This week's episode had me question the CM room access

I think Disney’s reaction is well warranted and makes sense in light of recent events.
I completely disagree. One lunatic in Vegas bringing guns into his hotel room hardly justifies tens of thousands of hotel guests at Disney World losing the right to privacy in their rooms. It's the same wild over reaction that is behind us all having to take off our shoes at the airport - because one nut job tried to light his shoe on fire years ago.
If you're concerned about someone barging into your room, put the slider/deadbolt on when you're in the room. If someone comes knocking and wants access to the room
This is really the part that bothers me. Not the barging in part but the knocking part. If I have a Do Not Disturb sign out, that means DON'T KNOCK! I'm sleeping or showering or otherwise don't want to be disturbed. If the new policy eliminates that courtesy, I have a huge problem with that.

Therein lies part of the foundation of my question(s).

I don’t see how guests have lost privacy. I didn’t have any problems this past week at BLT and I was in the rooms at several different times during the day.

If you can no longer control when staff enters your room or at least attempts to, isn't that a loss of privacy?

We don't stay onsite so ultimately, this policy doesn't affect us - unless it spreads across the industry. We rent a home while at Disney so we don't really have to worry about someone walking in on us. We don't have housekeeping. Theoretically someone from the management company could walk in but in the 20+ years we've been renting homes, we've never had that happen.

I noticed zero change this past week while at Disney so I don't find it as a loss of privacy.

I think this whole thing is getting way over blown. It’s not like it’s the gustopo knocking down your door. Entry into rooms by resort/ hotel employees has been happening since the advent of hotel rooms. Your room wherever it has been is subject to entry regardless if it’s a rental. It’s quite possible that it has happened and you were never aware with no damage done. I don’t undersatand what everyone has to hide while on vacation that having housekeeping enter a room changes the game.

I have absolutely no problem with housekeeping coming in. I’m NOT okay with them eliminating the DND sign letting me limit WHEN they can do it. I don’t want them knocking when I’m asleep. Is that really too much to ask?

Nope

Projecting forward. What happens if we place the DND sign and there is a reasonable level or expectation of privacy but, there is an intrusion into your room. Although I may have not originally presented my OP clearly, this is my core concern. Should I always assume it is a CM or an unwanted intruder? What is the protocol for a CM when entering?

The way I thought/think it's SUPPOSED to work is - if "normal" access (cleaning the room if it''s supposed to have maid service, etc.) does not occur as "normal" (guest leaves for parks, CM enters on whatever the room service schedule is (I realize DVC is different), or is denied on numerous/constant instances, or there is some other reason for "due alarm" (kind of like probable cause), THEN they would utilize the "come to the door, KNOCK", then enter (maybe a "triage type" discussion would take place first to determine necessity, or if there is reasonable explanation if given), and/or maybe some sort of management position CM would be consulted first, prior to entry. I would think there HAS to be some kind of SOP regarding this whole thing. The whole "we can enter at any time" written on the DND tag is a sort of CYA, NOT what's is GOING TO HAPPEN IN EACH AND EVERY CASE.

Given that sort of general scenario (I've laid it out briefly, after quickiy thinking about it, so please - no flames if I've missed something) I personally have absolutely NO problem with it. I'd rather be safe than sorry, and can only assume that - barring something exceptional happening (accidents, and things DO happen - in ALL things, ALL the time, but they are the EXCEPTION, not the RULE) good judgement and etiquette would be used.

I"ll admit I've not read the other comments/forums about this, but could it be a question of "the internet losing its collective minds" as Pete always says? Blowing things WAAAAAY out of proportion?

I think the policy may be moderated as time goes by.

Assuming it’s a CM AND YOU HAVE LOCKED YOUR DOOR, barring a total shoulder to the door breakdown what is your concern?

I think what incited my OP, were the reports of CM's coming in during times when folks were sleeping, showering, etc. But, as someone else pointed out in this thread, those reports may have been false. Should we assume that the locks cannot be defeated by the CM's/others?

Not easily unless there is a reason to do so and even then security would be called upon.

How would someone who is not a CM gain access to your room if the door is closed?

Back to 100%. Nothing – NOTHING – is 100%. Your train on Space Mountain could careen off the track. You could choke on a churro. An alternate dimension could open up and trap you in It's A Small World. The odds of all those things happening, just like the odds of some rando breaking down your hotel room door, are so so so small.

Gosh, you'd read this thread and think there's been widespread reports of criminals bashing in doors at Disney hotels.

We've been in deep sleeps before where someone (hotel staff) came into our hotel room (DND sign was removed by pranksters unbeknownst to us). The reaction was scary for all parties involved.

If what you say is 100% factual, than that alleviates most of our concerns.
Despite our back and forth it’s obvious that you have some genuine concerns. My view point is that Disney has an incredible compelling reason to ensure the security of their guests. My recommendation is that if you have specific concerns that you you discuss them with the front desk ( not on the phone). The procedures recently put into place aren’t meant as an intrusion into privacy. In fact the only real change is to DVC rooms. Otherwise the policy is as it always was. Except for the DND sign but a locked door expresses the same.
