Parents of the Class of 2019

Be sure he checks his spam folder. Two of DS's three were flagged as "promotional e-mail" and ended up in the spam folder. Glad you found the admission counselor's contact info.
He gets tons of junk e-mail in his regular inbox too but I will suggest the spam folder. He said he hasn’t gotten his dashboard for this school yet, it’s the only one that uses the Coalition. Two of the three that use the Common app have sent his dashboard. I asked him to please humor me and email the admissions counselor directly tomorrow with specifics. Sometimes he’s very vague which will get him not far in this case, I think. I said tell her you’ve applied for the priority deadline on x date, your scores were sent on y date, etc etc. He has been getting very frustrated with me harping on these things because he says he is taking care of it but I said please just do it, we will get the answer and when I feel better about it I will stop harping and everyone will be happier, lol.

UPDATE: I'm officially driving the kid crazy. Before we all left this morning, I reiterated everything. He rolled his eyes. A couple hours later I got a text: "Everything is received." To which I replied, "Thanks, how do you know?" And he said it's now showing on the Coalition app.

ETA Yep it appears I've lost all progress on the college decision. She has agreed to continue with her housing deposit on Thursday, since it's refundable.

Well, DD got an e-mail yesterday from Univ. of Alabama letting her know she was accepted and inviting her to apply to the honors college. I have to admit I was a bit disappointed, I liked the idea of the big envelopes with information on the school and the acceptance letters, but, one down, 12 to go!
DD knew she would be accepted at Mizzou, but still loved coming home to the big gold and black envelope that said "congratulations" on the outside. LOL. The honors college invite came the same day in a separate envelope.

Congrats to your DD!

Well DD got accepted to truman with a 7,000 a year scholarship but found out that it comes with a 60 hour a semester volunteer service requirement. Then we got the big envelope from Southeast Missouri State. They offered her almost 11,000 the first year and if she keeps her grades up it will be up to almost 12,000 by the time she graduates AND the biggie is they rent text books for 336 dollars a year. So I think that SEMO maybe gaining an edge over Truman. We have put the housing deposit down at Semo and if they have sent her the login information from Truman to do that I haven't heard about it yet nor have we got the big envelope. I told her i would like her to try to make that final decision in the next couple of weeks. So i don't have to send my taxes all over the place. (Switched jobs, rolled over a IRA the FAFSA is a MESS :scared:. She did ask me if I would be upset if she went to SEMO and i told her of course not! So hopefully we will have the decision soon.

Congrats! IIRC it's not her first choice but definitely nice to have that in her back pocket :)

That sounds fun!

Congrats on both offers! Totally hear you on the FAFSA...we were having a heck of a time linking parent-child (I have never heard my DH curse as much in 25 years as in the FAFSA weekends)...turns out she PUT THE WRONG SSN on hers. :scared1: "It's just one number, Mom.":faint: That child will be the death of me, I swear. After 3 weeks, it's finally good.

Good luck on the decision! So nice to have options :)

DS submitted two applications yesterday for Early Action. He has two more to ready to be submitted this weekend and then is still working on the final four. His goal is to be done by Thanksgiving or the first week of December at the latest. We shall see...

Housing deposit is in, I thought it would just be building preferences and DD is busy all day so I did it myself but did have to answer some roommate matching questions like neatness, music preferences, early riser. I made my guesses and Snapchatted them to DD and I guess I got it all right. She is applying to a Living Learning Community to live with others in similar majors, in part so she can be in the nicer dorms. I think her friend put her down as a roommate request, though that won't happen if DD does the LLC.

The Cinderella musical is a week from tomorrow! Hopefully they had a good 4 hour practice tonight. This is the point where everybody panics...but they always seem to pull it off when the time comes. DH made a full-on golden carriage for them (he's a welder on the side) and got it delivered to the stage this week. Can't wait to see it and DD on stage!

DS, class of 2019, is my middle. My oldest is a sophomore in college, and my youngest is a 6th grader who will graduate high school in 2025. I'll be doing this college application and FAFSA stuff for a while.

My kids are exactly the same age! I definitely need a break after this one. She’s going to be the death of me. ED and numerous EA apps were submitted over the past two weeks. She’s emotionally exhausted. ED is a major lottery ticket so we’re functioning as if she won’t be accepted and focusing on the others. Monday is her interview for choice #2 which happens to be my #1. Congrats to all those with acceptances. I keep checking portals for the hope of seeing one!

We have a visit at the school DS has been accepted to next week--DS visited with his class last year, and DH drove the bus for them, but I haven't been there yet. This was originally DS' #2 school but he seems to be leaning towards choosing it now. It is a small school, private, about 2 hours from home but an easy drive. He has been offered a decent merit scholarship from them, although he will need to apply for more, both from the school and other places. He knows a handful of kids that go to this school, which is a plus. I think if he still likes it, we will put the housing deposit down while we are there.

He has not completed the application for the school that he originally wanted--still says he wants to go to. He has done everything except the essay, which he says is because he doesn't like the topic (too bad!). He really liked it when he visited and wants to go one more time, but the essay is his hang up. This is a much bigger school, which he says is okay, also private, but it is also 6-1/2 hours from home.

He applied for a third school because an admissions rep visited his school. It is a larger public university about an hour from us, a state school in a neighboring state, and he has already said he doesn't want to go there. I asked why he applied, and he said, "It was free".

We are fine with him going to the school that is further away if that is what he wants, but the fact that he hasn't done the essay for them after four months makes me think he doesn't really want to. We have reminded him about it and the upcoming deadline, and he says he knows, but it isn't getting done and I am not going to hold him down and force him to do it--should I, though? My thought is that he is almost 18 years old and knows what he needs to do. I am happy to look over it, offer suggestions, etc., but I feel like he needs to take the initiative to do it himself.

He did register to take the ACT again next month. 3 more points will qualify him for an additional $3000 from the smaller school.

Good luck, BigBabyBlues. It's hard to tell when to push and when to back off.

My son submitted his first 3 applications but intends (intended?) to do 2 more. He's got pretty much everything done except the supplemental essays. He said "I'll work on those after I get these first 3 in." (The other schools have 12/1 early action deadlines). There has been absolutely no movement that I can see on those other applications. On one hand, I really think it will come down to one of the three schools he's already applied to, so if he's changed his mind about applying, then I'm kind of okay with that, but I'd really like to hear him say "I don't think I'm going to do that after all." and not "I'll get to it. Stop bugging me." or just have him run out of time.

I guess if you are good with him going to the other school, maybe don't force him to get the other essay done? He might not actually want to go that far. Though it might be good to have options later. I'm a lot of help I know! :p

Hope he can raise that ACT. DD insisted she didn't have any more points in her. At the school she now says she is going to again, she just makes it into the top merit with her score, so we're calling it good. At the scholarship interviews it might not be to her advantage to be on the low end of qualifying, but her GPA, ECs, and possible Valedictorian could put her in the running. Who knows. They told me about 1 in 14 applicants get a Presidential scholarship so it's not horrible odds.

DD got into the Living Learning Community so it will be suite life for her! Will be a lot nicer than the standard dorms so hopefully that will help her with the transition and such.

DD's first acceptance came in today. University of Texas at Austin. I turned to her and said "Congratulations, you are going to college!" LOL. She has three apps in, working on 5 more. Congrats to all who have received acceptances so far! I've gotten so far behind on individual responses and "likes" because not much time for Disboards lately, but I'm still rejoicing in the victories each of you are posting and commiserating on all the frustrations.

design_mom, thanks for letting me know I'm not the only one! This is all new to me, I don't know what I'm doing. I don't remember my senior year being this hard! I took a gap year and then went to the local community college while working full time, so it wasn't the same.

bjscheel - Having another option was my thought too, but I think I'm going to leave it up to him. He knows about it and he gets emails from them daily, so it isn't as if he will actually forget unless he wants to ;-)

Congratulations to those receiving acceptances!

Big baby blues, I also agree to let your son decide if he will do the essay. Like you said he gets emails, it must be on his mind. I would say something generic like do you have anything to send to any schools that’s what I’ve been asking my daughter.

Well, Daughter got her first acceptance letter unfortunately it’s her last choice school. Plus we don’t even have a mailing about it she just got a text so we don’t know the financial offer.

Congrats to our kids getting offers!

DD enjoyed her visit to Western State U in Gunnison. It’s definitely her #1, though she’s still pretty sure she’ll go the JuCo/transfer route. They seem excited to work with her on that. I think she likes the fact there are only 2,900 students & our guide recognized several friends along the way. We did hit some snow on our way back to DEN today, but nothing too extreme. The Winters here will probably have more snow, but less in the way of extreme temps compared to in Iowa & Northern IL.

Side note: this school is starting an engineering program Fall of 2019 & is offering 20 incoming engineering students “full ride” scholarships.

I'm glad you guys enjoyed it! They will have more snow in the winter, but you're right somewhat in that our temps usually aren't too bad. Just remember, when the sun goes down, the temps drop a lot! No humidity in the air to hold in the heat!

We have another appointment today with the college consultant for DD. She's gotten 6 of her 13 apps in, and one acceptance back with that invitation to apply to the honors college, so another application! I think she's ready to shout from the essays!
