Latest School Shooting

For those of you that live in the area, I've been trying to contact a friend who lives in Alvin to see if her grandchildren are OK but am not getting a response. Her grandchildren live in the Dickerson area and Alvin. Would those towns be in the SantaFe school district?

Praying for all.

I agree. The money will be found, but what will be lost as a result?

I'm sure the arts, AP programs, afternoon school programs, professional development ...will be on the chopping block. The teachers in states without strong unions can say goodbye to raises.
To save lives?

I dunno.

I mean, there are many grammatical errors in the Constitution that lead to confusion. For example, look at all of the commas in the second amendment. Heck, one of them separates the subject with its verb.
It's astounding how incomprehensible the entire document is. The Founding Fathers use of semi-colons was atrocious!
Do you listen to the podcast Revisionist History? They did one on punctuation issues with the Constitution yesterday!

So from my news information there is a suspected accompliance age 18 with the main suspect age 17. The suspect obtained the guns from his father (who owned them legally) though it is unknown if the father knew his son had the guns.

As far as the news goes the guns involved were a shotgun and a .38 revolver. I mention this since enough DIS threads focused on AR15s.

The news information did say there were possible explosives found on and off school property.

The reason states do not allow drinking until age 21 is due to drunk driving deaths. Who killed anyone voting
Voting is how you put the politicians in place to make laws governing how to control and prevent catastrophes like this.

I mean, can we be a little reasonable here? Teachers have to provide the most basic supplies for their classrooms, like pencils and paper, and people really think there is untapped financial assets to outfit EVERY school with metal detectors and a couple full time armed guards?

And to those who say it is worth it to sacrifice some programs to protect the students, I just can't get behind that perspective.

Why punish potential victims to make it more difficult for a shooter when we could make it more difficult for the potential shooter to lay his hands on a hugely destructive weapon? It is like saying women should wear chastity belts to prevent attacks from rapists. You don't go after the victims or potential victims.

"Sorry we had to cut music and art, but hey, look at that metal detector."

And, what's next? After shooters are deterred from public schools? Private schools? Malls? Churches (already a target)?

The issue isn't the safety of the schools, it is the ease in which it is for a deranged individual to get such destructive weaponry.

I hope your friend's grandchildren are alright {{hugs}}. Please keep us posted.

I will bow out of this thread. Same argument and counter-argument every time, never a conclusion except WE GOTTA DO SOMETHING, and that something never comes.
How about one thing from each camp?

More stringent background checks and an off duty police officer at each school?

Then as time goes on, we keep adding one idea from each camp until we've eradicated this. It doesn't have to be one way or the other.

In the past 30 years, 150 kids and adults have died in school shootings. To put it in perspective, 1600 children die EVERY year in car accidents. Nope, not in favor of throwing millions of dollars at this, especially at the expense of education. Media induced fear makes folks think rare events are likely events.

ONE death as a result of tonnes of school shootings is too much

Ha! It was 98 in my room yesterday. I don't have heat in the winter. No way they're going to put in metal detectors if they don't give us heat or A/C.

"Sorry we had to cut music and art, but hey, look at that metal detector." I retire at the end of next year. I know if they don't replace me (instrumental music), they have to hire 2 teachers to take on the class load. Or in reality they'll maybe hire one and then make class sizes 40-45.

And, what's next? After shooters are deterred from public schools? Private schools? Malls? Churches (already a target)?

We need mental health as well as other solutions that are cut from budgets.

I'm against solutions that breed more fear and don't address the issue. Interviews with mass killers show a desire to make a mark on the world, to be known for what they are going to do. The more these events are talked about and covered in the press and online the more copycats will be inspired. Take away that notoriety and you reduce that motive. Do not publicly name suspects. Minimal coverage. No news specials.

Also better gun control. Mandatory background checks, Limit access to all types of semi-automatic guns. I hunted with a bolt action rifle no need to pop off 50 rounds.

And, for clarity, my username "SgtTibbs" is just what my kids took to calling me on WDW trips due to my proclivity for planning and keeping a schedule. I am not military or law enforcement.

In this particular school shooting, the shooter used a shotgun and a .38 revolver. Limiting semi-autos in this particular case wouldn't have stopped him.

No one would argue against that fact.

There is a difference though in treating something like it's statistically high when in reality, while horrific when it happens, it is not at this present moment significantly high to counterbalance some of the overhauls people here and elsewhere have proposed.

New amendment:
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear puppies, shall not be infringed.

So who is gonna pay for these puppies? Who is gonna spay them, feed them? Can't be done in my district.
Sorry, really quitting this thread now.:flower3:

Yeah, here’s the car argument..right on schedule.

If you want to make that comparison, let’s do this...licence and registration to own a gun (just like a car), pass a test to own a gun (just like a car), loss of licence if proven you are unsafe (just like a car), registry of all gun owners (just like cars).

Great idea!!
