Another week, another shooting

No mass shooting is an accident. It’s a completely relevant fact.

And it would be a little difficult for me to not to travel in in US since I live here. I go about my life, go where I want and I don’t live in fear. I even drive a car even though I’m more likely to die doing that.

I’m also not numb to these incidents. Every incident deeply saddens me and enrages me that nothing is being to prevent them. It’s a total cop out to say nothing can be done in US.

Sorry, I got numb awhile ago, probably after the first graders got shot up. It's not so much that nothing CAN be done, it's more that nothing WILL be done.

the people voted to ban them, a judge over ruled. Now they are not for sale but you can own one

The only people allowed to own them now (because of the overruling) are people who owned them before the 2000 ban on selling them.
The shooter here was not old enough in 2000 to have purchased them therefore it is illegal for him to have one. There is no way he could be grandfathered in.
At least that is my understanding from the articles I'm reading. Have to go now but if you have something that clarifies this please post because what I'm reading is a bit all over the place. Thanks.

Plenty of car crashes are not accidents either - they're negligence. And really, whether accidental or intentional is irrelevant. The point was that just like a car crash, there is just no way to predict or prevent these kind of tragedies - at least in the USA. So just enjoy life while you can, take reasonable precautions - like try to not go to any churches or other places of worship, concerts, grocery stores, libraries, schools, airports, museums, malls, food courts, restaurants, offices, etc, and hope it doesn't happen to you or anyone you care about. Oh, and if you don't have to travel to the USA, do not travel to the USA.
Havent there been mass killings by autos? I seem to recall several of these in Europe. Maybe we should ban autos.

Yes the only place state gun laws really work is Hawaii, which is the safest state in the nation, otherwise its a 4 hour drive to Vegas to get whatever you want. We really need congress to do something, which will never happen, so as stated live with it and hope its not your neice

Those are universal limitations on the right, not a removal of a right due to mental illness. I'm talking about stripping away a right completely because someone is mentally Ill. The equivelant would be you are not allowed to have any speech at all because you are mentally Ill, not that you can't commit specific crimes that are crimes for everyone.

Ok, so that's a good point. But you know what? I don't care.

I read that the gun was legally purchased but that "he had modified its magazine so it could hold more rounds".

I don't know if that's something someone can do themselves?? Likely still illegal for him to have one (based on what you're saying, I really don't know).

Longer magazines for that handgun are commercially available. It’s likely he simply bought the higher capacity magazine(s) even though they are illegal in CA.

WOW......
There are disturbed and deranged individuals from all kinds of backgrounds, from all over the world.
Some of the comments here are a LOT more disturbing to me than the original topic.

And this is why this problem will never be solved in the USA - some people are more upset by comments on a friendly message board than the fact of 12 people randomly being murdered in a mass shooting.
I thought this thread was going well considering the subject. :confused3

NRA seems upset too. Here's a nice whiny tweet those punks had posted earlier:

"Someone should tell self-important anti-gun doctors to stay in their lane. Half of the articles in Annals of Internal Medicine are pushing for gun control. Most upsetting, however, the medical community seems to have consulted NO ONE but themselves. "

As of now under the law, anyone who has been adjudicated as a mental defective or committed to a mental institution is prohibited from owning a firearm.
The problem is is that doesn't take in to account other people who suffer from mental illness but don't fall in to those 2 categories who already own, or are currently legally purchasing guns. We need to change that.

And that’s where it gets sticky. We have defined a level of mental illness that precludes firearm possession, but how much are we willing to expand that definition? Serious question.

Yeah, and I'm pretty sure the questions are specific about the 2 categories that prohibit you from owning. I filled one out a few years ago so I don' remember exactly. You do have to fill it out every single time you purchase a firearm, they don't keep one on file forever.
And as far as I know there is no national database for those people, and states aren't required to report to any kind of agency about it.

These people are in the national database provided the states do report. There have been at least two big pushes to go after the states for failure to report (after VA Tech, and again after Sandy Hook - though the latter incident was unrelated to this issue), but I don’t know if anything has come of it. It’s the one area where both sides of this debate seem to be in complete agreement.

I have no idea what a solution to this problem may be, however, I'm seeing another problem emerging due to all this gun violence. Right off the top of my head, I personally know 20-25 people who have guns and are licensed to carry them. Each of these people are frightened to the point of hysteria. These are tiny little middle aged women (most divorced or widowed) who carry 357 Magnum's and other guns in their purses to our local Woman's Cub. They're *so pumped up and frightened* that they're going to have a knee jerk reaction and kill each other. I'm seeing this at church as well. I do believe in getting proper training and being licensed to carry a gun...but it's not being able to control the hysteria and emotions these people are displaying that truly scares me. I'm waiting for a car to backfire in the parking lot and see these women start blasting away out a window.

Seriously, we got to 6 pages and I thought people were being pretty respectful and trying to keep it on topic without evading board rules.
I hadn’t been able to look at the boards in hours & thought surely this thread was closed already!
