River Cruise Early Booking Discount

I wasn't going to do a deposit, but then read the excursions and did the deposit right away! My son and I are booked on the October 1st trip. I am very excited -- I really like all the bike riding / hiking options. And of course the Valrhona chocolate! I'm not 100% sure it will happen until we know where dd is going to college (which is about a year away), but it will hopefully work out!

All the biking is was really got my Mom excited! I like a lot of activities, so it is perfect for me too. Hope it works out for you and your son.

Don't feel like you have to do their "official" biking tours. If you want to take a bike and just explore on your own they are more than happy to let you do that.

Hi All-

We are looking at booking our first river cruise for the special Oktoberfest Danube cruise and I wanted to ask if you could tell me a little about the cruise itself and how do people dress for dinners? Are there usually food options like with other cruises? I was hoping someone would have done a river cruise trip report. Thank you!

People have done river cruise trip reports. If you search for "River" in the Trip Report sticky at the top of this Forum, you'll find at least 5 River Cruise Trip reports, including mine.

Here's the link for that:

As far as the dress for dinner is concerned, I didn't do the Octoberfest cruise, but I did do the Danube cruise, and dinner was pretty much casual. No bathing suits or anything, but shorts, T-shirts, cruise casual were all acceptable. There were a couple of days we didn't even have time to change after the excursions, and folks went straight to the dining room. No problem. The only night that wasn't casual was the one night you get to eat at the Chef's Table restaurant. That's a really nice tasting menu, and most people dressed up at least a bit for that night.

There were food options at every meal. The restaurants on the AMAWaterways cruise ships are really well run, and the food is very good.

Sayhello

I have some notes about a Rhine River cruise and dining at the Chef's Table. My Rhine River notes includes menus for one of the dinners:

It's not the same as the Danube cruise but they use the same class of ships and it might give you some idea of the activities ABD schedules on these cruises.

We dressed fairly casually for dinner, except for the Chef's Table where we dressed up a bit (dress shirts but not suits)

The menu changes nightly and sometimes reflects the region you're in. However, they have several "core' options like chicken and veggies if the choices don't float your boat. Pun intended.
