Parents of the Class of 2019

I'm very happy (and a bit jealous) for all of your kids who have received acceptances or who have at least submitted some applications already! Well done!

DS will be applying EA to Providence and Fordham, so that'll be done by next week. I think we'll be able to relax a little once he has at least some applications submitted. He'll then have 6 more schools to apply regular decision - 5 that use the common app and 1 that doesn't.

Well, the application for Alabama went out yesterday, she has 6 others about ready to go, CSU will be the 30th as it's free to apply for all Colorado students on the 30th, then Vandy, MIT, Wash U... The names all run together for me after awhile! I think kids today are really lucky, they get to use the Common App for most of their schools, and the ones who don't use it, they can copy/paste a lot of it. I remember having to hand write those darn 5 page applications!

She applied to 30 schools? Yikes!

we have family there so there would be someone to help her in times of emergency. But teenagers never think they need that :rotfl2:

I know, DD thinks I'm crazy for saying "Shawna and Axel are an hour from Wm & Mary, Mimi and Gumpy are an hour from Sewanee and 90 min from Vandy....etc." Glad I'm not crazy and she's just being a teenager :)

My DD seems determined to put all her eggs in the Mizzou basket. So far that's all she's applied to. She got the acceptance letter

That's great! Congrats! I have several relatives who attended and an uncle who retired from academia as dean of something. Happy for her (and you!).

He's my oldest if you can't tell ;)

DD is the youngest of 3

Dd is the middle of 5

DD is my ONLY and DH lives out of town during the week so it's going to be a lonely house here next year.

Mine’s determined NOT to go to MIZZOU despite the fact it looks to have everything she needs :(

Sounds so familiar! I've been saying Go Gators! every time I see DD and making sure to put orange fiestaware on the blue placemats and vice versa.

I remember having to hand write those darn 5 page applications!

I remember typing up the applications with several different colored pages and having light blue, pink, mint green, and sunflower colored white out! Kids don't know how easy that aspect is for sure.

Are you in New York or Mass?

If you're in Mass, the New England schools have a regional tuition discount - if the ones in your state don't have the major you want, you pay somewhere between in-state and out-of-state tuition in the other state's system.

We are MA. He would get a break at UMaine. Might have him look at UNH. My DD (class of '17) applied to schools in NH & VT and got regional tuition offers but her SUNY school was by far the best offer-she got $14,000 in merit/year and tuition is just over $16,000. It requires she lives on campus but I want her on campus anyways. DS has one SUNY school on his list but it is more competitive than DDs school and his stats aren't as high so if he gets in he won't get anything close to what she got.

DD is the youngest of 3. This is by far the worst.
Class of 19 is my middle. I have a class of 2021 - my youngest of 3. I am so hoping she'll be my easiest. DD'17 really was pretty easy though.

Good news on the Eagle Scout project-after his first project was derailed due to legal issues he got approval from his troop. Now he needs council approval and he can present it at a meeting next week.

DS, class of 2019, is my middle. My oldest is a sophomore in college, and my youngest is a 6th grader who will graduate high school in 2025. I'll be doing this college application and FAFSA stuff for a while.

This is my youngest so we're looking at an empty nest. I also have a DD20 who will complete a community college program in May. HS graduation and college graduation the same month!

I had already shared DS applied to 3 colleges. The one he wants the most does not tell you till mid December.

1st to reply gave $24000 off all 4 years so $6000 each year. This week he received an offer to prepare another essay and have an interview to possibly receive more off. Today he received an offer for $4000 off room and board for the first year. This is the farest school from home. public college

2nd to reply today. He was accepted and Presidential Scholarship was offered $56000 off total; $14000 each year. Private college. And we can not see the offer for FAFSA - website down or possible not ready yet.

3rd school - the wait continues - 51 days. Which DD goes to and offered her less than $1000 off her first year, but gave her $6000 off this year?! Public college

My DS has 3 applications in (probably 2 more to go, but I really doubt either of those schools will end up being "the one.") He applied EA to all and none of them have rolling admissions. The earliest he expects to hear from one is December 15. The other two that he's applied to don't promise a decision till the end of January or early February. I don't remember being this nervous about waiting when I did my own college applications! (And none of them are really "reach" schools. According to the online calculators he's either at "good bet" or at the very high end of "maybe" for admission based on his grades/scores. Hopefully there won't be any surprises.)

Dh and DS submitted the Fafsa today. Dh is working on the CSS now. All teacher reccs are now in. So relieved. Tomorrow, going to submit four of the six applications. He’s still working on supplements for the other two. One of them has an early action deadline of Nov 1 but if he doesn’t make that, not a big deal. He’s got a day scheduled a few days before Thanksgiving to sit in on classes, meet faculty etc. at one of his top choices. I was glad when Dh said he’ll go with him because I was worried about him driving alone, bc he hasn’t done much Beltway driving at all.

And I also have a DS class of 2021. At least I’ll know what I’m doing by then, but his school choices are likely going to be very different.

Yesterday was the last time I’ll see Dd run xc (last meet is next weekend and I’m not going). She was approached from a D3 college recruiter that has been email her for a while, wants us to see the college (DH is actually an adjunct professor there, but he didn’t say anything). It’s a local school, and even if she had to go local, this wouldn’t be her pick. Dd told her she wanted to go out of state, wasn’t planning on anything more that club in college, but the recruiter said she thinks she can change her mind, lol. It was a county meet, Dd git 35th out of 99, and we were joking about why they would want her anyway (she did run a PR of 21.31, first in her school but not fabulous).

I don’t think I appreciated “lasts” with my oldest, or even second oldest when he was younger (last baseball game, last basketball game...). Now I do.

I need some talking down because I am panicking a little. DS submitted four applications yesterday :-). One of them was the state school which is a top choice and the only one on the coalition app. Priority deadline for scholarships etc. is Nov. 1. I realize now I forgot to have him show me the section where it shows if scores have been received. We sent scores in July to all his schools so they should be there. Does it generally take time once the application is submitted to link up their scores? I know the scores must go into some vast void because there is no guarantee everyone who submitted scores is going to apply - he sent scores to one school that didn't end up on his final list. Now I am stressing out because it's almost Nov.1 and he NEEDS to have his application complete by then. I admit part of it is because for this particular school, last year one of DS' friends thought he applied and then somehow something never got submitted (I don't know what component) and he obviously didn't get in because his application was never completed. I don't have his coalition info with me to log in and see where it addresses this info.

I know I am probably overreacting, so thanks for listening.

This is frustration - here we are, 2 days before the deadline on 5 applications, and the school counselor still hasn't sent transcripts out yet. I'm tempted to call the counselor to check to make sure these are going out, but I'm trying hard not to be 'that' parent. :headache:
I think at this point, I would be that parent. Counselor has had plenty of time to do it and if your kid isn't getting it done (no fault of his, I just mean if his asking is not doing the trick), it's time for you to step in. That's what it took for us to get his schedule straightened out before school started.

For the schools my son applied to (3 -- his were all Common App), each of them sent him log in information for a "dashboard" that shows what they've received and when. He got the dashboard info within about 24 hours of when he applied. For all but one of those schools everything was showing "received" as soon as he logged in, including scores that had been sent ahead of time. For one, transcript and scores were NOT showing as received the first day (although they had been sent prior), but they showed up the next day. I'd say logging in to the school dashboard would be even better than looking on the common app.

I hope everything is there! I was paranoid about it too and needed to see for myself that everything had been accounted for. (When I applied, I remember having to chase down something from my guidance counselor that they'd promised would have been sent "in plenty of time.")

And I agree with the others SoccerDad. With 2 days left, it's time to be "that parent." There's too much money on the line to let something slip.

Do the transcripts have to be there by that date or just the app? I can't remember what I've read on College Confidential to that effect. My kids have only applied to rolling admissions and our GC gets on it right away.

DD hosted her teen fall festival yesterday. Unfortunately she didn't have near the attendance she hoped for but she is grateful for those that came and especially the ones that stayed to the end. The last half hour with the live band was so fun and she got to sing with them and visit with them after. They asked where she was going to college and when she told them one guy just gushed over the school. I'm so glad, she was worried about not getting very positive reactions from people so that response from a cool musician dude should boost her confidence.

I know two of his schools he's gotten dashboard links but two has has not. I'll ask him tonight about that. I found the info for our region's admissions counselor so if he needs to email or call tomorrow, he can. Thanks.

Be sure he checks his spam folder. Two of DS's three were flagged as "promotional e-mail" and ended up in the spam folder. Glad you found the admission counselor's contact info.
