Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Reaction and Discussion *CONTAINS SPOILERS*

I thought it was odd anyway they weren't sticking with december - seemsnlike it would make sense to just brand that as the Star Wars release month
I don’t think this movie in particular has the power to perform this time of year compared to the saga movies or even rogue one. Especially with all the issues they’ve had

Unfortunately I feel Disney is going to over saturate the market with SW
I think they’ve done a good job of staggering movies to one per year. As someone else brought up a while back, it’d be different if it was like marvel and they had 2-4 releases a year. Just my take however

Disney has done something the prequels couldn’t, ruin my enjoyment of the pre-existing franchise.

I hated this movie, wished I hadn’t seen it, and have no desire to see another Star Wars movie.

And I’m (was) a Star Wars nerd, saw the originals and prequels in the theater (never hated those unlike most, THEY were popcorn flicks), have a collection of memorabilia, and in the course of a couple of hours, 40 years of interest slowly drained out. I really can’t explain it any better than that. I didn’t think that was possible.

I think a movie a year is way too much

I think a movie a year is ok but I question how good these standalones are gonna be. Rogue one was excellent in my book but solo seems to be struggling in production, so I’m curious as to how the future ones will turn out.

I won’t talk about the saga movies quality because I know that’s sort of an issue of contention around here

As long as they can keep the movies varied enough I think one a year can be ok. With having the anthology films and sagas staggered it gives some difference amongst them. And having a new stand alone trilogy coming that will hopefully give something different as well.

I've been sick for the past week so watched every Star Wars movie I own (which is every one but the prequels). Empire Strikes Back remains my favorite followed very closely by Rogue One. I also really did enjoy The Force Awakens, even though it was a reboot in many ways. It still bothers me that we were set up to think that there was more to Rey than just being a nobody. All of those flashes of memories and seeing bits of the future when she touches Luke's lightsaber led us to believe that she was much more than this. We see a little girl who I presume is her being left on that desert planet and crying as she watches a ship flying away - which leads us to believe that her parents are on the ship. Hopefully the final movie will delve deeper into where she came from because I'm definitely not buying that she was abandoned by crappy parents who were nobodies.

Wow, everyone has such strong reactions! It's so so interesting to me as I am definitely a "non-star wars nerd person" who went to see the movie with my SW loving significant other. I loved it! He liked it a lot, thought it was visually great and he basically mulled it over the whole ride home while I talked his ear off about different theories of my own that I was forming.

I'll spare you those specific details, but my history with Star Wars is a bit different. I had probably seen a few here and there, but never sat down to watch them all. In high school I convinced a boy I liked to have an overnight Star Wars marathon (after meeting him in a special study hall while playing SW themed Risk! together) and we binged watched 1-6 along with Monty Python and about 10 other people. I haven't seen TFA or Rouge One....and I loved TLJ. I looked up theories the whole way home, read articles, listened to podcasts, and read this entire thread, amongst other bits of research.

I understand why people don't like it. I understand why they're upset. I also understand that the movie served it's purpose of ushering in a new generation of fans. I heard little kids in front of me gasping and laughing, and saying "wow" in awe at the silent scene, and babbling to their parents how much they liked it on the way out. It was interesting and while it felt long to me at some parts, I also had zero back story of TFA going in to it. I ended up watching half of TFA on a flight, and have been trying to find a way to finish it without caving and buying a new DVD (only because I just bought the entire Harry Potter Discography).

Short summary is that the 90/10 of casual fans and new fans and just general movie goers liking it seems to ring true IMO and in my own experience in seeing it on opening weekend with a major fan. Heck, it's made me interested enough to watch for details of the new hotel and experience that they're creating and insider rumors about the new land at DHS :confused3

Hopefully #9 wraps things up and answers some questions, but I am most interested in Rey's lineage and how my BF and I are going to make our Rey and Finn costumes for Halloween.

And with that, there was a movement in the Force as Bob Iger cracked a smile as that sentence was typed ;)

Glad you enjoyed it and sounds like a good shared experience with your SO

Still haven’t seen it, but plan to next week. I’m a big fan of the original trilogy. I’ll admit that I’ve been seeing spoilers and such, but looking forward to the new movie.

My only impression is that it sounds like the director wanted to make something less predictable. Didn’t want the typical outcome of the good guys vs bad guys movie. And this is key...somehow you needed to come up with a convincing story on what happened to Luke over the many years gap. That is the challenge when trying to come up with that story. Could have gone so many ways I guess.

Again, without seeing it yet...recall that in the original trilogy, it was the 2nd movie that presents the real struggle. Final movie has a chance to really shine (in the tone of Return of the Jedi) in some form or another. So I fully expect the 3rd in the new trilogy to be optimistic and bright.

Agree. 1000%. They've already done it according to some opinions.

Someone pointed out that marvel releases a few movies a year but it's different universes. I don't think the public will keep supporting a movie a year of the same universe.i have no doubt fatigue will set in no matter how good the movie is. Just my opinion of course.

The Marvel movies all take place in the same universe - The MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). They don't feature all the same characters - some are focused on one or two and then others have a bunch in them, but it is all the same Universe

It would be like having The Last Jedi come out the same year as a movie movie focused on other adventures of Finn or Poe or Maz something. The Marvel ones (for the most part) are even more connected than say, The Last Jedi to Solo or Rogue One as they take place in separate time period. All the Marvel movies are (roughly) in the same time period

Ok so I guess universe is the wrong word. Even starwars takes place in the same universe as marvel since there is only 1 but you know what I mean

And just to add fatigue has set in the pirates franchise. Fatigue has set in the transformers franchise. The same thing will happen to SW if we keep getting movies every year.

I guess I see it as the same as all the characters interact and takes place in the same area and the same time period, etc. and often appear in the same movie. At least with Rogue One and Solo it is different time periods. Other than the first Captain America all the Marvel movies are in the same time period (now)

I'm not saying fatigue won't set in if they keep going - especially if they add a live action show on the streaming network - but I just don't see how one could say they are flooding the market with more Star Wars movies than Marvel (which also has televisions shows on at the same time in the same universe, etc.)

And all the SW movies took place a long time ago. In a galaxy far far away... of course
