would be a simpler replacement with Skyliner. I’m very skeptical of the MK loop simply because the monorail passes through 3 resorts, the TTC, and MK and is a circular loop which I think would all pose problems. Not to mention it’s rumored the Epcot line is in rougher shape vs the MK loop

They left River Country to just rot, I'd hate it if they did that to the monorail beams.

Hmm... it's all just rumours and speculation at this point, but it does make me wonder if they're ultimately planning to replace the monorail system with a new Skyliner system.

I don't see them doing away entirely with some kind of cool, futuristic transportation for the monorail resorts. It's too big a selling point. But I could definitely see them swapping one for the other, if the Skyliner performs well.

Of course, it'll be a decade or more before we see any movement on this. ;)

I hope not. At least the monorail (probably) won't fall out of the sky because Disney was too cheap to maintain it properly. A small box held up high in the sky by a wire...that's a hard pass for me.

As soon as I heard the skyline announced I said that was the first nail in the coffin of the monorail.

I think the monorail is cool. It was how we got around when I was a kid and just two parks bit over the years using it has been more of a hassle. It’s quicker to walk to the mk from contemporary. When the parks close at night I am always so glad I’m hopped my on a bus back to akl. I remember waiting in line one night when my daughter was 13 months. Waited 1 hr to get on at closing and something happened and they had to bus us. Took 2 hrs to get back. She was a train wreck by then. Lol

If the monorail line is really long like that, you can take the Ferryboat instead. I've even heard, but have been unable to confirm personally, that they sometimes run a bus from MK to the TTC. One of the worst things Disney could do is just shut down the Express/Resort lines. They would be effectively dumping that entire crowd onto the Ferryboats on top of those who are already using the boats.

In the meantime, has Disney done anything to improve communication regarding whether or not the monorail is running?
On our last trip, we wasted so much time every morning trying to find a transportation CM to see if we would be taking the monorail or walking. I have a bad knee, so I prefer to ride to the parks and save my walking for when we have arrived.
It would be great if the resort could announce it on the resort channel on the tv.
Our next trip will be at the Poly. I’m guessing that the boat dock is nowhere near the monorail. I don’t feel like walking all the way to the monorail only to be turned away & have to walk across the resort to catch the boat.

Another very important thing to realize is that the monorail goes right through the Contemporary so there would be a lot of construction and disruption going on and I can’t see them possibly disturbing guests, dealing with issues, etc. so I feel as if at least the MK will stay

New to the magic kingdom, the aerial pathway in the sky. You and your loved ones can stroll to the parks, on the former monorail beam now turned boardwalk.

I'm sure it's conjecture based on rumor, but the day will come. What they do next will be interesting.

I don't see why a skyway would have any greater issue with capacity than the current monorail. A funicular could work in it's place as well. It would be a mess with down time, which I suspect is one of the contributing factors.

How about a PeopleMover from TTC to MK. :-)

Could they have had some "off the record" kind of confirmations of discussion but can't say that ... so putting it all on Screamscape?

Yeah ............. while I agree they would do everything to keep the one at MK ............. construction and disruption of guests is an ongoing, big issue for guests but no problem for Disney. If they want to take it out, they will and send you an email that work will be done 9 am to dusk.

It is not that far from the monorail to the boat dock at the Poly. Only issue is that they pick up at the GF first then Poly. The busses are close to the monorail stop. Just depends how fast they get busses there if the monorail goes done.
