Star Wars Virtual Half Marathon

It's a pin, and I think it is $3.99. They put it and the 2017 KR training shirts on clearance at the end of the year. I had already purchased the shirt, and may have also bought the pin when I bought the virtual shirt today. Yes, I am a sucker for anything Star Wars.

It looked like a medal cuz of the long lanyard type thing

It's been confirmed that the X-Wing on the right side moves in a semicircle. People who saw the medal at Marathon Weekend confirmed it and I've seen multiple photos showing the X-Wing in different places on the medal.

I went back and forth for a few days on this. Eventually i ended up registering because why not, I am such a sucker for Star Wars medals. I signed up Friday 1/5/18 and ran 13.1 on Sunday 1/17/18. You don't have to send in results but if you do you can get this cool finishers certificate.

I also ran it straight, non stop and it ended up being a personal best and first time running a half under 2 hours as well. I am way too competitive with myself to do it any other way then it would have been, if we were at Disneyland. I ran LS and DS for a true Kessel in 2017 but I can't turn down Kessel #2. haha

I like that finishers certificate. Very nice. Like you I also ran the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs last year on each coast. I vote we call this year's Kessel Run the 14 Parsecs Kessel Run. Also like you, I could not resist getting Kessel Run medal #2.

I bit the bullet and registered for this. Really wish I could figure out a way to do Kessel Run, but that's not to be this year.

I plan on running the full 13.1 in a couple weeks during my regular long run day.

I signed up for this while I was there for WDWMW. I used the half during Dopey as my “official” run. I figured this was the only way I was going to get the Kessel medal since I have a terrible fear of flying.

How do you submit your time? Email RunDisney or someplace in Active? I put all our bibs and finisher certs in a binder and it'd be nice to include this.

There is no formal time submission. You click on the Finisher Certificate link on the rundisney.com event page and it takes you to a site where you enter your name and finishing time and generates the certificate for you.

I'm a sucker. I signed up. I know I'll run at least a training half sometime soon. Might as well get a medal!

Total sucker. I signed up for the virtual with the kessel, which signed me up for the dark side challenge. Rare year where it falls outside of tax season. So this will keep me running around tax returns and give me a nice reward immediately upon tax season and 80 hour work weeks ending. Stoked that this worked out like this. Most excited Ive ever been for a run, and thankful because after last year I have no plans to ever go back to California for anything ever again.

When I went out for my 8 mile run last Saturday, I thought to myself, "8 miles aren't going to run themselves and tax returns aren't going to prepare themselves either. Such is the price to pay for running a half days after the deadline." After using 2016 as a mock training run to see just what training for a race in tax season and running one days after the deadline and then spending 2017 in training for the real thing, I was looking forward to a training free tax season. Until I convinced myself that I don't know when future Dark Side weekends will take place as they could fall before or on the deadline itself. So here I am training again. For Star Wars races, I will do it.

Kessel run challenge sold out. How does that happen? Really Run Disney? Can't place another medal order in China in time?

I get what you're saying, but it may be that the number of additional medals they need to order is substantially greater than demand. For instance, if the manufacturer requires that they order 5,000 to get the price point they're used to and they only need 500 to meet demand.

When they announced the virtual half, they were very clear that the virtual race could sell out and not be offered at any moment. My guess is that they got enough registrations to cover available supply and it's too cost prohibitive to order more.

Got my 13.1 in this morning. Figured if I paid for it, I was going to do the full distance.
My tenative plan is to push my 12.5 mile training run for Dark Side up to 13.1.

I feel for runDisney on this one. I understand why some people want some sort of proof, but at the same time, sometimes proof can be two different things. For instance, the treadmill said I ran 8.46 miles last Saturday. For the same time period, my FitBit said I ran 7.25 miles. Which one is correct?

For training purposes it doesn't matter. I know that consistency in training accompanied with appropriate increases in mileage is sufficient to finish the race. But for virtual run purposes, it's a problem. For that reason, I don't fault runDisney for going with the honor system on this one. If someone wants to buy a medal and not do the work, it doesn't cheapen the accomplishment of anyone who chose to run. And since the Kessel Run medal requires finishing Dark Side within the standard runDisney rules, it's extremely difficult to buy the Kessel Run medal.
