Ulu cafe--Cats??

We were at Aulani in June. Tons of birds at Ulu (why are they all missing legs?!) and no cats but we saw a TON of mongooses. They would shoot out from the brush and cut you off as you were on the walkways scaring me EVERY time.

The birds are missing legs due to nesting material getting wrapped around their feet causing infection and eventual amputation. We were wondering too.

Shocked about both the cats and the mongooses. Didn't see a thing in January so possibly wrong month.
I actually had to look up what a mongoose even looks like. I adore cats so next time at Aulani, I'll be sure to hang around Ulu.

Thats so sad! I actually enjoyed their company. We got a kick out of how ballsy they were with stealing peoples food. We liked watching them every morning.

Would the plural of mongoose be mongeese? My spell check doesn't thing so but...

We definitely saw mongoose in September and the only time we saw any cats was later at night while lazing on our lanai when the pool area was all shut down below us. My husband is quite allergic to cats and he had no issues.

The mongoose are naturally-occurring, I believe. Because people feed the birds (despite the signs), the birds are terrible thieves. I was talking about them to a CM, who said that the only natural predator they had there was the mongoose, which at that point I had never seen. Then my daughter saw one over in the sunset point area away from the cove, darting in the greenery between the grass and rocks. And then I saw one hiding out in front of the Wainae tower area between the walking path and the ground floor patios. Another woman and I frantically tried to get our phones out to snap a pic, but it was gone by then. Clearly not a nuisance animal, though, b/c he had no interest in sticking around when humans were close.

Mongoose (red-footed variety I believe), were imported for the supposed purpose of keeping the rat population out of the sugar plantations. Well, as usual when we mess with creation's natural balance, the mongoose much preferred to eat the eggs of birds. So much so they helped to entirely decimate a number of bird species known only to the islands of Hawaii. They readily multiplied in Hawaii's beautiful environments. As several PP's have said, they are often seen, but very human-shy as a rule. :-)

Was at Aulani 2 weeks ago and saw one cat while floating on the lazy river.

:cutie: When I first read this line, I thought you meant a cat was floating IN (or on) the lazy river!!! :scared: :joker: :joker: :joker:

I am currently staying at Aulani. I’ve seen 2 skinny feral cats on the property — a black one with a stubby tail and patches of fur missing 2 days ago, and a calico today that looked to be about 6-8 months old. As an animal lover, it bothers me that Disney doesn’t seem to have taken measures to care for them and control the population, especially since they have animal behaviorists on staff. :-/

As a fellow animal lover, I surely understand your feelings. But feral cats are mighty skittish, and those 2 might usually hang out somewhere else in the area. Other than trapping, it would be difficult to catch a feral cat for care.

We saw lots of cats at Ulu cafe. We just got back last week. My kids are obsessed with cats so maybe that was why we noticed them. One was sunning herself on a chair across from the restrooms for an hour one day. We also saw lots of baby mongoose which I didn’t love but again, my kids did. I think the cats are still there but they are probably good at hiding from people. I was surprised there were so many hanging around.

Seen cats every day here. One looks pregnant. We haven’t petted them though. We don’t want to accidentally bring something home to our kitty, like mange or ringworm.

every day on the AMA AMA patio we had the Calico cat come out and greet us. And the Mongoose was always running around. Really no impact to our stay. Though people were trying to feed both.

A few weeks ago we saw a Calico cat several times around the Ulu Cafe. Also saw a mongoose while eating at Ama Ama.

As cat lovers, we always looks for a vacation cat - not usually to pet, just to observe them. Our DD will be pleased if she spots one or two hanging around.

I saw a cat at the cafe on Thursday and a mongoose on Friday. Today We are basically a prisoner of the hotel as all exits of the hotel are manned to keep us from going anywhere outside on Aulani grounds due to the wind
