The Running Thread - 2019

Personal Update:

Our dog, Dixie, is taking a turn for the worse and this morning was a hard one. Poor thing has almost zero control of her bladder and she's having a hard time walking in the mornings. Today she was very afraid of something and was just barking at nothing while having her tail tucked between her legs. We haven't made any final decisions yet, but I fear she wont make it much longer. I am struggling with my want to keep her and not be selfish, but I hate to see her suffer, which is believe she is at this point.

The struggle between heart and mind is real, and hard. Dixie will tell you, but you need to help her to know she can pass over to angel guard dog status with your love. Being with Iso that last 36 hours in December was hard, but he told me when it was time. Lots of hugs to your family.

Hello Run-DISers!

I'm back! I wasn't gone. I just wasn't running. Well... I was gone. I went to Australia for 2 weeks, but that was recent and doesn't explain my extended absence. Me not running is what explains my extended absence.

ANYWAY

I have a race on the books for 2019!!

JUNE
23 - xjillianpaige - BAA 10k (1:10:00 / N/A)

My first 10k on 10/21/17 was a 1:11:37 and my friend who registered me (stupid 10:00 meeting) put that we could finish it in 1:05:00 so I'm going to aim for 1:10:00 and see where my training takes me. I think I'd like to get to a 1:05:00 by February of 2020, and then my reach reach goal is an eventual hour even.

ETA: forgot to tag @LSUlakes re: 2019 race.

@LSUlakes I have a suggestion for a QOTD! Or people can just answer as I need help NOW! What do y'all use to help with allergies this time of year?

I take Zyrtec every day, today took a Zyrtec, Claritin and used Flonase and my eyes are so weepy that tears are running down my face! I wear glasses when I run so not sure what else I can do??

I use Zyrtec every day, year-round, due to an autoimmune disorder. When the pollen is bad, I add Flonase every day. But right now, it's still bad - nearly scratched my eyes out last night, they were so itchy. I just muddle through and limit my time outdoors: no windows open in my house or car, and I may run on the treadmill tonight.

Spring allergy season is definitely off to strong start! Ugh. I take Zyrtec daily, year round. When allergy season starts, I will often take a benadryl at night. I can't take Flonase as it gives me heart palpitations so I'm going to try a different nasal spray and see how that goes. But basically I just suffer through it and hope for good days. Avoid being outside (if possible) when its windy. Try the benadryl at night. I really think it helps on the bad days.

I signed up for a Fall Half! 10/6/19 - Urban Cow Half - thinking a goal of 2:35 which would be a new PR.

Similar to @PrincessV - I take claritin D on a daily basis because I'm allergic to my cats (did not know that until after I adopted them). In the Spring, when seasonal allergies come into play, I start taking flonase too. I also try to change clothes as soon as I come in from outside and shower and wash my hair to remove any lingering pollen.

The better late than never QOTD: With some interesting weather unfolding this week and into the weekend and the suggestion from someone in this group, what is the craziest weather you have ever run in?

ATTQOTD: I for one love extreme weather. I usually draw the line with lightning though. The worse run I went out for was 38, windy and raining. It's the coldest I've ever been on a run, and I ran it much faster than I had planned that day. Running in the snow was a highlight for me!

I don’t run outside of the weather is crazy. Some light rain or snow is the worst I’ve run in. That or under 25 degrees.

I had to go to an allergist and get prescribed Singulair because those were not cutting it anymore. I take one every morning and (knock on wood) haven't had any issues since starting it.

Maybe that is what I need to do. Nothing is working anymore. I forgot to mention I also take a Benadryl at night! I listed all the meds to DH and told him to remember them in case I OD and he needs to tell someone, lol!

So do you have to be referred from your dr. to go to an allergist? Could a regular dr. prescribe it?

LOL! I do still use Flonase as well because he told me to continue that.

I didn't have to have a referral, but I think that is dependent on your insurance. I would think a regular doctor could prescribe it, but I wanted one of those allergy tests to determine exactly what I am allergic to so I went to him. That test was torture, but at least now I know I should hate ragweed. LOL.

5 °F and windy. All of my cheeks were chapped after that.
42 °F and a downpour so bad I could not see in front of me.
While neither of these is totally wacky, both were because I checked the weather more than 24 hours before and did not realize it had changed..

Yes, a regular physician can prescribe it. I will also give a shout out to nasal saline spray as I also have problems with flonase.

ATTQOTD: Pop up Thunderstorm with heavy soaking rain, hail, and winds at a 5k a few years ago. Could see the storm coming but couldn't outrun it. Finish line was sunny and dry.

Hey @LSUlakes....if you are swamped with work and family obligations, do you want to assign a few people to take turns running the QOTD for a few weeks? Maybe one person does it for a week, then someone else takes a turn. With all that you've done for us, I'm sure it won't be hard to get 4-5 volunteers.
