The Running Thread - 2019

ATTQOTD-my wife was the designated runner in the family. A few years later my daughter started running as part of her conditioning for lacrosse. They both ganged up on me and FORCED me to run too. We have all done runs together (including our son) but most of the time I am the only one that keeps at it after all these years.

@KSellers88 and @LdyStormy76......hope you have a blast on your cruises. We prefer Royal Caribbean and try to do a cruise or two each year.

@Wendy98....best of luck with Boston. Sorry you are dealing with injuries and possibly bad weather.

ATTQOTD: My husband is a runner and I picked it up on a more regular basis while he was training for his first full. While I was training for mine this past fall, we did almost all of my long runs together. I took (too much) time off after so I’m trying to get my mileage back up so we can do some trails together; I actually really miss those trail runs with him.

I really want my sister to start running, but she has really bad asthma and is scared. She’s in great shape, but she rarely gets through a barre class without needing her inhaler. I understand and don’t want to pressure someone to run who’s scared of health issues.

My dad says his day to day activities are all a workout and he doesn’t need to add a formal workout to his day. In all honesty, he’s in the best shape out of all of us so maybe he’s on to something. His work is not physically laborious, he just can’t stay still. My mom runs in the pool but I will not be joining her for that.

ATTQOTD: I was the runner in the family besides distant cousins (whom I did not know ran) until I went to run Disney solo... My youngest DD decided to join and DH has been supportive and joined us for some training run and 5k. Looking forward to training DD to her first 10k at MW 2020!

ATTQOTD: I run solo. My husband just did his first ever race but we ran maybe 2 steps together before our paces were way different. I'm hoping he trains more so we can do the 10K at Wine and Dine together. One of my BFFs is a runner but she's way fast so we talk running but can't run together.

ATTQOTD: DH was somewhat of a runner before we met. Now he has back issues and asthma so he doesn't run with me. I can talk to him some about running. ODS is showing some interest in running now. After Sunday's race, I plan to back off on training (distance) for the summer and have him do some training runs with me. I don't have any big races planned for awhile and I'd really like to focus more on losing some weight and just get back to having fun when I run.

14 - @Smilelea - BHM 26.2 Half Marathon (3:10:00 / N/A)!

The last two weeks have been crazy on top of the fact that I've been sick. I have no idea how Sunday will go and I also hear rain is in the forecast. I'm going to leave my goal as is but I'm also going to run whatever I feel come Sunday and just plan on finishing. I don't need this for any POT so I'm just going to try to have fun.

QOTD: Do you have family members that run? Do you run with them or just have general running discussions with them?
ATTQOTD: As for my very immediate family, I am the runner. My wife and kids have run the Disney races with me and we all have had a great time. They have each run other races for Disney P.O.T. and done some running on their own but none of them are as dedicated as I am.

My extended family is a different story. They were the runners and I was always the “team sport” athlete. My father and siblings were all bigger runners than me and started much earlier in life and have continued as runners throughout their lives. However, besides cross country races in high school, none of them have ever run a race. My Dad turns 80 this year. He has been running 3 miles every other day for the last 45 years and he is still going. But never once, ever has he had a desire to run a race. Not even a 5K. Nor extend beyond his 3 miles every other day. My siblings are in the same boat - running their whole lives but never racing.

Hope everyone is doing well. Got busy and I turn around and it has been more than a month since I posted! Too much to catch up on, must have been a lot of great conversations, so I will just jump back in.

ATTQOTD: My younger daughter is a runner and in the past has run races with me. Now it will be me running races with her. During my injury and recovery she has gotten a lot faster! I am trying to get her down to WDW for Marathon Weekend but not sure yet. Running with her is something I treasure.

ATTQOTD: I married into a running family and initially started running so I didn't feel left out. So far, three people in the family have BQ, with one running Monday. DH and I both run although not together since he is much faster than I am. We are running the same 5K in June. My MIL really wants us to do a family race as she calls it. However, there is not a lot of enthusiasm for this right now. Maybe for 5K in the future.

Oops! Forgot to include my answer.

ATTQOTD: I would watch "Mary Poppins" first. I loooved it as a kid and haven't watched it for several years, so that would be the first. I would also like to watch "Song of the South" someday, but I don't think they'll release that one...

ATTQOTD: That's kind of a tough one as we own a lot of the Disney movies, so the ones I really love I can watch nearly any time now. But, I think I'd say Tarzan. We had it on VHS, but never bought it on DVD/Bluray. It was my son's obsession when he was 2 years old. I must have watched that movie a thousand times. I love the soundtrack and I can't hear a song from it or see a scene from the movie without remembering my sweet boy as a baby.

Great question @run.minnie.miles !!

ATTQOTD-I would start with the Pixar movies and watch all the shorts first. They are so amazing. Pixar marathon after that , hard to choose the best one.

Then probably Lady and the Tramp because it's my wife's favorite Disney movie.

Wait, I'm not sticking to the rules here am I?

This is my mom's favorite too, so I also love it! When we were in Savannah for her birthday in September, they were filming a live-action Lady and the Tramp, which I guess will be on Disney +.

No runners in my immediate family - just the opposite. A whole host of knee problems. Both my parents have had both of their knees replaced. My siblings don't run and I don't have children.

My cousin runs and we talk about it from time to time, but we have never run together, but do plan on doing a couple of the same races this summer.

ATTQOTD:
We have access to lots of DVDs as the public library is pretty awesome so I would probably go with some of the older non-animated movies. I loved That Darn Cat and think my kids would as well. In that vein I think I would want to spool up the Herbie the Love Bug movies. The Cat from Outerspace, and The Shaggy DA. I am not sure what would win in a family vote
For myself I would probably pick Song of the South as I had the record but never saw it, and Newsies, which I LOVED but my husband would not watch with me.

I would also be excited to eventually have my kids read some of the books I loved that Disney turned into movies: The Journey of Natty Gan, White Fang, Bridge to Terebethia, Escape to Witch Mountain, Swiss Family Robinson, BFG (which we had to stop reading because reading about a giant peering into the windows of sleeping children before bedtime is a poor choice), and more recently A Wrinkle in Time.
