Account Charging Limit

Hi, All,

I haven't seen this posted lately, sorry if I have missed it.

We stayed at AoA January 1-7 with a family group of 12. When I checked in, the form for allowing room charges said our limit was $1500. That sounded about right, so I didn't question it. I planned to come down a couple times during the week to pay toward the balance with gift cards I had collected through the year and consolidated (yay Kroger 4X fuel points!).

We had a couple of character meals, and I have Tables in Wonderland, so of course I paid for them!

I was surprised on the third day when I got a notification from my credit card company that there had been a charge larger than my chosen threshold to receive an alert. It was for just over $900, which at the time I knew was the balance on our account.

I went down to the front desk that even to inquire why the card had been charged at less than $1500. The CM at the desk said that is what they do, charge when it reaches $900. I asked why I wasn't told that, and she said, "well, I tell my guests when they check in, sorry your checkin cast member didn't do that."

It really wasn't a big deal, because I had to combine charging and gift cards for the week in any case. She did offer to refund the charge, and use the gift card, but it would take a while to get the credit posted, and as I said, it wasn't a big deal which part of the week's charges I paid with gc and which I charged, so I just left it.

I'm just posting to let people know that at least at AoA, your card will be charged when your account reaches $900. I have no idea what the $1500 limit means, to be honest!

It's been a pretty common theme for them to run the charges once the guest has reached over 50% of the limit in only a couple days. It's something they should warn guests of, but they don't. The CM spoke to made up the $900 excuse.

As PP mentioned, it's not just AoA that will do this, they all do. Believe the only difference is the Deluxe are $2000. Reason is, if you have a limit you peg half of 2 days in to a 8 day trip they are going to want to run the charges, so as to not end up with someone who runs up a whole lot and can't end up paying.

Many guests never even see or sign that card any more (with online checkin/straight to room, etc) so they are totally unaware of what limit there is, much less that they charge if you hit 50% early in your trip.

Will the resorts not allow us to prepay with gift cards and pad our room account? I appreciate this post because we are planning to pay our room charges with gift cards as well.

You can't prepay with gift cards, but you can stop at the front desk any time during your stay to apply the gift cards to charges you've already made. Just make sure you do so the night before you check out (or sooner) because they process the room charges overnight on the last night of your stay so if you wait till morning, your credit card will already have been charged.

Thank you. I'll be super vigilant then.

I would have been absolutely fine with it if they had just told me that was their policy. The only number I saw and that was mentioned to me was $1500. If I hadn't seen any number, or hadn't spoken to anyone, I might've gone to the desk earlier to apply some gift cards. No harm, I just think they need to communicate their policies better.
