A Successful September-W.I.S.H. Goals

Motivation Monday

After just losing 20 pounds, I'm pretty much in the pants falling off phase. My jeans all still fit when I first put them on, but get progressively looser as the day goes on, and by the end of the day I don't have to even unzip them to take them off. I'm sure I'm looking pretty sloppy, so I do need to do something soon.

Saturday I easily got my steps in, running around doing errands and the such. Sunday I also spent a good deal of time sitting/knitting watching football. I'm not sure how the Seahawks kept the score close because they didn't seem to be playing all that well. Plus, with one of the premier quarterbacks in the league I don't understand why we don't invest in a front line to protect him... but that's just me.

It's a full work week this week, except that Wednesday afternoon we go the the baseball game. It's supposed to be rainy, so the roof will be closed... better that than the smoke that was so heavy the first time we were supposed to go. There are a couple challenges laying ahead this week, but over all it should be a good one.

Edited to add: Over the weekend I watched the CNN special on Ruth Bader Ginsburg - holy cow! I really didn't know a lot about her at all... I highly recommend watching it. Today I'm facing a challenge with someone at work who's, well, kind of a jerk even on his good days and the past two days has been down right awful. I'm navigating my way thru using my "How does it get better than this?" and "What else is possible?" mantras, but also RBG's advice to never get angry. And both are really helping.

****Topic for Tuesday ****

I read a very interesting article over the weekend about restaurants including calorie and nutritional information on their menus.
The article pointed out calories shouldn’t be the only criteria used for because something lower in calories might be not as satisfying or as good for you as another item with more calories. They also made the point that type of information is stressful for people with eating disorders.

Here is the article:

https//:www.cnn.com/2018/09/08/restaurant-food-calorie-counts

What do you think? Does the nutritional info on menus help you when eating out?

I appreciate having the information-I might still order the higher calorie item, but eat half of it or share with someone. Or I compensate with my next meal, eating something light. I’m sorry if it stresses out someone with an eating disorder, but chances are eating out is going to be hard for them anyway.

Is there anything in your closet or something that you would like to wear that you’re using as motivation?

I have a really cute suede leather mini skirt that I got 20 years ago and haven't been wearing it in the last 16 years or so. I am not sure whether I really would want to wear it again (it's very short!!), but I for sure want to just be able to put it on again. I was a slightly heavy child and an overweight teenager. In my 20s I got my act together and lost a lot of weight and looked great. The skirt was bought as kind of a celebration of being able to wear the same exciting clothes that my friends all did. That's why it means so much to me.

What do you think? Does the nutritional info on menus help you when eating out?

Yes and no. Part of the problem is that when the info is available you raealize that there is nothing on the menu besides a salad without dressing that you can eat with a clear conscience and then it is just frustrating. On the other hand the info often helped me identify hidden traps and the food that you thought might be a good choice turned out to have far more sugar and fat than you thought it would. I find it interesting to see that often dishes at a restaurant seem to have much much higher calorie counts than the same if I buy it at a super market or make it myself. I am sure part of this is due to portion size, but I find it so difficult to stop eating if something delicious is in front of me...

If it's there I do look at it, as it can be very educational. But I totally agree it isn't just about calories but about the nutrition gained from those calories. I have been logging my calories in my FitBit, so I'm looking things up even if there isn't anything on the menu... I've caught myself a couple times thinking I can freely eat something because it's gluten/sugar free but then realize it's still packed with calories.

Yesterday turned out OK, I managed to navigate my way thru with some potential solutions, instead of getting stuck in a face off with the jerk. Today is pretty much back-to-back meetings which is stressful because it feels like I'm not getting any work done, I just need to keep reminding myself that meetings are work.

Flossbolna, you pointed out that you can often fix something at home for less calories-portion size affects that for sure and I’m thinking they use more butter, oil, etc. One reason I’d rather cook myself is it seems silly to pay twice as much for something I can make at home that tastes just as good-I find using good ingredients require less seasoning as well.
And you go ahead and wear that suede skirt! It’s back in style and I bet it looks great on you!

Down 3 lbs today!

"What do you think? Does the nutritional info on menus help you when eating out"

Before this new lifestyle I'm trying to embrace, I hated the nutrition info in the menus. I didn't want to see how bad I was going to be! And it did nothing to help me make better choices.

Now, I really like having the nutrition information available. It helps me plan ahead of time what I want to eat so I can make better choices. I still don't necessarily want to see it when I'm sitting in a restaurant, but I appreciate having the info. We like to eat at non-chain places and I get a little frustrated when I don't have any information.

I like having the nutritional info but it is a bit discouraging to see the calories of everything!! Like others, I try to compensate later in the day or the next day. Or I just chalk it up to a special treat and move on!

Today I dipped into the chocolate jar at work. My boss walked by and commented that I must be stressed! Well, yes, but it was still within calories. Things are still stressful at home and I thought it would be resolved last night but it wasn't. It's out of my control so I'm trying to let it go and not worry. Maybe tomorrow. I did sleep last night and that was a big help. So was yoga. I'm feeling better!

:cool1::cool1::cool1: Woo-hoo Wednesday is here! Let’s share some of your successes and other good stuff going on in your life!

Woohoo...
Yesterday I had gluten and refined sugar in the first time in several weeks, due to a special event and getting stuck in a lunch time meeting... I woke up in the middle of the night with a stomach ache, but the scale was OK this morning.

Yesterday I had an "energy clearing facial that is better than a face lift" with the gal who did the foot bath... it was pretty amazing, and I came away with a lot to process.

It's a short work day today, because we have the baseball game this afternoon. There's a lot going on at work but I'm kind of in the mind frame of just walking out the door and letting it all go. And a couple of us are going to walk from the office to the stadium, which is a mile and a half so I'll have lots of steps for today.

I am going to try to get a walk in before it starts raining (again-I think I have moss growing behind my ears). I have been pretty dedicated to getting out even in 90+ degrees -this is a change for me and I think has been helpful with weight loss and my clothes fitting better. And best of all, I enjoy it. Once our beautiful fall weather gets here I will enjoy it even more.
We’re going away for a few days, so will shift to maintaining.

We are having a our staff retreat at work today. it will start at about noon and go until about 3 or 3:30 and then we get out early. Lets just hope there is nothing competitive this year. Last year I was in a group with a co-work who is as competitive as me and we gave a new working a panic attack before we even left the building. Then we ran all over downtown for the scavenger hunt to only lose to a team that took pictures of a picture instead of going to the place. it was not pretty. I also over worked myself and almost puked several times and then pulled my hamstring.

I am also woohoo that the rain has stopped and I got in a nice but boring walk in last night. It was at DS's soccer practice so i basically paced the sidewalk of the school. This morning we got up and got 38 minutes of a walk in before work. I am feeling good today.

Oh, I hope the weather improves soon! Which area are you from? You might have mentioned it already, sorry if I forgot!

That sounds scary!! Hope this year's event will be better!

My woohoo is that I dared to step on a scale. I was secretly hoping for a lower number, but it is still ok. I know I put on weight during vacation and I am back to my pre-vacation weight. I also am really happy with myself that I am still sticking with my exercise schedule! I do feel quite a bit stronger already!

I'm ordering new carpet today!!! Major Woo hoos!

Also, I realized this morning that I'm feeling better. I don't remember feeling bad, but yesterday was the first time in a while that I really wanted to go out and play soccer with my son. Mayne all of these fruits and veggies I'm eating are.good for my body :)

We live in Pennsylvania-north east US-I really shouldn’t complain, the
Carolinas and Georgia are bracing for a hurricane.

It was much better. We just played trivia. Still competitive but not as bad. They did forget it was my 10 year anniversary with them. So my boss that started 6 months after me got a gift and I didnt. My team made sure they knew. And they felt horrible. Me, well I was just excited I didnt have to get up in front of everyone.

I feel the same. I have been complaining about our crappy weather too. I know we have it good right now compared to the Carolinas but it still stinks. We finally have nicer weather today. I saw the sign for the first time in like 5 days.

I had lunch with a friend today, and she was telling me about how concerned she was that her daughter (who is 35 years old) has gained quite a bit of weight and has terrible eating habits. The daughter has just been prescribed medication for a pre diabetic condition. My friend was asking my opinion as to whether she should talk to her about her concern.
Well, my advice was a pretty definite no-I told her she knows she’s not at a healthy weight and if she’s not ready to make changes, you’re just going to make her unhappy and cause problems between the two of you. I think she saw my point and she agreed to not say anything right now.
When I was at my heaviest weight, my mother, who I loved dearly, would say things like “if you want to join WW or try Nutrisystem, I’ll pay for it”. I know she meant well, but I wasn’t ready, and it just frustrated me. I finally had to speak up and tell her how I felt.

So for today’s topic of conversation-Did you ever have anyone in your life bring up your weight to you?
How did it make you feel? What did you say to them-or wished you had said to them? Do you think there’s ever a good reason to talk about weight with someone?

Wahoo we get to be the caretakers of my niece's six year old twins! It's a mixed wahoo but a major, major life change for everyone. Now my stress level can decrease and I can go into getting everything ready mode. We are empty nesters so there's a lot to do to prepare for two little ones. It's always fun to move furniture. NOT!

I'm sure this must have happened when I was younger and still under parental care, but at that point it pretty much was their responsibility... I can't think of anyone doing that since childhood. I rarely bring anything up that the other person isn't already talking about, so I don't see myself initiating that type of conversation specifically about weight. But if I was really concerned I might just start inviting that person to do healthful things with me, like going for walks or taking an exercise class, and see if they are interested.

I ended up with 20,000 steps yesterday... in my current step challenge, the leaders seem to get about 15,000 steps in each day and by the time I got home I was at 17,000 so I thought I'd just keep going so that I could be at the top of the leader board for a little while. I'm still hanging on to the top spot this morning.
