Do you ever get "where's that?" when you tell someone where you're from?

Gilroy has been on my bucket list for a while. We are doing a summer vacation this year and one option is the west coast SPECIFICALLY to hit Gilroy and Monterey.

There’s not much to do in Gilroy unless it’s for the Garlic Festival or you’re going shopping. It’s a cross between a farm town and a less expensive bedroom community for Silicon Valley. Maybe the Gilroy Gardens kiddie theme park if you have kids.

Hi neighbor! I live in Lockport!!:cheer2: Yes- everyone thinks Buffalo, NY is right by NYC:confused3

I'm also from LP, or rather, down the road just a smidge in Royalton.

Yep. I always have the, "So what's NYC like?!?" And I have to explain I've never been, but I live closest to Niagara Falls and Lake Ontario.

Oddly enough, though, if I wear a Genesee Brewery or Rochester House of Guitars shirt, people come running up to talk to me about it.

There are all the suburbs of Kansas City that are in Kansas and not Missouri.
It's roughly split half half (not exactly but close enough) in terms of counties part of the KC metro split between KS and MO.

There are two Kansas Cities-one in each state (KCK and KCMO). But those are only two cities out of the metro. It's why it's hard to really phrase it as "There are all the suburbs of Kansas City that are in Kansas and not Missouri." KC metro has a lot of cities and counties in both states.

KCMO (the city) is just a very large city in terms of size and population and probably more of the notable attractions/buildings of our area tend to be on the MO side and is what a lot of people tend to think about when they hear "Kansas City".

But yeah it's a complicated thing with metros that aren't just in 1 state lol.

Garlic Fest .I read about it in an atlas years ago and it's been on list since

Not really but when we moved out here (Omaha), I did actually have more than one person think we were going to live on a farm.

If you really need a place to stop, it’s fine. They have many of the national chain retailers/restaurants as well as regional chains like In-N-Out. There’s a large outlet mall. But other than it’s the center of garlic processing, although there is a lot of garlic coming from elsewhere to be processed.

It’s not what I’d call touristy. It’s about as interesting as Fresno. There are some pretty good produce stands just off 101 on the outskirts of town. I’ve been to Gilroy Gardens once for our company picnic. It was an independent park that was supposed to be a family’s gift to the community, but it didn’t do well until Paramount Parks started running it.

If you’re heading to Monterey, then Santa Cruz would be the usual pairing. Possibly a quick trip to Salinas with the Steinbeck Center and Steinbeck’s childhood home.

I had a summer job where one of out regional contacts was in Lenexa. We always referred to it as “our KC office”. I met a college athlete who was from the Kansas side, and his team was going the the national championships that year in KC. His family was going to help, and he was talking about which barbecue joint was going to cater for the team.

We are a small town in Victoria, Australia called Bittern. Many people around here don't know it so we usually just say Hastings which is our next (big) small town. Funny thing. We were standing in a very long line for test track. We were chatting to a family standing in front of us. They had just had friends visiting them a few months before. She couldn't remember the name of the town they came from so pulled out her address book from her bag. Sure enough, they were from Bittern.

If a stranger or casual acquaintance ask, I'll say "a South Jersey suburb of Philadelphia." If they ask for further details, or if it's someone I know is from the area, I'll give the town. West Deptford.

Yes, sure. The place I call my "hometown" is fairly small, so I just tell people it's really close to where George Washington crossed the Delaware River. Or if they are still confused, I just say "Outside of Philadelphia".

The town DW and I lived in for many years before moving here to Atlanta was also quite small. We just tell people that it was near Allentown. If the person is over the age of 40, they'll say "Do you mean the one in the Billy Joel song?". Yes...that Allentown. If they're under 40, we just say "A far suburb of Philadelphia".

Oh cool. I live in the city off Willow between Beattie Ave and Davison road

:thumbsup2 Hey neighbors!! One day we'll have to have a Lockport/Royalton DIS meet!

Ya my dad grew up in Buffalo so I am a huge Buffalo Bills fan. I always knew that Buffalo and NYC were along ways apart but never exactly how far until I asked.

Go Bills!! Someday we'll win the big one!:thumbsup2

Sacramento native here. 61 years. I have more than one East Coaster think it's a 30 minute drive to Disneyland from here.
Where I get funny looks is when I tell folks where my parents were born
My dad was born in Shanghai, China, a German citizen.
My mom was born on a farm in the middle of nowhere Saskatchewan, Canada. Her birth certificate says she was born "On SW1/4 Sec.24. Tp33, Rge 20 W3". The closest town was Druid, which really isn't a town many folks have heard of. And at the time my mom was born it was a "Village". In 1953 it incorporated as a "Hamlet". Population 324 today.

My brother (American) had a job in Shanghai for about a year many years ago. I went to visit him and when I was researching "things to do" was really surprised to learn about a history I never knew happened.

Bring your appetite. It’s always the last full weekend of July.

[agree with what BCLA said, other than the festival and shopping there isn’t much to do there. Moved away for grad school and haven’t really returned. Too expensive to live and not the sand community once everyone moved there as a cheaper alternative to SJ. But us relatively close to Santa Cruz and Monterey which I miss]
