Hippos and Tigers and Flowers, Oh My! - A Solo March '18 TR - COMPLETED 7/13 - Final Thoughts+New TR

I think it's maybe supposed to be like that Escher painting?
I've never seen that painting but I can totally get that! I hate to spoil anything for anyone but..................on one of the MK tours we took, our guide told us about the Winchester House thing. Doors and staircases that lead nowhere, but it could be a combination of both!

So, I'm going to do things a little differently. I know it's important for Zach to be able to post the "amazing experience" first, and since it was his idea to start with, I'm going to let him! :cutie: But...I also need to continue things on this TR to make sure I finish before we leave for Paris in exactly one month! So, I'm going to start posting Day 2, and once Zach is able to get to his posting, I'll go back and post the last bit of Day 1 (he had several days of touring before I even arrived, so had a lot more to post before the DAH night).

Day 2, Part 1 - Entering Flower and Garden!

My Plans for the day:
Spaceship Earth, FP 10-11
Mission Space, FP 11-12
Frozen Ever After, FP 12-1
See all the topiaries and gardens!
Food: Booths, Via Napoli 6:30

Oh and a heads up, I have at least 270 photos queued up for this day… so be prepared!

I woke up on the later side this morning, understandably considering I didn’t get to bed until 2am! I think my alarm must have been set for 9-9:30, because I have timestamped breakfast photos at 9:40.

And what was for breakfast? Well…Zebra Domes! Hey, I’m on vacation! I ate 2 and saved the rest for another day (though I would never end up eating them). I liked them more than my previous time getting them in September (where they turned into a melted blob before I tried them), but I still want to try them actually fresh (I plan to do a Boma dinner in December, so that will be my chance).

NDcopi1.jpg

I got to the bus stop around 10am, with an Epcot bus about to arrive. Overall, I didn’t have much of an issue getting a bus at AKL, it was the buses from parks to AKL that were an annoyance.

fdSQYna.jpg

I arrived at Epcot a little before 10:30, where I was greeted with a security line on the longer side (well, compared to September, though these were not nearly as bad as it could have been). Thankfully, it didn’t take too much time, though I was picked to go thru the metal detectors… (I tried to look busy re-zipping my bag, but I accidentally made eye contact with the security person who directed me to the side.)

The entrance lines were also pretty long, so I actually utilized the AP entrance. While there were more people in the AP line, it went much faster than the regular lines! I did have to flash my AP card (I lost my slider shortly after I got it… I think Ollie (annoying cat who I love to death) knocked it under a piece of furniture)

And now, it was Flower and Garden! I was so excited since this was a driving factor in planning this whole trip!

One thing I was disappointed in was the lack of photopass photographers around. I definitely stopped whenever I saw them, but I was really hoping for many more, especially with the gorgeous topiaries. So, unfortunately a lot of my photos will be annoying selfies! (And I later realized there was some dust on the selfie camera, so until the afternoon, most of these aren’t too good)

SGo8WTg.jpg

I did find a group of PPP standing around past the topiaries, so I had to stop and ask them to take my photo, also sort of annoying! But I got my first Magic Shot of the festival, with the Orange Bird taking a break on my fingers!

First ride of the day, Spaceship Earth! I was well into my FP time, and there was a longer lineup for this one (at least longer than my last one, where it was a literal walk-on with plenty of empty cars (that’s what a hurricane will do to you!)

Though there was a kid behind me in the FP line complaining to his parents – does anyone every really want to go on this ride? I turned and just said, it’s a classic! His dad chuckled and the kid stared daggers at me!

I also attempted taking more low-light photos, most of which were too blurry however. Guess I need to figure out how/if I can take motion shots with an iPhone 8!

I ended up filming my future, though I think I picked the same choices as last time, so same result. Next time I will need to pick the opposite! I also made a silly face at the camera, which didn't turn out that well…

As I got out of Spaceship Earth, I definitely got a bit overwhelmed with crowds and so much stuff to see and do… I was also hoping to meet up with Zach again that afternoon, and was just trying to figure it all out!

O8e9fLy.jpg

First, I did see a PPP in front of the Donald, Hewey, Duey, Louie topiary. Ducktales is my favorite, so I definitely wanted this one! It did get annoying though when other people would just come up and stand in the shot, so the PP had to keep shooing them away; a common occurrence on this trip!

I like the butterfly magic shot, but it sort of blended in with the flowers behind me!

Made a stop for Stitch

And into Mousegear to get some Flower and Garden merchandise. I wish they had the festival center again this year, because it just would have been more convenient!

Admired this Hawaiian inspired shirt, but that wasn’t on my list .

I ended up getting these 2 shirts, an ornament, and a pin

I considered the Flower tumbler, but decided against it, since it was basically the Enchanted Rose version but with a purple flower instead of red.

And, my favorite purchase, Flower and Garden ears! (I forgot to take a photo of the whole display, so this is from a google search) But I would end up wearing them all day, so you will see them a lot! And I've worn them to Disneyland a lot, so if you've been following my PTR, you can see them there!

I also checked out some of the garden figures, which I would consider…if I had a garden…and the money!

Cont.. Gardens gardens gardens!

I love the Orange Bird magic shot!

You got some cute photos with and of the topiaries so far!

Those F&G ears are sooo pretty! I would have found it hard to resist those myself!

(I tried to look busy re-zipping my bag, but I accidentally made eye contact with the security person who directed me to the side.)
LOL LOL I ALWAYS try to avoid eye contact at all costs! My go-to is to be talking to Jimmy about something "important" while I'm usually muttering, just keep walking, just keep walking LOL

OK catching up! I have actually had to work at work the last week! How Rude!

The late night at MK looks like so much fun! Reminds me of how it was back in the day where you paid for extra magic hours! it was only $20 a person then (2001), but the parks were so empty! We went on Space Mountain and Splash like 8 times in a row! It was great! We did not get free treats though! I probably would eat my monies worth in Ice Cream at that event now lol. I love ice cream.

Loving all your Flower and Garden shots already! I am getting so excited for my trip (15 days!). I agree that butterfly shot is cute, but I didnt even see them until you pointed it out. Also agree Spaceship earth is a classic, but I could see how a little kid would not like it.

You HAVE to avoid eye contact with those security guys or they will get you!! I try pretending I don't know they exist but it doesn't always work :scratchin

One thing I was disappointed in was the lack of photopass photographers around.
I noticed that last month also. Last year it seemed they were all over and we got lots of PP shots. I barely saw any in March. Since next week it'll just be Steve and I I'm hoping to see more out and about because it's easier to get pictures without the boys anyway.

His dad chuckled and the kid stared daggers at me!
LOL!

I love the Orange Bird shot, too!

I ended up getting these 2 shirts, an ornament, and a pin

I bought that first shirt too!

We could never get a picture with Duck Tales topiaries. People were always crowding in front of our shots. At least you PPP shooed them away.

We actually bought this statue. It was a random decision. He did fit in the van on the way home. I was worried about that. So far it sits on a shelf in our house. It isn't very heavy, so I worry about it out in our garden. We live in Kansas, and it can be very windy!

Thanks! I definitely took a ton of photos, so get ready!

I know! I'm usually good, but this time I looked up at exactly the wrong moment! At Disneyland it doesn't matter because all adults go thru the scanners (an no bag-free lines; at least not normally, sometimes they do have them).

OK catching up! I have actually had to work at work the last week! How Rude!

I have you have a great trip! I wish I could have been at WDW back in the day of low crowds, but I guess that ship has sailed!

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who felt that way about the lack of PP. I hope you guys were able to take a bunch of shots!

Love the Orange Bird pic! And your shirt... Yet again perfect for the day!
Thanks! I found it on Teepublic because I was looking for a Disney "flower" shirt, and this one was the best option!

I bought that first shirt too!

They are pretty adorable!

Oh yeah, I can imagine the wind would not be good! And besides, now you can see him all the time, not just when you're outside!

Late to the game, but caught up and following along now. I also look forward to hearing about Paris next month.
Welcome! I can't wait to leave! Less than 4 weeks!

Day 2, Part 2 Gardens Galore!

After spending lots of money, I took the East exit from Mousegear and checked out the Purple Martin Nesting garden, which was very very colorful! I think if I ever have a house with a yard, I will try to get lots and lots of colorful flowers like this! Though I was confused about what the actual nests looked like (and didn't notice them until a guide pointed them out at AK the next day). I wish I could have done the special new Backstage tour for AK's 20th anniversary where you can actually check into the nests, but it wasn't being offered yet!

I then went across the walkway to check out the Water Wise Garden, definitely an important topic in California, with the almost-permanent drought we are in! :offtopic: Don't know if anyone read about that, but we had a 5-year drought until last winter when it rained constantly! Like serious rainstorms weekly, which was enough to officially end the drought. But of course, we yo-yo'd back this past summer/fall/winter with hot, dry conditions, and it looks like we're back in one. I don't know if we'll ever fully recover, and expect it's the new normal, rather than a temporary condition. Disneyland has been good though about trying to replace lush foliage with drought-friendly plants to reduce their water consumption, so the tram driveway from the parking structure to main entrance looks very similar to the 3rd photo.

I think this wall is just full of Hidden Mickeys!

OL1h4El.jpg

11:40 and it was well into my next fastpass, so I continued to Future World East, making a pit stop for a PP in front of Buzz. The photographer was also into the sitting Mickey/Minnie magic shots, but would end up taking the people over to an empty bench, rather than sitting on the ledge in front of Buzz. That would mean other people kept swooping in and took their own photos in front of Buzz and were giving her attitude about moving so people could take PP! These 3 girls decided they needed to do a whole photoshoot, and after the 2nd one, the photographer had to shoo away the last girl so I could get a photo! And they actually rolled their eyes at me (when literally all I did was go and sit down on the ledge)! So rude!

Anyways, I did get to see some of the flower and garden crew coming around, and they were watering kid’s shoes, which was cute!

Ok, next stop, Mission Space! (on the Orange side)

dZY5W8L.jpg

Because I was a single rider, they pulled me up the center aisle, but I guess the room they were filling got totally fully without me, so I had to wait for the next round. I ended up getting the Engineer, again very fitting!

SWqcrOK.jpg

When I got off, I was definitely feeling a bit queasy. I mean, it was about noon, and all I had to eat was 2 zebra domes. So, I pulled out a bottle of coke and sat down in the shade a bit. I took that opportunity to pull out my Flower and Garden Map and mark down all the things I needed to see. It helped, so everytime I saw a topiary/garden, I could check it off. I wish I had taken a photo of that map, it was so destroyed!

Anyways, it was into my next Fastpass window (again), but I also knew, I needed to get something to eat, and I wanted to finish Future World before I headed to World Showcase…

I made a pit stop … get it? … at the Cars area. I think families with little kids could certainly appreciate that little play area! And if I wasn't rushed, I totally would have sat for a while!

I continued down the side path, admiring the floating gardens…

And came across something I didn’t see on the map, Paint a Rain Barrel! I don’t know if that’s something they were just doing temporarily, or what, but it was cute. Basically they had stencils taped to rain barrels and lots of bright colors to paint them. I made a flower… please excuse my sloppiness, it is difficult to paint while bending over at a weird angle!

I then decided to check out the butterfly area. Unfortunately I did spot a crushed butterfly on the path, so told a CM who was able to quietly brush it onto a cardboard and take it outside to leave in the bushes.

And the children’s play area (the structure is for kids 12 and under, the other side is for “kids of all ages” with some music instruments, games, and other plants). I liked the sensory garden, where you could smell, touch, hear plants. The spiral one was fun to run my fingers through!

I had quotes, but they disappeared!!! Gah!

Your pics are beautiful. I have only been to Flower and Garden once, on our Babymoon, and it was just SO incredible--pictures just don't do it justice. The how-to garden and sensory gardens are additions I hadn't known about. I really loved the butterfly garden area--it was Tinkerbell themed when we were last there--and how cool that you got to paint part of a rain barrel :) I hope they put it out somewhere in the parks!

More great photos! The paint a barrel is such a fun thing!

The Daisy/Chip& Dale topiaries are sooo cute!
Yeah, Flower and Garden is just gorgeous! So many beautiful flowers and details! And I loved the food - more so than Food and Wine!

For the rain barrel, it looks like they only had them out the first weekend, so I was lucky to find it! They were recycled Florida Coke syrup barrels and are going to be all around Orlando/Orange County (http://attractionsmagazine.com/brighten-a-barrel-rainwater-epcot-2018-international-flower-garden/) I guess it is a whole green initiative from the Orlando mayor. Even though I didn't get a chance to paint the murals for Festival of the Arts, this was fun!

I got to see the F&GF back in 2010 and haven't seen it since. It seems a lot of change. As if it were possible, it got even prettier and more interactive. Also, don't feel bad at a messy stencil job, that's what stencils are for lol And that's so sad about the crushed butterfly. So awful someone would do that or just not pay attention enough. Glad to hear that was the only one death you saw in there. :thumbsup2

I’m catching up, the DAH looks so fun, sure wish we would have made one this year. The F&G is my favorite festival. We didn’t see the rain barrels to paint so I think it was only there a limited time, maybe?? I love the merchandise yo bought.

Hi Lesley, I just finished your last trip report and I'm all caught up on this one. I'm really enjoying your pictures of Flower and Garden. :)
