Delicious December

December will have to be mostly self-hosted, as people pop in and out during the month, but I'll kick the month off with this first post.

Who's in for some healthy conversations during December? What are your personal healthy living goals for the month?

I am here and will pop in when I can. This month my goal is to lose a pound. Then in January I will kick it into gear.

Well here we are in December! I'm wrapping up the year by doing a juice cleanse - woohoo, always a ton of fun! This time I went with 5 days of juice-till-dinner, then I'm having a simple Whole 30 type meal. I'm in day three and so far it's actually been pretty good.

Before I started the cleanse I got on the scale for the first time in quite a while, and was surprised to see that I'd "only" put back on 10 pounds, because I felt like I'd gained back the entire 20 that I had lost during the summer. With the juicing I've already dropped 4 of that, so I'm quite pleased.

My goals for the month: drop another 4 pounds and have a wonderful vacation at WDW - which is next week!

MOTIVATION MONDAY:

What is your word-of-the-month for December?

For me it is going to be PEACE.

For the third year I am participating in the Peace Project Knit-along, and this year is extra special because I met the gal who does it at the knitting retreat in Alaska. Part of the project is to knit a cowl pattern "together" (there are around 1000 people joined in from around the world) and part are the daily postings Christine does on her blog about peace. It is so calming and inspirational, and so fun to be part of something that is putting positive energy out in to the world.

Thank you for keeping this going, Oneanne! Your knitting project sounds so interesting-I can see where it’s good for your mental outlook.

I think my mantra this month will be “find the joy.” Playing Christmas music, baking, getting together with family and friends-this Friday we’ll go pick out our tree with our grandson. He’s all excited about it!

Thanks, @Oneanne for getting us up and running!

I made it to yoga for the first time in about three months and just felt wonderful even though I could barely do anything! The instructor said we'd have a sub for Wednesday's class. Wonder how that will affect the turn out?!

I'm back to logging all food and still keeping track of steps. I'm wondering what's going on with today's number. I feel like I've done plenty, and I walked to work, home for lunch, back, and home again, and my number is a couple thousand below normal. I may need to pace around the house to make my step goal!

TOPIC TUESDAY:

How does food affect your mood/emotions? Are there certain foods that make you happy, calm you down, or cause agitation? Are there any foods that alter your sleep patterns and dreams? Do you have a go-to food for when you are stressed? What does hangry look like on you and how do you deal with it?

In the world of cleansing/elimination dieting, day three starts the period known as "kill all the things". I thought I might skip that phase during this cleanse, by having actual food for dinner, but man-o-man did it hit me full force yesterday. I was in a nasty mood, and really just wanted to work at my desk and be left alone but it was a day full of meetings so no luck there - for me or the people around me. I'm hoping today will be better... at the very least I'm on day four of five, so I'm almost done.

My crappy mood yesterday is what got me to thinking about food and emotions. I've mentioned many times that I use sugar to numb. I think when I have dairy late in the evening it alters my sleep/dreams... I go in to loops dreaming the same thing over and over again. I've also mentioned needing to stress chew before, and I usually reach for sugar when stressed, because of the numbing affect.

When I think of hangry I think of the meal where my avatar was taken. I'd flown on the red-eye and arrived at 7am, my room wasn't available until 5pm (!) so I didn't get a nap (!), and after finally checking in I had to quickly freshen up and run back over to EPCOT to make my ADR at Garden Grill... then I had to wait 45 minutes to get seated. I was out of body tired, and warned the seater/greeter guy that I was HANGRY, and was I ever. He was a real sweetheart and helped to turn things around, and of course as soon as some food hit my belly I was OK, and ended up having one of the most enjoyable character meals of any trip. The experience really helped me to recognize what hangry looks like on me, so I take more care now not to get to that point.

@Oneanne thanks for starting the thread! November was a total fail for me (at least DISboard wise, I got a lot done at work and some really great time with husband in our spare time, so not a bad month at all).

I am totally motivated to make December count and need to check in here more often. But I think my December word will be: Relax! I totally need a vacation (12/14 is my last day at work for the year! Yeah!) and I need to make sure that I actually will relax and not just kill time. I want to be more mindful as to how I spend my time!

When I am tired or stressed I tend to think-“let’s just go out to eat” and I order an alcoholic drink and something high in calories and fat. It’s ok once in a while, but doing that too often I end up feeling yucky and gaining weight. Keeping some quick and healthier options in the house helps-or going to a restaurant that has steamed shrimp or crab legs so I can enjoy dinner without the guilt.

Oh, and this time of year if I go Christmas shopping I put a couple of my own cookies in my purse so I’m not tempted by cinnamon rolls and giant muffins from Starbucks!

Woohoo!

First off - it's day five of the five day cleanse. Aside from the extreme crankiness (which did raise it's ugly head again yesterday) it's been a success and has given me the results I was looking for, including being down another 4 pounds this morning. So my monthly goal has been met... now let's see if I can keep it off.

And the big WOOHOO - I leave for WDW Saturday night! I'm a little bit stressed about being away from home for another week, but I know that when I get there and fully recognize that it isn't another business trip I'll be very, very happy. Eating is going to be a challenge... I've got several evening activities scheduled that involve food, the kind of food I really shouldn't be having: Candlelight Processional with dinner at Biergarten (a buffet built for overeating), Jingle Bell, Jingle BAM (a dessert party for heaven's sake), and Terrace Holiday Wishes Dessert Party (because if you're going to do one, why not do two). I'll just have to do my best to stay on track as much as possible... and make the two dessert parties the only times I have sweets.

And I'm really looking forward to staying at The Swan: I'm hearing that the remodel is beautiful (heck, it was beautiful before), and I love being in that area and being able to walk to EPCOT, or take the boats. I'm normally not a huge fan of DHS, but they've really done great things with holiday decor after the end of Osborn Lights, so I'll probably spend more time there than I normally would.

Plus it will be really nice to just relax and soak up the holiday vibe!

Your trip sounds wonderful! It’s my dream to visit during the holidays. Maybe next year! As to the dessert parties, we did the Terrace party last spring and the portions are really tiny. Get there earlier than the “official” time-they were letting people in a half hour early. We thought it was worth it for the great view-I can only imagine what they do for Christmas!

My woo-hoo is that I weighed in yesterday the same as before Thanksgiving. I can’t say I tracked or denied myself very much, but the Monday after the holiday I was able to refocus.

I've heard that for a 9pm start, the check-in starts at 8:30pm, so be there a bit earlier than that? Also, did you stay in the terrace area for the viewing? I'm planning on eating dinner around 7pm, so I'm not hungry for desserts!

Yes, we were there probably close to half hour before-they we’re letting people in. Much easier walking around the buffet tables and we enjoyed just sitting and relaxing.
We did the garden view-we leaned/sat along the back railing and the view was perfect.

Tuesday: My comfort food would be peanut M&Ms but I do not have any in the house. Ever. Back when they were actually sold in one pound bags, I could eat an entire bag in one day. Can you say fistful?! Now I think my comfort food is vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup. Pretty sure I'm not going to buy anymore of that when this tub is gone.

Wednesday: My wahoo is that since the weather has been clear and cold this week I wore long pants instead of capris. I was worried they'd be snug because I am feeling huge, but they were not!

I'm with @Flossbolna for being mindful of my time. I spend a lot of my evenings just killing time--like tonight playing solitaire on my ipad. My excuse was that I was tired and have had a headache for a couple days. I need to snap out of it and just do something. It's not like I don't have a list a mile long of things to do!

Tomorrow I'll get up at o'dark thirty and scrape and scrape and scrape my car windows before heading to the gym. I love having heated car seats! Here's hoping tomorrow evening will be productive!!

Quick check in: spent yesterday evening making Christmas cookies. Did have a little of them, but not too much. So that was good and it was fun making them!

@Oneanne your plans sound great! I hope you will enjoy the trip.

THURSDAY TOPIC:

Since both @flosbolna and @gls1/2fll have mentioned MINDFULNESS, let's make that the topic of the day.
What does mindfulness mean to you? Do you even think about it? Are there things you do to zone out? Is there something you do to call yourself back?

I'm addicted to Instagram and playing Solitaire on my phone, and use both to zone out. To a degree I also use knitting to zone out, but it turns in to mindfulness because I have to pay attention to what my hands are doing... I need to practice breathing with each stitch as well to make a really powerful.

I need to get back into the practice of going outside everyday and just standing and breathing. We're at the time of year here were it's dark more than it's light, so getting out for an after work walk is a challenge, but just going out and standing in the yard for 5 minutes it totally doable, and just thinking about it feels so good.
