I love credit cards so much!

Well...I don't know what to do now. I tried applying for the AMEX Schwab again today for my wife. The popup message is still there...My wife has signed up for ONE card from AMEX in the past 12 months. In 2017 she got 3 cards from them also.

In an effort to remove the poup I've done the following over the past couple of months:
  • 3 Transactions and $350+ on BBP
  • 3 Transactions and $150+ on Hilton
  • 3 Transactions and $20 on Delta Biz
  • Numerous Transactions and $2,300+ on BCP (this is about $300 above the $2k required for my upgrade offer)
At this point, I've now wasted over $800 that could have been directed at some other MSR had I gotten a different card. We put transactions and spend on every card she has and it didn't seem to make a difference. There also was this unfortunate development that even if I don't see the popup one time...that they may still deny us the bonus.

Perhaps this is a sign...I should just forget the 60k MRs...get a Schwab Plat, triple dip the airline credits and cash out all my MRs. Of course that would play really well with AMEX I'm sure (getting a card and spending $600 in reimbursables ONLY on it then closing it after 13 months, lol).

Part of my dilemma is that we have ~200k MRs. So we could get $2,000 in gift cards or $2,500 in cash. I'm going to pay a $550 annual fee to get $500 more...Of course the airline credit offset that. If I wait much longer then the triple dip goes out the window which just makes the whole thing $200 worse. This just makes SO MUCH MORE sense if I was also getting $750 from the signup bonus...but I may never get that and am I just holding on to hope for something that will never happen...

I am quite torn...would be happy to hear the thoughts of my trusted CC friends on this one...

Wow. I have no advice because this is the only cc site I read with any frequency so you know whatever I know (plus more, Im sure). I just wanted to say how ridiculous this pop-up thing is. It also makes me want to apply for another AmEx card while AmEx seems to think that I am using their cards properly . . .

I think you have to have more patience and wait for the pop up to disappear. It's not like you need $2K in gift cards, right? You may need to just set this one on the back burner for awhile. It's MR's and Amex probably won't do much devaluation of them very quickly, unlike something like hotel points. MR is Amex's own currency and they don't hand them out like candy unlike something like Hilton or Marriott points.
True - I am only going to make it worse next month by cancelling the Delta Biz card after just 13 months LOL! And there's no way I'm paying an AF to try to get the RAT off my tail. Sorry RAT but you aren't getting that from me, lol.

I find myself to be a conundrum...

1) I hold on to URs in hopes that Disney will return of I will come up with a 1.5x use for the points when I could easily cash out at 1cpp and be done with it
2) I can't wait to cash out MRs and am so frustrated I'm potentially willing give up 60k MRs just to cash them rather than concede that 1cpp on gift cards is always possible and maybe I could find a better use for them

I can see my own hypocrisy...and I am ok with it LOL! :rotfl2:

I wish I had some advice but Amex is so mysterious. Just curious, have you tried other cards aside from the Schwab Plat? I have seen DPs that the pop-up doesn't come on every card.

Which is total nonsense, but that's neither here nor there.

You know, my own experience is pretty small, but I've been watching my daughter wade through Amex cards like water. The big difference is she puts a lot of spend on the cards when she has one. She just got approved for the Plat (this morning and self referred after I shared that with her) because she has the MB Plat and she figures she wouldn't get approved for it when they change the MB plat to a regular product. The MB plat will get dumped when the year is up....she has to give something up to get something, but Amex loves her and it's got to be the huge spend.

Your spend looks pretty restrained and just might not have been enough for Amex's parameters, but I do understand not wanting to waste money on a card unless you see the result you are after.

Daughter's travel plans will use a bunch of points in the next year as she will be flying literally around the globe for various family events and weddings etc. So she's grabbing every card she can.

Depends on how you redeem URs. If you plan to cash them out then Marriott has slightly more value. If you use URs at 1.25, 1.5, or transfer to partners then URs probably wins the day.

Without any facts, I'd lean towards URs.
THanks... that's kind of what I thought... just paying resort fees here in Maui(I say that like it's nothing lol) - I think I'll go for the UR- I never cash them out anyway.

So, I applied for CIP#2 with EIN on 12/1. Was 2 weeks for a few days then went to 7-10 days. I needed a card right away for some expenses coming due so I applied for the Capital One Venture card and was applied right away. So, I got the card and have already put on $3500 of the $5000 needed so that will be easy. Getting this card put me at 5/25.

I just got the letter in from Chase on the CIP. They are just looking for verification of address/EIN. So, I just faxed all that to them and hopefully that will be approved also.

Will me getting the Capital One have any impact now or not since they would have already pulled credit report?

I don't know how I am going to spend another $5000. So need help with MSing (never done this). So, I have read a bit about PNC bank and that I should be able to fund a checking and savings account with $2000 each. Also heard it is kind of pain to open. (and I need to lower my cash advance to $100 or whatever they will let me correct?)

I have paid some of my Mortgage with Mastercards (Citi AA Business). Is it possible to buy MasterCard Gift Cards with the CIP and then pay Mortgage that way - or is that not allowed or not a good idea?

Also I know very little about Venmo - but you just transfer money to someone else. So, I could possibly transfer $ to my son under his bank account and then I can just transfer from his account back to mine. Will that work or is that kind of iffy too.

Looking for any suggestions. Don't want to lose out on these UR's if I get approved after sending in verification info. ( and I used DH's CIP for referral so another 20,000 points there) Thanks Everyone...

Fingers crossed on the CIP #2. There’s a good chance you’ll be approved even with the new Venture card. Congrats on the Venture approval!

Ok, I don’t do bank funding, so I can’t comment.

Yes, you can use CIP #2 to buy MCGCs at a grocery store and use them on Plastiq to pay your mortgage, but it may not be a very cheap option to hit MSR. Assuming you buy a $500 MGCG with a $5.95 activation fee, that’s a 1.19% fee. Plastiq tacks on another 2.5% fee. If you can earn gas reward points at your grocery store on the MCGCs, and you have FFDs on Plastiq, that’ll lower your cost. @speedyfishy may have more experience with MCGCs from giftcards .com, which does have a $6.95 activation fee on $500 (1.39%), but I think earns 3x UR on the CIP to help offset that fee.

As for Venmo, I haven’t read anything about Chase having any issue with using Venmo to meet MSR. You could, as you mentioned, make a P2P transfer to your son using Venmo and hit MSR that way. The concern is on the Venmo side possibly shutting down your account and holding funds in limbo if they suspect something fraudulent or illegal. It’s best if you have a seasoned account, and make the transfer(s) look as natural as possible, e.g., payment for tuition, rent, new clothes or a computer, use emojis, etc. Have your son withdraw the money into his bank account then write you a check or something. Don’t Venmo funds to DS, and have him Venmo the money directly back to you. Also note that Venmo has certain transfer and withdrawal limits for new/unverified accounts, and limits on how many new cards you can add to your Venmo account in a rolling 6 month period. Check those. Venmo does charge a 3% fee for payments using credit cards, but you earn 3x UR on the payment and fee on the CIP. I did read some people are having issues adding the CIP to Venmo recently. I hope this doesn’t affect you, but have a backup plan if Venmo doesn’t work.

Yes, the Aspire has a $450 AF, but comes with a $250/calendar year airline fee credit that works the same as the Platinums’ and Gold’s airline fee credit, i.e., works on Delta GCs in $50 increments, AA in $100 increments (+$50, although there are DPs that say you can do up to $200 AA GC in one transaction), and on a $250 SW GC. As a calendar year benefit, it resets on 1/1/19 and again on 1/1/20, which should allow you to triple dip $250 before your second $450 AF is due sometime in January/February 2020.

The $250 Hilton resort credit is a cardmember year credit, so one now, then it’ll reset sometime after next December. You may be able to double dip this credit depending on when the credit resets relative to when your second year AF posts, after which you’ll have 30 days to cancel your card for a full refund (no refunds after that, but you can still downgrade for a prorated refund of the AF). The resort credit is somewhat restrictive. You can only use it at select Hilton resorts. Even if you don’t have a resort stay planned right now, you can use your first cardmember year credit throughout most of 2019, and it’ll work even on prepayments on a reservation at a qualifying resort for a stay beyond your first cardmember year, like @calypso726 has done.

All this talk of double and triple dipping assumes you’ll cancel this card after your first year, but the benefits are compelling and @calypso726 has said this is her favorite sock drawer card (even more than the Club Carlson card?!).

Whoa, whoa, whoa!!!! You're saying I can triple dip the $250 airline credit? Do I have to designate an airline? The BF lives in NC so AA is a bit more convenient getting to him in the smaller airports. But that said Delta does too. Detroit is kinda a Delta hub, so more often flying that. So I could do the $250 now, $250 in 2019 and then sneak in one more $250 before I cancel?

I've done one account with PNC and several others at other banks. The first time I tried PNC I couldn't do it because I answered the obscure questions wrong. I didn't recognize a cell phone number that I had years ago. I tried again a few months ago and had no trouble at all and even got a bonus out of it. Good luck.

Yes. And yes, you’ll have to select an airline before using the airline fee credit. If you plan to use the credit on GCs, you should pick either AA, Delta, or SW.

Can I get some upvotes? My Karma dropped to 38 and my referral links were removed. I was trying to get 4 Karmas a week but I guess I slacked off.

Thanks for the love!

I gave you an upvote! I just happened to somehow see my karma the other day. I have like 48 or something! I need to post something to get it up to 50 so I can put my links up. I had no idea I was that high cause I never post anything lol!!

@SouthFayetteFan is a Marriott millionaire.

I’m sitting on a huge stash of Marriott points, but not quite a million, eyeing the impeding implementation of Cat 8 and peak pricing next year, and I’m having a bit of FOMO. Where should I book while the gettin’s still good?!

Where do you want to go? Have all your Hawaii trips booked?

I'm a little bit better than a half millionaire and waiting for almost 70K points from the SPG promo I did and upgrading to the Marriott Premier plus a few odd points from the 29 promo. But I'm not looking to do anything splashy - just a few low key redemptions until I see something I want to splurge on. Plus in January my stay at Vistana Villages will get me another 15K. I haven't spent a point in ages and have a little chunk in a future room in Clearwater in January. Tempted to do a cheaper room and save most of those points. I also have a few Marriott gift cards lying about - Marriott is going to keep my attention for a bit, but sometimes I just feel like blowing it all.

My new passion is building MR points with Amex.

But Amtrak has gotten in the way a bit with their 3x promo. I'm seeing value in those points but that promo will be over at year's end. I've picked up a few thousand since they announced it, but in the middle had to do my Gold card, which I love! Amtrak has also had some great promos out there for rail travel.

I have no other AMEX cards I'm interested in, lol. If we had gotten approved, this might have been our last AMEX card for a long time (dare I say...ever?...or at least until they change their approach)

You know, my own experience is pretty small, but I've been watching my daughter wade through Amex cards like water. The big difference is she puts a lot of spend on the cards when she has one. Yeah - this recent idea of running a bunch of transactions on each card was born from conversations here. I'm not going to sacrifice thousands of dollars of spend for a subpar return in an effort to get 1 card bonus. Part of the problem is 2 of the 4 cards she has are in programs we don't even care about (Hilton and Delta). Delta will be gone soon so no worries there. I can justify spend on the BCP card and almost justify on the BBP so maybe we keep putting regular stuff on there and see if it improves in the future.

Hey...I'd appreciate if you are a little more accurate with your description of my stash. It is 1,419,863 points I'll have you know :P :P

You only show 12 Karma in the last 3 months FYI. If was that one comment where you called that guy pathetic on the Disney thread, lol. You might be looking at your all-time karma which is not what we use for eligibility.

I’m all set for Hawaii in ~10 days — 5 nights at the Royal Hawaiian, 3 nights at the Sheraton Waikiki, and 2 nights in between at Aulani. Unsure what we want to do next Christmas, and it’s too early to book anyway.

I’ve gotta admit we’ve been talking about doing an overwater bungalow in Bora Bora for years, and I see that I can book 5 nights in a Deluxe Overwater Bungalow with Mt. Otemanu views at the St. Regis Bora Bora in August for 240k Marriott and about a $3k cash upgrade. It’s the $3k cash upgrade that’s giving me pause. Otherwise, I could totally make it work since United has direct flights from SFO to PPT.
