This Is Us- Season 3

It was nice to get a glimpse of Toby as a kid and as a younger adult. I'm also glad that it wasn't just a Toby episode, that they added more to the various storylines as well. Definitely an interesting twist in the Jack Vietnam era story. Like others have mentioned, I honestly think that all the stress of life is just getting to Beth, as I would imagine it would. She's held a lot in over the year.

Truthfully as much as I like Randall, from the spouse's perspective he's a workout. From the flashback of Beth with William it seems William keyed in on how easy it would be for Beth to become overlooked and depleted.

Based on several of the glimpses we've had of the formative years of the Pearson kids and things that Kevin addressed in his rehabilitation last year I think Kevin is uniquely positioned to have a very interesting conversation both with Beth and Toby and with Randall and Kate. It's been acceptable to label Kevin as self centered, some of which he owns up to, some of which he's been saddled with simply because his whole life it "looked" like he had it easier. I kind of wish he'd drop a truth bomb on Randall and Kate to get through to them that their hurts aren't any more special than everyone else's and maybe they owe it to their partners to get over themselves and see beyond the ends of their own noses every now and again.

ITA - Randall has been all over the place and keeps veering off in different directions and Beth has mostly just smiled and let him do his thing. It's due time she snapped and gave herself a chance to breakdown.

What in the world does Beth’s sadness over losing a job she had forever that was important to her have to do with early Alzheimer’s? That would be without fail the dumbest story line this show has EVER done, bar none.

This makes far greater sense and is way less crazy than early-onset Alzheimer’s in one’s thirties.

Yes, that is what I meant. If she’s having memory problems now that’s the beginning of the disease. And she’s in her late thirties. That is just so far out of the realm of ridiculous.

There are people in the world who do suffer from super early onset Alzheimer’s. I read an article about a family once. But it’s extremely rare and very much a huge genetic trait in the family. Randall would have known he was marrying and having kids with someone very likely to have the disease in the prime of life. Beth would be aware as well.

Good grief I can’t even believe I devoted so much thought to something so shark jumping and implausible.

It sounds like you have some large issues and bias with the Alzheimer's thing, and I'm sorry or anything you've dealt with in your personal life, but this is just a fun thread for those who like to discuss the show, so all thoughts and theories are welcome...it's part of the fun of the thread. I'm sure you didn't mean to, but your posts came off very condescending and demeaning towards the original poster (FWIW, I personally don't think it's that far fetched, not that it reallymatters, as we should all be respectful of one another.) The other poster did nothing wrong by stating what they thought it might be. It's totally fine to disagree with someone, but I dont think we should be making comments that imply ones thoughts are dumb, ridiculous, crazy etc.

What I have a major issue with is everyone jumping on huge diseases the minute anything at all happens in this show. When Randall has his breakdown it was “OMG RANDALL HAS PARKINSONS. HIS HANDS SHOOK”. Now it’s early onset Alzheimer’s. It can never be the simplest and most relatable explanation, it has to be some big disease.

Wait, Annie wasn’t in the flash forward. Maybe it’s because she has died of childhood leukemia! After all, I’m sure she had a bruise once. It’s a clue.

It’s morbid and frankly the opposite of fun.

I did say the same thing a few posts ago, all theories are welcome.

That being said, I agree that it does seem far fetched to jump to Alzheimer’s at this point

I appreciate the defense. My logic was, she got fired unexpectedly. She's in the interview, and either chokes up or loses her train of thought (I haven't re-watched, maybe it would be clearer with a second viewing). It made me think, maybe she's having problems with memory--she's was missing things at the old job, which got her fired, and then forgetting what she was saying in this important issue. Now, it may be nothing, it may be a brain tumor (all sorts of weird symptoms, depending on location)--I probably went to Alzheimer's because I've dealt with it, albeit in older people.

I also want to point out that some people are acting like TV is completely realistic. How many times, this show included, have we seen people run into burning buildings without turnout gear, and come out looking fine? Being former firefighters/EMTs, the running joke in this house is death scenes where the patient is wearing a nasal canula--a clear sign that they will have lines before they shuffle off this mortal coil. The reality is, in most cases, someone that close to death would have a non-rebreather mask instead, but that would muffle the lines, so it doesn't happen. My point is, TV is full of unlikely scenarios, miraculous recoveries, and chance meetings. Why would this show be any different?

I think the writers and producers of this show would love it if they knew we were coming up with different scenarios -- even if somebody thinks a scenario is implausible. As long as we're discussing the show, we're keeping it in the limelight and it doesn't get cancelled due to lack of viewer interest. They want us to wonder what is going to happen, and they probably don't want us to figure it out too early, so they probably would be tickled if the scenarios we suggest are wrong.

What might just be my favorite television show of all time is masterful at doing this. I love speculating where they're going/what different things might mean on Better Call Saul. 99.999% of the time I am wrong. I absolutely adore the show anyway. I view This is Us differently, but I do hope I can be surprised by what twists and turns the story may take. That said, I went kicking and screaming into the how Jack dies storyline because I didn't want to put an end date on which there would be no Jack stories. Maybe that's why I'm not caught up in the who is her answer either.

Funny you should mention that, because someone gave me Better Call Saul on blu-ray. It's sitting by my TV but I haven't started watching it yet.

I think it's my favorite TV show of all time. Ironically I went into it very skeptical because I loathed Saul on BrBa.

On BrBa Bryan Cranston's talent did the impossible and made me loathe the character he was playing, even though I adore the actor. On BCS Bob Odenkirk's talent has done the impossible and made me fall in love with his character, despite loathing him on the prior series. I thought BrBa was an incredibly well done series, one of the best ever, but stressed me out more and more as the seasons went by. For me BCS has been an improvement on incredible writing, acting and a masterful eye for detail -- including some of the most achingly beautiful cinematography I've ever seen.

ETA Why is Cranston starred out?

It's better than Breaking Bad, IMO.

That's what I was wondering, is Cranston a naughty word?

If it is, it's a new one on me. When it cropped up I wondered if I had a typo. Nope, simply the name of the actor most famous as Walter White on BrBa and Hal on Malcolm in the Middle.

I think something really bad is going to happen to the village. And somehow Jacks men are going to be responsible. There is tension between the villagers and a couple of the soldiers already. Not sure how the brother fits into that, but I think it's something Jack will carry with him for the rest of his life.
